Jewell and Staff Hold Blackpool Post-Mortem
Monday, 27th Aug 2012 06:02

Boss Paul Jewell was planning to hold a post-mortem with his staff in the wake of Saturday's 6-0 loss at Blackpool. With the Capital One Cup tie at Carlisle on Tuesday, the Blues stayed at a hotel in the North-West after the heavy defeat.

Jewell said: “We’ll definitely sit down as a staff and look at it, analyse it. But I just think they were cheap goals. It’s not just the goals [themselves], it’s times we give goals away and the manner we give goals away.

“I don’t think our keeper Scott Loach has had too many saves to make. I looked at the stats at half-time. We had more crosses than them, we had more shots than them and yet we found ourselves 2-0 down.

“The key element that I keep coming back to is that we’ve got to be better in their final third and we’ve got to do better in our final third, simple as that.”

He added: “It’s not going to be a pleasant night tonight [Saturday], that’s for sure. But we’re here, we’ve got beaten 6-0, we’ve got to deal with it.

"We’ve got to dust ourselves down and look forward to training [on Sunday] and look forward to the game.

“We can’t do anything about this game. We can learn about it, you learn about certain individuals, but we’ve got to move on to Tuesday.”

Jewell insisted the youth of his side had no bearing on the manner of the defeat: “I’m not going to blame the young squad for that because I thought some of the goals were basic errors.

“The first one is a mistake from absolutely nowhere - there’s no danger. The second one we’re playing football in the wrong area. We want to pass the ball but to pass the ball on the halfway line with a minute [of the half] to go is not what we’re after. That was an experienced player.

“You get through to half-time at 1-0, you never know. Even at 2-0, the next goal’s vital and once they scored [the third the game was over].

“They’re a good team Blackpool, they’ve been together for quite a while, they’ve got players who are playing with a massive amount of confidence and Ian Holloway’s done a brilliant job here. You look at their bench and they’ve got players who can change the course of the game on it.”

Seasiders’ midfielder Thomas Ince scored two, assisted three and was even involved in the early stages of the sixth and Jewell says the 20-year-old, the son of ex-England skipper Paul, has made significant progress recently: “He’s a good player. He’s come on leaps and bounds in the last year. Ian’s got a lot of flair players who are playing with a lot of confidence.

“They’ve got the master himself, Kevin Phillips, who is an example to all young players. His movement and his understanding of the game is second to none. I’m sure Thomas Ince and Matt Phillips and all these players will learn a lot just training with Kevin.”

The Blues are set to train at Fleetwood today, Jewell having decided to stay in the North-West having worked out that his squad would spend 24 hours on their coach if the travelled back home after Blackpool and then made the return trip to Carlisle. They trained at Stoke’s facilities on Friday.

Sick of the same excuses coming from Jewel, he has been saying that weve been in talks with players for past seasons and promising new signings but when we do have talks they always fall through and players go elsewhere-WHY !
We sold Wickham and got good money yet we canot seem to sign down new players.
I think that basically we are offering peanuts and players and clubs dont want to do buisness, therefore we lose out.
As for loan deals wot is the point they play good for us for couple of months the players move back to own club, and as we have so many loanees we are left high and dry.
Wots goin on with this club ! Come on Town start coffing up money.

As I have said before, the moaners on this site represent a miniscule proportion of a 20,000 attendance at Portman Road. As the saying goes "empty vessels make the most noise" How true!!

Kev, wait and see how we respond to the heavy defeat first. We've had three tough opening games so lets see if we can pick ourselves up. Personally if you'd put these three openers midway through the season and told me we'd pick up 4 points and could easily have beaten Blackburn I'd have been more than happy!

Evans you have four options:-

Option 1 - Back Jewell with some money, we have already lost out to other clubs due to lack of funds.

Option 2 - If you won't back Jewell, sack him and bring someone in who you will back.

Option 3 - Sell the club to someone who will spend a bit of cash.

Option 4 - Do nothing. This however is not an option but probably the one you will chose.

£500 gor a S/T, I expect more from our owner for that. Something must change in the next four days or its another season of boredom!

I wonder how many people have seen Smith play for New Zealand, or captain them. He's a young player and he needs confidence. He looked good towards the end of last year considering he was next to donkey Delaney, but if we don't let our young players make mistakes they will never develop into good players. Same goes for Hyam, Carson, Murray and even JET. I'm far happier seeing these guys make mistakes than I was seeing Bullard, Sonko, Bowyer et al doing the same last year.

I`ve seen luton away, west ham and bristol games this year so far, and it is quite apparent Jewell has not and will not be given money to get quality in. Aside from loans and frees, he`s spent 150k on loach and a similar amount for hewitt.

The bench on saturday showed that, the lack of depth to our squad is telling. They could bring on players of the calibre of phillips and dickov. Look at the u21`s there is only 3 players eligible, whight, burke and lawrence the rest of the team is made of u18`s. That is not good enough and is a clear indication of just how small Jewells options are.

As for the Jewell out brigade be careful what you wish for, as surely whoever comes in will be dependant on what evans backs up with cash.

so another hammering post mortem from jewell and hutch, I have not bothered to work it out but has there ever been another manager in our history with so many stuffings in what is a relativly short tenure up to this point. Would say that as an average before a ball had been kicked most fans are 80% behind jewell meaning that as itfc fans we all want him to succed but all have doubts as to his ability to do this and the reverse at blackpool just chips away at not only the players confidence but the fans also. One to many stuffings for me including the worst result in the clubs history...

