Jewell Hugely Disappointed
Jewell Hugely Disappointed
Monday, 2nd Jan 2012 18:23

Town boss Paul Jewell was hugely disappointed by the Blues' 3-1 home defeat to Nottingham Forest, the Liverpudlian again left ruing individual defensive errors after Forest - who were without a goal in their last seven matches - netted three times for only the second time this season, the previous occasion having been when they last scored in the game against Town at the City Ground in November.

Jewell said: “It was hugely disappointing. Some of the defending which went on today was calamitous really and it’s not the first time this season.

“We created a few opportunities in the first half but we were always susceptible. Every time a ball went in the box or there was a long ball, there was blind panic.”

The Town boss says centre-half Ibrahima Sonko was a big loss: “I think we missed Sonko, I think he’s been a bit plus for us and he was missed today being suspended.

“There were straight long balls that we missed and all of a sudden they were at us and we were under pressure. They were meat and drink to most centre-halves but today for some reason we were all over the place.

“I take responsibility because I’m the manager, so it rests at my door,” he added. “But some of the individual basic errors from experienced players I’m struggling to explain.”

While conceding twice at one end, Jewell felt his side ought to have scored themselves at the other: “Daryl’s had two really good opportunities at the back post, JET’s had a header and he’s hit the underside of the bar.

“We’ve probably created more opportunities than them in the first half but we found ourselves two goals down.

“From their perspective, they’re great finishes, but the second goal should never have come to that. We were under pressure and gave the ball away. The lad did a little bit of skill and stuck it in the back of the net. We shoot ourselves in the foot.”

The Blues manager explained his change of formation, revealed that the missing Jimmy Bullard had phoned in sick: “Jimmy was ill, he rang me this morning about 10 o’clock and said he’s been up all night and there’s obviously been a bit of flu going around.

“Chopra’s been a bit low on confidence. I thought they might play with five in midfield and I just thought it would give Andy Drury a go. He did excellently, I thought he was a bright spark today. We’ve created more opportunities today at home than we have for a while.”

Jewell defended himself against accusations that playing only Jay Emmanuel-Thomas up front was an overly cautious approach: “Daryl Murphy’s an attacking player, Lee Martin’s a winger and Andy Drury’s an attacking midfielder. I don’t think it was a defensive system.

“Against Derby we played 4-4-2 and we created fewer chances then. You can talk about systems all day, it’s about players. We created more opportunities today than we did against Derby.

“You always have to nullify the opposition but for me it wasn’t a defensive formation at all. You can talk about formations all you like, Barcelona don’t play with a striker and you wouldn’t say they’re defensive.

“And if you give goals away like we did today, it doesn’t matter how many forwards you play."

Jewell admitted that it was another poor result and says his side need to improve, particularly at the back: “We’re hugely disappointed and some of the defending was embarrassing but it’s not as if we’re the champions of Europe and Notts Forest are mugs, it’s two teams who both think they should be in the top echelons of the league.

“But I didn’t expect us to be as bad as that defensively, we were very, very shaky. OK, we’ve lost Sonko, but we’ve got to be doing better than that.”

Skipper Grant Leadbitter added: "We can't give goals away in the manner that we have done today.

"We're doing it far too often and you just can't do it at this level or you are going to get punished.

"When you give goals away early in the game you make things hard for yourself, but that is football and we need to look ahead to the next game."

Forest manager Steve Cotterill was delighted with the win, which he says has been on the cards: “If you look at the performances, that result has been coming, unfortunately it’s been taking too long to come.

“I thought the goals we scored today were outstanding, three fantastic goals and we’ve done it with nine players who would predominantly be in your 16, of which seven would be in your starting line-up, not here through injury.”

lincolnshire... you make some good points and i agree with most of what you say in your last post, but jewell is not blameless. i have been going since 1968 myself.. the northstand with my little homemade wooden stand so i could see, oh happy days.. but we cant live on memories... the dilema is this, does evans back the man he appointed 100% or does he relieve him of his duties... i Know one thing , ipswich never got to where they got , without backing the manager, and it is no coincidence that since receivership we have not had any long term continuity. Marcus has a tough call, but he hasnt bought the club for it to fail, so i am hoping that common sense prevails here and evans gets it right.. coyb

Firstly, I feel some sympathy for magilton, as at the moment he's being put in the same bracket as keane and Jewell, who are both inept to say the least. As I recall in magiltons first season our home record was incredible, w15 d7 l1(Watford). We tore teams apart, Bristol city 6-0 being the best. So, let's not be to harsh on somebody who was a brilliant player and servant to our club, especially as he was a rookie manager.

Secondly, I'm at a loss as to where our once feared and respected football club goes from here. If we stick with Jewell we are likely to go down on current form, if we gamble and get someone else in, it doesn't always work, look at Preston last year, the scummers the year before with gunn. People keep craving for young managers to be considered, but who? And would they really come here as if we sack Jewell it'll look like you only get 1 or 2 seasons get it right. I do think Today's result will be jewels last in charge, and I really hope the next manager is a very carefully selected one.

