Jewell: Ellington and Peters Can Move On
Jewell: Ellington and Peters Can Move On
Tuesday, 1st May 2012 06:00

Blues boss Paul Jewell says it might be best if striker Nathan Ellington and midfielder or full-back Jaime Peters move on during the close season. The duo have a year remaining on their current deals but played little part during 2011/12.

Ellington, who last week said that he might favour a move to play more regular football, made only three starts — just one in the league — and 14 sub appearances without scoring after signing on a free transfer from Watford last summer.

Jewell admits that the 30-year-old, who was a key member of his promotion-winning Wigan side, has failed to make much of an impression at Portman Road: “He’s been disappointing Duke, there’s no two ways about it.

“I see him every day in training and I saw a piece where he said he hadn’t had a chance, but what he does in training, or what he doesn’t do, or what other people do in training can highly influence my decision on a Saturday.

“He hasn’t had a run in the team, there’s no doubt about that, but since he left Wigan he hasn’t really had a run in anyone’s team. Maybe he’s one that might have to leave in the summer.

“If Duke wants to move, he can, it’s not a problem. I know Nathan from Wigan and if he looks at himself - and I don’t want this to be a slagging match because it isn’t - he hasn’t done it since he left Wigan.

“Watford, I took him to Derby, he played in a pretty average environment there in fairness to him. Then he went to Greece, then he went to Preston. This was a great opportunity for him and he’s a great lad, but he just hasn’t done it.”

But the Town manager isn’t entirely ruling out Ellington getting back to his best and while he’s still at Portman Road says he’ll remain in contention: “He’s got a year to go on his contract and you never say never. As long someone’s here and working hard, I’ve always got time for them, but sometimes it might be better for someone to move on.”

As for Peters, Town’s longest-serving player having initially impressed in a trial in 2004, Jewell admits that the 24-year-old, whose only appearance for the Blues in 2011/12 came in the Carling Cup loss to Northampton, hasn’t had too many opportunities since he took over at Portman Road in January last year.

The Canadian international spent time on loan in League One towards the end of last year where the Blues boss says he failed to impress: “Jaime went to Bournemouth and Bournemouth didn’t want to keep him. I think it’s about time Jaime moved on as well.

“I know he’s a bit of a fans’ favourite and everything else and he hasn’t had a look-in for me, but where would I play him? Carlos has done exceptionally well, Lee Martin’s done well on the right, so has JET, so there’s been no room for him.”

Keep him. A year left on his contract. He'll probably play out of his skin in 6 months time like the other bloodsuckers we've had at the club.

i think back to the fanfare surrounding JP when we snaffled him away from Chelsea and Man Utd. Was a major coup and when you think back to his performance against Arsenal, I like so many here am really disappointed that we couldnt find space for him in our squad that is so obviously bursting with talent. Not. I would personally have played him at RB with Edwards ahead of him on the wing but frankly, would just like him to have been given a chance

Ellington. Hopeless. Hapless. Clearly, should have signed the other half of that Wigan duo

Another example of short termism thinking. As I have stated before I am probably naive but I would prefer a management team that actually made the players already on the books better players; instead of writing off players who 'haven't caught the manager's eye in training' and bringing in a trail of new ones who more often than not are no better than the ones who have been shown the door. Neither Ellington nor Peters has been given much of a chance under PJ. What has the management team done to encourage any chance of inclusiveness in what has been a poor squad seasonlong? What is absolutely clear now is that two players contracted to us for another season have no future with us now. To get rid of them will cost us as will the recruitment of the necessary replacements. From a management perspective another two casualties in a flawed management strategy.

Difficult to argue Peters "hasn't been given a chance", he's been at the club ages and hasn't done well enough, including going out to Bournemouth where he didn't exactly set the world alight. He's had more of a chance than anyone else I can think of. He may settle at League 1 or 2 level, that's not really the sort of quality to get us promotion is it?
And if Ellington hasn't impressed well enough in training, impossible for the manager to put him in on game day, at his age I'd imagine he should have grasped that by now!

didnt really like reading the comments that PJ made about both players i.e slagging match part and saying Peters can go too ...makes them both sound like theyve been used, Please PJ try to be more restrained you would never have heard Sir Bobby talking about any player in that way even if he thought it thats what we want from you also, be a statesman for our club please your not that hard ball...

Jamie Peters - a youngster with potential, a long way from home - needed GOOD coaching, and an arm round the shoulder on occasions - Did he get it ?? NO.

Poor man management from the Manager, and Coaching not up to previous high standards.

If you move on Jamie - good luck - chances are you will be treated better elsewhere. After all you are a younster, and because of that, you will have been up against it here under the current regime. Just ask others.

............. so annoying - another 24 year old told where the door is - what is wrong with these so called experts who are supposed to be able to shape up 'young players with potential'. ????????????????????????????????????????????????

Not just players who are milking the supporters - and laughing all the way to the bank.

I am sure Bournemouth coaches will have been as equally unimpressed from some of the performances we have seen from the more established senior players this season.

Jaime might not be quite good enough for a first choice place and whilst his height has let him down a couple of times in defence he has put in some very credible performances at full back both right and left back and done some pretty good man marking jobs. Quite frankly he could have played left back at Doncaster on Saturday and contributed more than the hapless Sonko.

As with Ainsley, Jewell is sending out a clear message to these players that he doesn't think they are capable or trust them with a first team start. Hardly motivational management.

With seven substitutes back next year then a Jaime Peters could cover both right and left back better than Smith or Delaney in this position.