It's the right time for this sort of thing to happen.

It should sort out any complacency problem if not the on-goal shot percentage.

This was a terrible result make no mistake about that but with a young team, consistency is the hardest thing to achieve. However, P.J. hinted that it was the more experienced players that let the side down and not the youngsters and if this is the case perhaps we have more dead wood to remove before we can move on.

The biggest worry now is that the sheer size of this defeat might dent confidence but the players only have to look at the refreshingly honest appraisal of the Town team from Ian Holloway the Blackpool manager to know we are still not that far away from being very good and this will only come with some patience and some time.

Now the dust has settled and I have had the time to digest that awful result, the first half performance on Saturday was very good but unfortunately our defensive frailties have not been remedied despite two new additions. Sadly you always think we will concede and until this is put right with a top class imposing centre back and a goalkeeper who commands the penalty area we will struggle. Hopefully NDaw will give us the steel required in midfield and we need to get some pace into the team as well. Because we have no pace we have to pass pass and pass without the cutting edge required. I am still with PJ but it is no coincidence that this run of terrible beatings have been under his reign which is surpirsing when he had such an organised defence in the Wigan promotion year. Good luck PJ but its in your hands to get 3/4 new additions and quick. Still need another goalkeeper a centre back a striker and a wide man with pace.

Doesn't leave much of the pitch left does it?

Quote "The second one we're playing football in the wrong area."
I think you'll find better and best teams play football all over the pitch but they don't give the ball away. Accurate passing is what is needed. Stating the bl**dy obvious I know.

our whole squad needs a reality check.. for some reason even getting thrashed 6 nil has not given them a head shake.. each of them will be blaming the next man.. Paul Jewell has been given a job after a poor show at Derby.. we all know saturdays showing was not the first weak effort.. dont care result may have flattered Blackpool.. certain players are not up to it

What is really sad, is some of the squad actually thought they were going to go top of the league.

Unless he can buy real quality then stick with the young players. We may struggle but this cycle of signing loanees and short term veterans has been going on since Magilton was sacked.

I have been critical of Mr Jewell in the past. However, one defeat, even a six-nil, does not justify his sacking. It is a new, young team; let it have a chance to come together and the manager to lead an improvement. I think that this team has huge potential and I would like to see it being given a full season to prove it. Remember that even Sir Bobby Robson had bed results!

Uninspiring pre season results, uninspiring transfers, 4 points from 3 games. 1 own goal, last minute winner then a 6-0 wake up call.

Chopra is a half decent player but support received is minimal. Needs a Centre forward up alonside him.
Scotland - still sharp still worth playing but a bit on the senior side, will not score 20 goals - if we had a Lambert (Southampton) type CF (or a poorer version) who could win a few headers and scare defences chopra could swap with Scotland to play alongside this type of player - meaning we would have a game changer on the bench.
Martin is an exceptional talent however too likely to get booked / sent off and unless offered a decent contract is on his way anyway.
Carson - Had a purple patch and scored some important goals - doesnt seem to have either been given a chance or is not progressing as we all hoped he would.
JET has been here a year and still looks like he has natural talent but for some reason no confidence whatsoever and at the moment may as well not be on the pitch.
Hyam VERY good prospect but is he good enough to play in midfield with another young talent (Luongo) against experienced hard grown men in a very competitive league.
N'Daw - big & strong - just what we need (but perhaps another Sonko I am guessing).
Cresswell - good playerbut £4 million plus for a decent left back could buy 3-4 players (however money will obviously not be reinvested)
Smith - Another good young prospect - however may need a rest after olympics or to play alongside a centre back who has been there and done it - Mowbray / De Vos etc (although a full international - please note this is New Zealand we are talking about)
Chambers - To early to tell but would prefer someone tall and strong who wins everything in the air who leads from the back alongside him.
Edwards - good pro, debatable if positional sense is good enough to play at the back and may be better to utilise in midfield (great shot on him)
Drury - seems like he has a bit of class about him but is he championship quality?
Stevenson - seems like he was bought as a squad player nothing more
2 Keepers - both seem much of a muchness - both seem honest enough but with a defence with players that we have had over the last few years (Post DeVos / Mobray etc) difficult to tell how good they both are. A rock solid defence makes a keeper look good.

In summary we have never replaced Holland with a ball winning strong midfielder, never replaced MacAuley (though he was not as good as de Vos / Mowbray) and we have no spine. Too many times it has been men against boys. Last year it was get loads of old (washed up) players, this year it is go back to youth.

Please Marcus, now is time to implement a long a plan. I applaud Paul Jewell for investing in youth (without any type of budget strategy or structure) but we must buy a couple of experienced big hard (you will not pass) defenders, at all costs - even at the expense of a big money exit for cresswell if you must, 2 wingers, a ball winning centre midfielder (possibly N'Daw will do the job?) a big striker who can win the ball in the air and hold it up (A better version of Alan Lee) and we will then not ship goals at the rate we have over the last couple of years.
My own humble opinion however every team has a central spine running through the centre, where has ours been over the last few years!!!!!

Ince is a good player. He jumps and bounds about like a fit JET. Ian's got a lot of flair players who can actaully pass the ball and shoot on target.
I'm sure Thomas Ince and Matt Phillips and all these players will have learnt a lot by knocking a handful of goals past us this weekend."

“They've got the master himself, Ian Holloway's done a brilliant job here.
