Sonko Waiting for Town Offer
Sonko Waiting for Town Offer
Wednesday, 17th Aug 2011 22:44

Former Reading and Stoke central defender Ibrahima Sonko says Town have told him they intend to make him a contract offer. The free agent Senegalese international revealed that he could be on the way to the Blues via Twitter last week.

Updating the situation in a tweet , the 30-year-old says no deal is yet on the table but says the club have said one will be forthcoming: “Not yet. They said they’ll make an offer though, but we’ll just have to wait and see. Two games in three days, [it’s] hard to have time for talk.”

Born in Bignona, Senegal but having moved to France as a baby, Sonko began his career with Town’s old UEFA Cup foes St Etienne, moving on to Grenoble, where he made his first senior appearances, in 1999.

Three years later, he joined Brentford, the 6ft 3in tall defender spending two seasons at Griffin Park before joining Reading on a Bosman in 2004.

Capped four times by Senegal, scoring one goal, Sonko became a cult hero at the Madejski Stadium and acquired the nickname ‘Superman’ for his exceptional leaping ability as he helped Steve Coppell’s side into the Premier League.

Stoke paid an initial £2 million for his services in August 2008 but his time at the Britannia Stadium was less successful. Loans at Hull City and Portsmouth followed, before he was released at the end of last season.

Sonko rejoined Reading on trial this summer and played in a number of pre-season games but talks broke down, with his old club only willing to offer a deal which equated to a 90% pay cut with the player only willing to take a drop of 75%.

Asked about Sonko’s first Twitter comment that he “could meet with my friend Ívar [Ingimarsson] again soon” after Saturday’s defeat to Hull, Blues boss Paul Jewell played Town’s interest down: “He might be going to dinner with him!”

Like many have said he can't be any worse than we have also there seems to be a shortage of available defenders at the minute. Also I know its tantamount to swearing but BULLARD FOR CAPTAIN sometimes wage structures ect ect have to be broken he is proven at this level and at this club and players who complain he's getting more than them I have one word for them IMPROVE

Remember George Santos
Give the young players a chance. They sit on the bench, play in the reserves or get sent out on loan. Every time there is an opportunity to get in the team we buy get another second rate player.
Patience, organisation and a settled squad please

He's willing to take a 75% cut? Makes a refreshing change!!

It's win win, if he was on a lot of money, we get a bargain, and if he was cheap to start with, then it's a bonus, surely?!

Bullard is a talisman and Jewell seems to bring best out of him

On the defender slot What about Kyrgiakos at Liverpool big , experienced and gone down the pecking order !!!

I feel a bit sorry for Delaney & Smith, where the hell were the supporting midfield when we were ripped apart, where was the tracking back....the whole team needs a bloody good shake up. Paul Jewell is doing his best people give him some more time to bring in and blend...we'll get there...eventually!!

Obviously some clueless chickens here.
Sonko is quality, and we are short at the back.
The worst thing is that people want us to get RID of a player, when we are lacking defenders?
Ridiculous some people

Jewell and his team need time so please let's be patient, success doesn't come overnight! Sonko is worth a punt but would still like another, maybe someone on loan? Also I would like to see Aljaz Struna at right back, he looked decent on the YouTube video and I know it's only showing his good side and not the bad but I think he could be another gem like Cresswell!!!!!!!

Tony
Don't feel that getting rid of Delaney and Smith without replacements is a good idea. We simply don't have enough cover.
Guenthev
Don't know why Struna isn't here, should be by now.

You talk a lot of sense

If I was Paul Jewell (and didn't have much access to club funds) I would do things a little different. Its been mentioned that JET is an accomplished centre-back. Get him to play alongside Sonko and have Ingi (Sicknote), Smith and Delaney as back up. We have enough strikers to provide support for Chopra and it might give Priskin another opportunity in the first team (Priskin is still young and is a Hungarian International..). I am deeply concerned about another position on the pitch- goalkeeper. If Stockdale was called-back right now- we would be scre***. Get another keeper in and get that Slovenian/Slovakian right-back in asap.

Don't think he has done himself any favours by tweeting a possible move to Ipswich.
Football clubs in general like to be discreet when negotiations are taking place.

Personally i would prefer to wait a couple of weeks and then sign two Premiership Fringe Center Backs on loan.

What about Wayne Brown on a short term deal?
Then get a couple of Premiership loan players in

Guentchev :- Didn't Paul Jewell say that the club ' Were just looking at him ' when he came to PR ?

fact,3 games is not a season in the championship, fact, nobitch started no better than we have this season, fact, this time last year we all thought keane might not be such a bad manager as we thought.there will be chances to redeem ourselves in time.the good thing is so far what i've seen this season we actually look a threat in front of goal and i think we will get the goals flowing again at home.our glaring defensive weaknesses will get better one way or the other so i'm not really concerned at this time.what will make it worse is drastic action i.e.dropping players does'nt help their confidence.as we all know from the keane era.as the manager said this is a work in progress.lets at least give em a period of games before we start to judge.

Agree that it's too early to judge what the season holds for us overall but having lost three games at home on the spin against teams which we had high hopes of beating does not bode well. Fortress Portman Road it isn't and the Peterborough game now becomes a crucial one as we will need to show that the away performance against Bristol City was the standard and not a flash in the pan.

He can't be any worse than Smith - Delaney is missing MaCualey.
And when are we going to get a proper RB ?

SPEND SOME EFFING MONEY!!

Premiertown added 08:24 - Aug 18
Those who say early days forget the pre season. We were taken apart by non league cambridge especially through the middle and down the flanks as well. The longer we go getting thrashed every game the worse the confidence of the better players will get and then it will be last two seasons repeated.
Bring back Joe royle!
