Jewell: A Rude Awakening
Saturday, 25th Aug 2012 18:11

Blues boss Paul Jewell says his side’s 6-0 defeat at Blackpool was a rude awakening after their good start to the Championship season. The Town manager didn’t think anyone could have foreseen the eventual result during the first half.

Jewell said: “I don’t think that in the first 44 minutes you could see that coming. I thought we had as much of the ball as them. But we didn’t do an awful lot with it and we gifted them goals.

“The second goal came at a crucial time, right on half-time, and it meant it was going to be an uphill task in the second half. But once the third goal went in, we capitulated, I have to say.

“I think it’s a rude awakening,” he added. “I think the spirit in the squad is good, there’s no doubt about that, but that’s a test what happens out there.

“We played exceptionally well on Tuesday, battled away against Blackburn and in a week we’ve gone from the sublime to the ridiculous. That’s been our Achilles’ heel for a long time. On our day we’re good but when we’re not on our day...

“I wouldn’t say that it was one-way traffic in the first half today, we were definitely in the game but we didn’t do enough in their box and when it came in our box we just gave silly goals away.”

The Blues boss thought his side were particularly susceptible on the break: “They counter-attacked us all the time. It wasn’t as if they had bouts of pressure and were banging on the door and banging on the door.

“The sixth goal was a classic. We’re 5-0 down a we’ve got four players out the game with a minute to go. We lose it and they’re back at us.

“Counter-attacking’s hurt us badly today and when we’ve had the ball in situations, we haven’t done enough with it, and when the ball’s been turned over we’ve been exposed.”

Jewell had praise for the opposition: “They’re a good team. You can’t give teams like this goals like we did and expect to win matches.

“They’ve got a lot of flair players in their team, who work exceptionally hard and they’re a good team. But to lose 6-0 feels horrible.”

Blackpool manager Ian Holloway thought the result flattered his side: “This time of year you get the odd freak result, and I think that was one, to be perfectly blunt.

“I think to go in at half-time the reflection of the game was wrong. I didn’t think we deserved to have a two-goal lead. Our goalie made a brilliant save.

“I thought they got out too easy, I thought they passed it, they looked dangerous and it flattered us at half-time, to be perfectly honest.

“I went mad at half-time, I didn’t think we understood how to win the ball back, they had too much time on it. They caused my back four too many problems because the midfield didn’t get it right.

“In the second half I was delighted. I thought we were much better. And we needed to be. Goals change games, that’s what I keep talking about, and so far we’ve managed to get them a the right times, at vital times, in the early games.”

Time to splash the cash evans. since evans has arrived we have spent 13,736,800 on players transfers coming in and have received 13,974,400 from players going out so for all of those saying ME has spent 30 million on players this is so not true. If we can't compete with the likes of Bristol city,Brighton etc the so called lower teams then we are in deep excrement and will never get out of this league. If you look at our league positions over the last 10 years we have gone from a team challenging for promotion to a mid-table side and if the problems regarding the club both on and off the field are not resolved it will be a real battle and we will fall even further behind. Huddersfield for example have spent 3.040.400 in the close season 7 times more than we have so I don't want to hear the FFP bullsh*t spend the money evans or ship out.

Those figures do not include add ons for wickham either so add another 4m to incoming transfer fees when it happens!

Right..... This happened last year the same comments from fans with the same for and against jewell. When will it end? When will the excuses stop? Jewell has been in charge for long enough this is his third season where have we improved?
It doesn't matter which players come in young and hungry or older and experienced if you are tactically lacking and the coaches don't have the ability Coach weaknesses out of players then what the f@ck do you expect
ME will not give him any money he doesn't trust him with his money and I don't blame him!
Yeah ok it's only the 3rd game in but it's the same old story year after mediocre year!

On the Bright side Harry will be with us by December.... Merry Xmas!!!

Look at their bench and then look at ours, says it all we do not have the quality in depth.. It is not rocket science to determine why, Jewell has not and will not be given any money to bring in that quality.
Loach; 150k
Hewitt; still wet behind the ears,
Chambers; free.

Ivor.... Yes of course! I'm sure he could Instill some "fight fight fight" into our midfield and the press conferences wil be more entertaining with a few hand knitted puppets on hand rather than the current " blame everyone else but me" muppets we have now!

afrodid - a very interesting post. Thanks for those figures. I was labouring under the generally accepted premise that ME has poured in millions. As I said in an earlier post, I was struck by Alex Mathie's assertion today that ME will not get the cheque book out again until Jewell either succeeds or goes. His other assertion was that we are nowhere near good enough to seriously compete in this league.

There's no shame in losing away to one of the promotion favourites, but to concede six goals in doing so is unacceptable.

The result was bad but Blackpool should go up this season in an automatic spot, the trouble is that when Town go two or three down they don't have the belief in getting anything out the game! We need a top class striker to give defenders confidence that we can still get a point even if 2 or 3 down. I would suggest we sign Simon Church and place him along side Chops. And if it doesn't work take off JET or Martin if their having a bad game, and let Scotland have a go! SIMPLES.

