Jewell: Captaincy Change No Slight on Grant
Jewell: Captaincy Change No Slight on Grant
Tuesday, 6th Mar 2012 12:18

Town boss Paul Jewell says Grant Leadbitter shouldn’t feel slighted by Carlos Edwards keeping the captaincy despite the midfielder’s return to the side. Edwards took over as skipper while his former Sunderland colleague was out of the team and kept the armband for Saturday’s 3-0 victory over Bristol City.

Jewell said: “I think sometimes we think too much about the captaincy in football. In cricket and rugby and other sports they have more input. I just said to Grant to go and play, don’t worry about trying to be captain.

“I think Carlos is the type of guy who is so laid back that [he’s unaffected by being captain], although I’m sure he’s honoured by it, and I want him to be honoured.

“I don’t think it affects Grant that much but I just wanted to make sure that all he had to worry about was playing football, if there was anything on his mind.

“It’s not a kick in the teeth, it’s just that Carlos has done the job fine and it’s no big deal to me, I’ve got to be honest.

“In Italy, the guy who has got the most caps gets the armband, a lot of the time goalkeepers get it. I just don’t think it’s that big a deal.”

Nope don't like Leadbitter as a player full stop...not as a captain, not a good passer, doesn't put himself about in tackling and whatever happened to his deadball skills he had at Sunderland, briefly saw something the first season he was here but that too has vanished. Still got plenty to prove if he wants to stay here next season.

I guess Jewell is one of 'a very few' Managers in the game who plays down the IMPORTANT role of Team Captain. Just another one of his weird decisions / ideas. to add to the many, and all too often.

Thanks for clearing that up Michael11..knew it was there or there abouts.

Don't think we've got proper "captain" material at the club at the moment..maybe Bowyer if he was 100% fit and playing week in - week out..think it's something we need to bring in during the summer - preferably at centre - back.

Anyway,we should have 11 captains out there,not just 1.

Well said lightningboy, we should have 11 captains and I think that's Jewell's view too hence his consideration of the captains role not being that important.

The one thing I disagree with Jewell on is the importance of the captaincy. Its the Captains job to keep their teams mates heads up on the field he is expected to keep talking, keep the team going. Some players can't handle the job and it effects the way they play, others are just too quiet on the field to make an effective Captain i.e. Ledbetter and others take to it, it improves their own game as they know they must lead by example. I think Carlos is the perfect Captain for us and I also think since he has become Captain his own game has improved dramatically.

buryblue77 - NONSENSE - have you ever played in a team without a designated captain / leader ?

Very much doubt it - otherwise you would not think the way you do.

Dont agree with PJ here captain is importan,t think he is trying to build Leadboots confidence up as he knows he has been rubbish and has been since his first season with us. Think we are better with him not in the team and he wont be here next year anyway
