Sheepshanks Accepts Honorary Role
Sheepshanks Accepts Honorary Role
Friday, 19th Aug 2011 08:59

Ex-Town chairman David Sheepshanks has been made an honorary vice-president of Town at the invitation of chief executive Simon Clegg. Sheepshanks stepped down from the club's board after 24 years in the summer.

Clegg said: "I think it's fitting that David's outstanding commitment to this club over many years should be recognised in this way.

"As supporters of the club will know, David was a member of the board from 1987 and became chairman in 1995, a position he held for many years.

"He also led the search to find an owner for the football club and played a leading role in securing Marcus Evans's investment into Ipswich Town.

"I'm delighted that he has agreed to accept the invitation to become an honorary vice-president at Ipswich Town and look forward to his continued support of the club."

Sheepshanks was chairman of the Blues from 1995 until 2009 and a board member from 1987 until earlier this year, but still remains the chair of the PLC which owns 12.5% of the club and the ITFC Charitable Trust. He also the chairman of St George’s Park, the FA’s National Football Centre project at Burton.

@all those complaining and about Sheepy your all fecking morons and tractorboybig know what your talking about before you say stupid things.....he did not kill Ipswich Town if fact he probably saved us....yes he made mistakes, doesn't everyone? He could have jumped ship like a lot of other Chairmen did but he stayed he found Marcus. I think the role is great for Sheepy and he deserves it well done.....

Oh if you wondering what hurt us it was the Premiership pure and simple...the same as it has hurt numerous clubs....it has killed ofF competition with just a hand full of clubs winning all the trophies and it is designed to keep it that way....we are fighting out for a premiership place to just make up the numbers like every other team in the premier bar maybe 5..........

Don`t you just love the anti sheepy brigade, not a clue what really went on,never going to achieve anything in their own sorry little lives and so so clever with hindsight.

ME should sack smeghead and put Sheepy in charge.
ITFC just might start getting somewhere then cos at the moment it`s going nowhere fast I`m afraid.

Mine is an opnion. Provided you are not abusive I respect you for yours.
Yes he did well to steer us after we hit administration, but his job was to make sure we did nto go into administration if we got relegated.
Circumstances were against him because the resale value of our players collapsed and Sheepy did not include clauses that allowed us to terminate their massive salaries in the event of relegation. He wasn't the only one and it is a fair point to make that the criticism is one made in hindsight, but it was his job to prepare for the worst.
Ozzydog: Thank you for pointing out how people who think badly of Sheepshanks will never achieve anything with our lives. Because we form our opinions in reterospect .... that told us. You must have employed a really good private investigator to discover that our lives are shams. Perhaps a little reterospective viewing of your own previous comments Ozzydog may make you make more of your own life.

Not every club that has been relegated from the premiership has gone into administration.

On a personal basis, I can't praise him high enough.

On my 21st birthday instead of being out on the juice I had to be in Suffolk as very much loved one of mine past away. Couldn't really decide what to do so I went for a drive in the evening and some how found myself a PR late on.

The gates were open so I went in the ground for a look at the pitch and then I heard 'Can I help you', it was Sheepshanks returning from a long day of meetings in London. I'm sure he wanted just to go home to his family but instead after explaining to him what had happened (and praying that he wasn't going to do me for trespassing!) he gave me a tour of PR! The changing rooms, his office, board room etc. He showed me the ITFC mission statement the works. Complete gent.

On a club level, yeah he messed up when we were relegated definitely i don't think even the bluest of tinted glasses can deny that. However, I feel we may not of achieved what we did without him as well. He wouldn't be the first chairman for that to happen, doesn't make it right agreed, but he unlike others stayed on a sinking ship and got ME involved.

Just my opinion.

After being chased out of ITFC by ME,I wonder if he has been brought back as a ready made scapegoat. ( Unbeknown to him at this point)

One of the many current problems of this Club, is the fact that it has lost, through various means and reasons, MANY 'true blue' people over recent times.
These people range through all levels, and roles, within the Club, with David Sheepshanks being one such person.
Would certainly not be derogatory to see a few more such people return - the 'pedigree' has somewhat been sadly lost .......... for the time being anyway.