Reality check today im afraid, mind you, holloway did say we where one of the best sides to play there in a while, so we have to take some positives out of it! but yet again our defense has let us down, and thats not just the back 4 btw... thats the starting 11.. chambers is a great defender and smith is ok.. but we need a 6ft3/6ft4 no nonsense cb, i genuinly still believe we still have never replaced jason de vos.. we need that kind of cb again! we need another winger.. jeff hughes from notts county? boyd from peterborough? he can also play in the whole behind chops, and we need another striker.. id personally go for Jay Bothroyd, 6ft3, hes played with chops before and is proven in this league! qpr would be to happy to let him go. Let's not get to down about this result because remember, we wont play a better side this season then blackpool, some of there football is breathtaking! positive thinking and a positive attitude and we will do fine, its obvious we need additions, but with new faces, im sure we can compete for the top 6! COYB! <3

to be honest, there are no certainties to go up, and no team in this league to be concerning us.. all well and good our squad having a great spirit.. just got to be a clinical and winning spirit, not a half measured one..

I don't think there is a big gulf between us and the very best teams in this division. We were undone by two basic mistakes and got punished for both. If we are going to progress we have got to give ourselves a chance by stopping making so many basic errors in defensive areas. After their second goal they then just picked us off at ease as we chased the game. Fair play to them they were very clinical and the lad Ince was superb.

I am a lot more positive about the team and PJ this season but they need to learn from this defeat and quickly.

It been a long time since I've seen so many Ipswich fans head for the exit so early.

Having been there and witnessed this latest debacle I believe Ian Holloway is being very kind to us. We never once looked like scoring and although we had plenty of possession it was all done in midfield and at the back which Blackpool just watched and waited to pounce. On the Tommy Smith debate sorry but the guy is just not commanding enough and falls alseep far too often - Saturday I thought he was very poor and we desperately need to remedy this position quickly. Cresswell and Chopra had a poor games and our goalkeeper who I had reservations about before we signed him is ordinary to say the least. I have seen him in action 4 times now this season and he has not caught one cross and I thought he should have done better with 2 of the goals. Chambers gift pass gave away the second goal and sadly it was game over. Make no mistake Blackpool are a good side and oh how I wish we could play their quick attacking football. Jet continues his poor patch of form and in reality not one player covered themselves in glory at Bloomfield Road. Unless PJ gets another 3 decent signings in and please someone with some pace, as we have none, this will be another season of mediocrity or worse. Sorry to be so despondent but travelling all that way to watch such an inept performance annoys me intensely and this happens far too often.

I always felt it was the job of the Captain to stop a defeat turning into a rout.
Still, let's bear in mind this was Blackpool not Peterborough. And I am hopeful this serves as a sharp reminder of the realities of this division.

COYB!

Just seen a quote from another source about us being "not good enough in either box" and that we "need to bring players in"
When is this guy going to stop taking us for fools, change the record and take some responsibility himself?
This is now his squad and he has to produce something this season or it is not good enough. I am not saying he wont but just saying he needs to.

Its true freak results do happen early season, ask any Arsenal fans, not even town has conceded 8 but they turned their season around after a poor start. We haven't started badly, at least in comparison to seasons not to long ago. The important thing now, that will show if we've learn't from and moved forward from similar results is the reaction to the next game or two. What I don't want to see is another Peterborough performance following the Southampton game. Carlisle and more importantly Huddersfield matches could provide a lot of pointers to whether the club and players have moved forward.
I'm not panicking I just want to see improvement and lessons learn't. Surely not to much to ask is it???

I don't think we can hide behind the label of "freak result." This was only a freak result if it didn't reflect the statuses of the two teams. I'm not so sure that this was the case. If one team puts 6 past another, even if a couple of the goals are "dodgy", that still leaves a big ability gap. It's ok to have some slick passing etc., but you have to have an end result, and as many have written already, we lack the people up front to achieve this. [See Man. C. vs. Southampton for a comparison, and at least the Saints managed to score!] Maybe our result reflected the young age of our team and a little bit more experience would have stemmed the rot, but then we are "emphasising youth," so we can't have it both ways. The sad conclusion is we are not good enough at the moment. For me our season is balanced on a knife edge now. We can either get over this quickly and probably at best hang around mid-table, or we can go on a downward spiral and get drawn into the relegation battle. I really don't know which is the most likely. All power to the travelling faithful, by the way. You came over loud and clear over the Internet. No doubt, like me, you're still feeling Blue (Geddit?).

"The goals we conceded are beyond belief," he added.

"We've played Luton, who are a Conference team, and Southend - they're not easy games but we've conceded goals from crosses and set plays, so that tells you one area we need to improve.

"We need to work harder to stop crosses, we need to work harder not to give silly free-kicks away, we need to be more professional in the right areas and stronger, mentally and physically."
