Cardiff's McPhail Linked Again
Cardiff's McPhail Linked Again
Monday, 30th Aug 2010 15:48

Town have again been linked with Cardiff City midfielder Stephen McPhail. The former Leeds man was previously mentioned in connection with the Blues early this month when reports in Wales claimed the 30-year-old was the subject of conversations between Roy Keane and Dave Jones.

McPhail, who was born in London but raised in Dublin, played alongside Keane for the Republic of Ireland.

After playing youth football with the Home Farm club from where Darren O’Dea, Shane Supple, Alan Lee and Owen Garvan also emerged and where Garvan’s father is a coach, McPhail joined Leeds United. The 5ft 8in tall midfielder has also appeared for Millwall (loan), Nottingham Forest (loan) and Barnsley.

Another midfielder is on Town’s list of potential loan signings, although Keane said on Saturday that he still didn’t expect any more additions before Tuesday’s deadling. ‘Emergency’ loan signings can be made from the following week.

Meanwhile, Town striker Jason Scotland has revealed he mis-hit his league debut goal for the Blues: “If I had struck the shot properly the keeper would probably have saved it. I failed to get a clean connection and the ball evaded David James and went in off the far post.

“I’m not fully match-fit yet and this was my first 90 minutes of action at first team level for a long while.”

Trinidad and Tobago are without a game during the international break and the 31-year-old will work on his fitness during the fortnight without domestic fixtures.

Elsewhere, former Town striker Sam Morrow has joined Tranmere Rovers from Coleraine in his home country of Northern Ireland for a nominal fee.

Morrow, 25, made one first team sub appearance in the Carling Cup while at Portman Road having come through the academy.

Experienced cover definitely needed for the holding role. At present only alternative for the position is Leadbitter, who is not really suited to the role. Hyam is a natural in the holding position, agressive, simple passing. McPhail offers a different type of option, very good touch, ability to make room for himself and pick a forward pass. However would be relying on Norris and Leadbitter to help win the battles. Definitely wouldnt have the legs for a 442. If there is an agressive RB to come in, McPhail would provide balance to the team. With Peters remaining at RB, I would be concerned about the lack of physical presence with McPhail also in the side.

Important to get cover for Hyam (if only to rest the lad) - not sure Stephen McPhail would be that choice for me, but I'm more than willing to be proven wrong. Popular opinion seems to be a good move, so why not?

Ans: Cleggy can't get his thumb out of his Arsenal!
