Town Draw Bristol Rovers at Home
Town Draw Bristol Rovers at Home
Thursday, 14th Jun 2012 09:19

Town have drawn Bristol Rovers at home in the first round of the Capital One Cup.

The Blues last met the League Two side in the third round of the FA Cup in January 1998 when Town won 1-0 in a replay at Portman Road with David Johnson scoring the goal. The first tie had been played in icy conditions at the Memorial Ground and had ended 1-1 with Mick Stockwell netting for the Blues.

The most famous meeting between the clubs also came in the FA Cup on the way to Wembley in 1978. The first game at Eastville ended 2-2 with Robin Turner scoring twice, again in wintry weather, before the Blues won the replay 3-0 at Portman Road with Clive Woods, Mick Mills and Paul Mariner on the scoresheet.

The clubs have never met in the League Cup, while Rovers have had the better of the games between the clubs overall, winning 15 (15 in the league), drawing nine (seven) and with Town victorious on 13 (nine) occasions.

The match is likely to be played on Tuesday 14th August ahead of the start of the Championship campaign on the following Saturday, although the Football League is allowing clubs to move games to the preceding Saturday.

I remember the hail storm when we played them in the FA Cup at their place in 1998, it caused genuine pain!

Gasheads going down!

Hopefully we will put out a decent team and not leave experienced players out of the squad as we did against Northampton last year.

We need to simply start the season winning matches even if it means fielding the best side each match.

Winning builds confidence.

All we need now is a sensible ticket pricing package from Cleggy for this unattractive Cup tie to attract a decent gate - how about kids for a quid and the same for season ticket holders !? !?

Agree with debenturedave, let kids in for a quid, adults a tenner, statrt the season with a decent crowd and a win. Simple!

Would've preferred an away tie. I've never been to the Memorial Ground - that's what I like about away ties at this stage of the comp, visiting grounds you've never been to before.

Funny thing is though, I do not remember us playing there in the FA Cup in 98 - I'd have had the end of season highlights on VHS as well.

I still plan to visit PR for this tie though.

Good draw and surely a 'home win'?

Hopefully, unlike last season. This means we can put a "new team" together and let them get to know eachother in a competitive match, AT home. A win would do great, and we should play our best team!

Are we interested in winning this match or will we put out a reserve team as we did last year and get our just deserts?
Because of this I shall be saving my money and staying at home.
