Deal for Posh Pair Falls Through
Wednesday, 29th Aug 2012 23:01

Peterborough United chairman Darragh MacAnthony has revealed that George Boyd and Paul Taylor have turned down their proposed move to Town. The pair were at Portman Road this afternoon and underwent medicals but were unable to agree personal terms.

MacAnthony tweeted: “Just had a phone call re Boyd and Taylor Posh fans from [Peterborough director of football Barry Fry] to tell me that they have turned down the move to Ipswich after meeting to discuss terms today with Ipswich and have failed to agree terms.

“This is the reason people shouldn't discuss bids been accepted etc until things are signed, sealed and delivered. Transfer window is mad isn't it?”

He later added: "Before Posh fans wet their pants, still 48 hours till window closes and I hate the uncertainty as much as rest of you on this. Honest opinion."

A statement on the Peterborough United website subsequently released reads: "George Boyd and Paul Taylor have rejected personal terms at Ipswich Town.

"Winger George Boyd and striker Paul Taylor have rejected personal terms with Ipswich Town after meeting club officials on Wednesday.

"The pair both passed medicals at Portman Road, but terms could not be agreed.

"The transfer listed pair both played for Posh in the 3-2 defeat at Reading on Tuesday night with Taylor scoring the opening goal."

Posh accepted a Town offer believed to be in the region of £2 million on Monday with the pair, whose current deals are up next summer, transfer-listed having refused to sign new contracts at London Road.

Lot's of 'speculation' by the know-it-alls on here I see.

Will we ever find out the 'REAL' reason?

Is it too late to ask Stevenson tom stay? At least he is happy with his wages.

You can blame agents, players demands, etc etc but other clubs in this division seem to be able to sign players fairly quick so why cant we?
Bristol city have signed two decent strikers, leeds have signed good players, forest, Palace, etc etc.
I dont care what others say we were still better off as fans before Evans showed up!!

Why on earth don't we get the contracts agreed and signed (Subject to satisfactory Medical examination) before wasting our money on the medicals, which I'm sure would not be cheap, I wonder what our annual medical examination costs are against all of these failed negotiation agreements etc.)

When Marcus took over at this club - it was all about ambition for the Premier League. I have not seen any so far this season - i.e. Blackpool and Carlisle. Who have we signed this season that actually demonstrates ambition to be a premier league team?

With regard to the wage structure - I cannot believe that Peterborough pay out more that us (I could be proven wrong) so our failure to close these deals is even more fustrating. You have to invest in a club, buying decent players if you want to get promoted. Not rely on the same personnell that failed the previous two years.

As I have said before hype nothing but hype from the club we all heard it all before, we have third rate players, very poor management, and my club in a real mess, facts are we will be lucky to stay in the Championship

roytheboy , most clubs get the agent to agree in principle before travelling for a medical it just all seems to go wrong at the final stage which is why Clegg looks responsible either that or he puts players off the club . Why ? Your guess is as good as mine !

The main trouble with these deals is that the players know they can get higher wages if they let their contracts run down as there will be no fee added to the deal like Mac,Norris ,Leadbitter etc leaving their clubs with nothing .
All Boyd and Taylor have done is cost Peterboro a few million pounds

roytheboy - spot on.

I'm sure there's a reason for doing the medical first but I'm fecked if I know what it is!!

Just spend the £2m on the defence!!!! That must be the priority.

Not bothered. I didn't want either of them anyway - they've hardly set the world on fire at Peterborough.

This has caused huge debate here and for me has thrown up the following:

1. Due diligence prior to a medical in obtaining wage demands could have stopped this and at the very least not wasted many peoples time. I say ‘could' as you are dealing with footballers and agents who, for the most don't care if the shirt they are wearing is red, blue, white etc.
2. Never go public on a deal until it's done - break the rule and you look stupid
3. We cannot/will not finalise deals and attract quality players - why is this? It is not all financially related IMO.
4. Related to number 3 , what is the strategy that ME has for the club. What does he intend to put in yearly? What does he intend to take out? What is his exit strategy? How committed is he? Financially does staying where we are actually benefit the group?
There are lots more I can think of but we all know regular numbers at PR are dwindling and the true soul of this club is starting to disappear.

I know this might be abit I a long shot but as nothing has come out from the club yet is this story even true???

Or is it possible that town are trying to resurrect this deal a I wild have thought something would have been said by now??

Just a thought.

Well it concentrates the mind most wonderfully. A rather small group of players now know its up to them.

Rather we spent £2m on another decent CB and paying Wickham's wages for a season long loan rather than on these two.

Evans, Clegg make sure you close the door on your way out. I have lost all faith in them two clowns and I really hope Evans sells the club to a new owner who has what it takes to take this once great club forward. I feel sorry for PJ and I wouldn't blame him if he walks. Total shambles. EVANS AND CLEGG OUT! If we would of signed our targets over the past few months we would have a really good side.

It was too simple, Ipswich getting two quality players such as Boyd and Taylor. Something had to go wrong.

This doesn't make any sense, we are a bigger club, will pay higher wages, they live local(ish) and don't have anywhere else to go. They will sign, please please a CB too. Shame we won't see Mr Rhodes Saturday. Feel so miserable today!

I appreciate agents don't help...but while agreeing a fee surely one should ask what the player wants? if the player doesn't want to or show willingness to negotiate walk away.
a waste of everyones time!

marcus evans simon clegg.................... la la la la la f'ing useless. Shames me to say it but this club is a mockery wonder whatever happened to the wage cap system this year surely it must of been set too high for us to compete and bring in decent signings

all i can say is we are gonna be f#cked this season, rhodes going to blackburn ME will pocket the money from the sale we are due

We can not be held to ransom by Agents and Players looking to increase interest elsewhere. But neither can we seem to attract any above average championship players to come to PR any more. Is its all about the money?
Perhaps a lack of ambition by the Club?

How much can they possibly want that we cant afford? i know we have a wage structure in place, but surely (especially Boyd) we should be looking to offer near to what they want....

I agree with ridgeboy. It is wierd that nothing has come out from Portman road on this normaly and unfortunately it is normaly that a deal goes boo, they,Portman Road, are quick enough to tell us it is'nt their fault and that there are more irons in the fire. Now I posted I don't want these 2 last night when the story broke but so much of this just does'nt add up. This could be poshes chairman stiring crap up because Middlesborough have weighed in with an offer. So until we get a statement from Ipswic lets take a breath step back and just see whats actually going on. COYB.
