Evans Bid Turned Down - Reports
Evans Bid Turned Down - Reports
Tuesday, 19th Jul 2011 08:43

Town have had a £1 million offer for striker Ched Evans rebuffed by Sheffield United, according to reports this morning. The Wales international has been linked with the Blues on a number of occasions since May, most recently on Saturday.

The Blades, who were relegated to League One in May, are desperate to remove Evans’s £15,000-a-week salary from their wage bill and look set to make a significant loss on the £3 million fee they paid Manchester City for the 22-year-old’s services in the summer of 2009. However, it appears the Blues will have to offer more cash if they are to sign the Wales international.

Evans, who has also recently been mentioned in connection with Middlesbrough, Leicester and Cardiff, is understood not to have travelled with the rest of the Blades squad to their pre-season camp in Malta.

Elsewhere, Cardiff boss Malky Mackay is reported to have reiterated his desire to keep midfielder Peter Whittingham, who was linked with the Blues by Welsh sources over the weekend in the wake of the Blues’ offer for a winger being turned down.

Meanwhile, there’s been no news on whether Town will further their interest in veteran former Middlesbrough, Aston Villa, Coventry and Hull holding midfielder George Boateng. The Dutchman recently spent time training with the Blues and was set for a similar spell with Nottingham Forest last week.

Forest man Guy Moussi, who plays a similar role to the 35-year-old, was also a player interesting the Blues but the 26-year-old Frenchman has agreed a new deal with Steve McClaren's club.

Town’s senior players are in action in their first UK-based pre-season friendly this evening when they take on Blue Square Bet Premier side Cambridge United at the Abbey Stadium (KO 7.45pm).

Those that aren’t involved tonight are likely to be in the squad which faces Bury Town at Ram Meadow on Wednesday (KO 7.45pm).

Of more concern than the continuing, somewhat boring, Evans/Sharp gossip is the lack of any announcement of the recruiting of a quality centre back who just might be fit and last longer than one season with us. If secretive negotiations are underway lets hope that we do not endure days of speculation and more"bids turned down" leaks, but simply hear that the signing has been made... if only!!

Hasn't it occured to some of you that poor old Phil may have been away on holiday (albeit a very short one).

Personally I wouldn't pay more than £1m for Evans..would rather us look elsewhere.

Good news.
Fingers crossed we do not go in with a better offer. Would prefer to keep scotland and/or Priskin than that muppet.

Agree with EssexTractor - we have striking options but what we really need is a quality CB (or possibly two). Plus a Right Back and at least one quality midfielder! I know there is 6 weeks to go in the window but I am getting worried now as we keep getting linked with strikers and wide players not where we have the biggest weaknesses - However, keeping the faith (just) that PJ and Evans are keeping their powder dry and there are some suprise signings in the offing.
P.S. Well done Phil - hopefully some of the moaners on here will have lost interest now after the news break and gone elsewhere...we can live in hope!

Thought he was really good while at narwich and he ripped us apart when the blades beat us 3-0 the year before. would be a good player

All Evans can do is strike dead balls from the edge of the box. He's not a worker, and is definitely not an Ipswich type player. Just ask the blades fan who added his bit earlier. We could and should do a lot better than him.

Why did I get out of the bed on the wrong side? Perhaps it's because even though we have the money we don't have the ambition and can't seal a deal.
I could be wrong but with a new team, no pace, no creativity and defence that will leak goals we are looking at a season like the previous 2 years.

shame we didn't go in for Jonathan Greening who has joined Forest from Fulham, he was a decent player at WBA

we have just paid good money for Chopra - IMO - a better player than Sharp, and of similar stature. We need someone to replace Priskin and to make Ellington fight for his wages, Evans 'could' be that man

Forget him.Concentrate on Sharp

I wonder if having Chopra and Ellington around will make Priskin get his finger out and put in a descent shift for a change ?

I'm wondering if we did'nt have the money from the sale of connor wether the blades would have snatched our arm of.One more offer of 1.1m then if they say no forget him.I did'nt see much of him last season so could'nt really comment but cant say i'd be to upset if we missed out on him.Did i read a comment, over the weekend that p.j was looking at john stead now that would be interesting if true.

Did you know that Ched Evans is Marcus Evans nephew but apparently Ched Evans dad wants Marcus to pay higher wages because 'he's family'.

Marcus Bent and Ched Evans, the Blades' forward line, endured a torrid evening, barely touching the ball and looking hopelessly isolated.

No surprise the offer was rejected. PJ was really asking for it after his 'the first offer is always low as we expect it to be rejected' comment.

Personally however I would give up on Ched - one of the main reasons Sheffield were relegated according to their fans. Lazy and doesn't score goals. Doesn't sound like the type of player we need - particularly as we already have Priskin! I have read a lot from fans that it 'doesn't matter if he scores goals or not' - really? Surely that's what a striker gets paid to do? If we really want a striker that doesn't score - then just look at Ellington and Priskin! Why sign another?

Hopefully just another in the long line of non signings, we need a creative midfielder and another centre back, especially with Ingarmarsson injured,
(he did'nt last long did he) Perhaps someone younger, fitter with some pace would help.

We need Quality more than Quantity. Chopras a good example. We have six strikers so lets be sure that anymore, Evans for example, is going to improve us and not just add to the numbers. We don't want dissent from players who can't get in the team.

john the bummer or whatever your log in name is as it is on the other page and cannot be bothered to look, was their a point to your comment?!? If they looked hopelessly isolated then this could be to do with them playing in a poor team with no confidence and service. I quite like this signing young, with time to improve. But agree with all the comments about central midfielder and defence which are key areas.

Good grief...some of the people on here don't half moan for no reason!
Im looking forward to the new season and am looking forward to seeing a brand new team. Who needs all this moaning and negativity when the season is still weeks away? It really doesnt help does it?

I think Ched may be a good buy...wait and see what happens. And for those saying we buy Sharp, as someone has already mentioned he had a bad time at Sheffield Utd too..so the difference is???

Please can there be a bit more positivity...wait until a few months of the season have gone then maybe make a judgement??