Hmmmm, no positives from me and this is now getting very concerning.
I don't think ME will get rid for a while yet so I just hope that PJ gets some quality defenders in, as this is easily the main problem. Sort the defence and there is hope. Otherwise its farewell.

tactical tosh, the only thing Jewell got right was the inclusion of Drury and that was a forced change. Says it all.

Goodbye Jewell, Evans does the right thing, lets the manager have creative control, shame he's chose us two idiots.

When Jewell came in he said that one of the attractions of the job was that ME had promised him time to build a team. Given that assurance how an earth can he justify filling his team with over 30s, has beens and loanees? How is that building a team? Our club has always prided itself on its youth policy. By having a reputation for giving the youngsters their chance we have been able to attract a high calibre into our academy. Jewell and Evans are destroying that. I for one would rather see the club back in the hands of Ipswich people, even if it means being run on a shoestring, than in the hands of a faceless speculator like Evans. To those who say that you have to have money to succeed these days I have only two things to say - Norwich City and Swansea City. Jewell out, Evans out, mercenary players out. Ipswich Town for Ipswich people!

h32 - agreed. i like the calls for Curbishley and Holland. However, simply can't see PJ going anywhere - which leads to concerns about Clegg and ME. they are also clueless! I appreciate you know this already - but I can't see how we get ourselves out of this! Clegg honestly believes we are making progress!!! One point down on the same time last season - worst run of results since 1994 and many thrashings! Clegg thinks this is good and judging from comments on here even some fans are content and in that lies the problem!!!!!

2 taxi's needed. 1 to take Jewell and Clegg out of Portman road the other to go to Brighton to get Poyet and Taricco and bring them here.

On the evidence of the last year- results, improvement in performance, improvement in individual players performance, signings, development of the shape of the team, support from the fans, orgainisation etc- Jewell should go - I just do not think that this man will be able to turn the ship around. Past statements by him (Ipswich is a long way from anywhere etc) suggest to me that his heart is not in the job.
I have no suggestions who should come in- I think it is a great opportunity for an ambituous manager- we are 2 centre backs away from having a team that can easily cope in mid table and a centre mid, some organisation, desire and confidence away from a play off push.
Do not think Burley is the answer - I know that jewell isn't

@steve1978. Agree totally with your comments about Jim. And what did those in charge do to him - other than take his job away, they also failed to honour his contract which, as I understand it, was settled at the 'death' and for more money than Jim was orginally prepared to accept. And this happens because SC didn't understand the very point you are making.

I think if JP goes, then this time SC should also go as well.

@FordhamBlue - It has rearly been value for money since it went from standing to all seated and especially the last few years. We are all frustrated and we all look forward to hopefully the day comes when the good times come back and hopefully they will. There is venting frustration and then you get some of the morons that just have to have a go for the hell of it. Boo'ing the team at home games just help push morale down for the players. This make life harder for the manager lift them.

I care for the club and I am far from happy with the way things are and I don't find the need to make comments like some of the one's that are seen on this site.

I will continue to purchase my season ticket what ever league we are in and continue to make the 240 mile round trip hopefully to each and every home game for as long as I can. If we did go down, I can't see a lot of so called supporters doing the same.

WE all want what's best for the club and hopefully we will get it.

jas0999 - it takes all sorts, as the saying goes - and we've certainly got them.
Heard Clegg speaking on Radio Suffolk on Saturday - couldn't believe what I was hearing, but I suppose I should have expected it. Clueless, and some.

Agree with your post.

@lincolnshireblue. I'm fully with you on some of the comments made on here - slightly ironic that ultimately we all want the same thing - success for our club. Just to clarify though - I wasn't in any way suggesting that your support wasn't loyal.

Colin Viljoen - now there was somebody who could pass a ball! And at least you have a home game on Saturday!

Up till today I have very much been on Paul Jewells side and have been willing to give him time but my patience has now gone and PJ needs to go otherwise I fear the worst (League 1).

There are plenty of options out there for a possible replacement. I like the calls for Matty Holland, he knows what we have, what positions need strengthening so he could come in and address any squad issues straight away, the only problem I can see with MH is that he has no experience, does he even have his badges???

For me Graham Westley from Stevenage would be my ideal choice, he is young (43), successful and has done wonders with Stevnage getting back to back promotions, he knows the lower leagues and I believe he is an achievable target!

Like everyone else though I will be refreshing my computer screen at work tomorrow hoping for some news that Jewell has gone. Jewell out!!!

I felt very sorry for Ellington today. You could see he was putting himself in some great positions but had no one behind with enough footballing sense to slide him through. I also thought he worked hard.

As for the problems, petrified slow defence and lack of movement around the pitch! And what's with all the long balls from the very start?

FornhamBlue added 21:18 - Jan 2
@dissboyitfc. I'll second that!
