Jewell Has Specific Central Defensive Targets in Mind
Monday, 3rd Sep 2012 06:00

Town boss Paul Jewell has specific targets in mind as he looks to utilise the emergency loan market to add to his stretched central defensive options. Football League clubs are able to take players on loan for up to 93 days from next weekend.

Jewell is all too aware that with Damien Delaney moving on, he has been left with only two senior central defenders: “It’s an area of the team we need to improve, a blind man could see that. That’s one area, as well as other areas, that we’re looking to strengthen.

“You look around us and one thing which stands out is the size of us. We’ve brought Murph in and he’s been a big help to us physically with his size. We’ve got Guirane N’Daw who we’ve got to get fit. We’re trying to bring a bit of size in.

“I think that one long ball down the middle of our defence is an area where we’ve got to tighten up,” he added. “One long ball can’t cause us as many problems as it does and that’s where we need to improve, not just on the pitch, but also off the pitch with the squad we’re trying to assemble.”

Premier League clubs are often more willing to allow fringe players to move out on loan once the transfer window has closed, they've done all their business and have named their 25-man squads.

The Blues boss, who ideally wants loans with a view to permanent deals, says there are particular players he is hopeful of bringing in, even if he’s loathe to say he’s confident having had his fingers burnt before: “I haven’t just decided we need a centre-half, we’ve been trying to get one in for quite a while but it hasn’t quite happened for different reasons.

“There are specific players. I’m not going to say I’m confident because I said that after the Southend game. I know we need a centre-half and there are specific players that I’m looking to bring in.”

Peterborough director of football Barry Fry has said his club would be willing to allow George Boyd to join the Blues on loan with a view to a permanent deal in January, but Jewell says no deal along those lines is yet set up: “Nothing’s in place. I said on Thursday or Friday that I wouldn’t rule it out but obviously we need to improve other parts of the team as well as that.

“We like George Boyd, we think he’s a good player but there’s nothing in place to take him on loan, it might happen, but there’s nothing in place.”

Warky Wonderland - we've lost twice. 0-6 in the league, and out of the League Cup to a lower league club. I make that one win in five, not one loss in four. Do the math. Jewell out.

You do a massive disservice to the whole Sheepshanks regime by labelling it as incompetent. The first six years of the Burley era epitomised how a football club should be run, building year on year with prudent transfer acquisitions alongside the gradual integration of graduates from the youth system combining to produce a stylish brand of football that every fan will remember nostalgically. That it all crashed ultimately was of course incompetent because of the extent of mis-management but few would have predicted how the combined effects of qualifying for Europe and developing the North Stand would dismantle the club so spectacularly.

By comparison you might assume that finishing the transfer window with fewer defensive options than you had at the end of the previous season ranks lower in the scale of 'real incompetence' but by any definition of the word, incompetent it most surely is.

Have to say that Jewell is starting to worry me.

Last year we there was only Peterborough who let in more goals than us and all last season he said we had to improve our defence it happened for awhile with Collins and Sonko.

Ingarmarsson and Sonko were soon found out to be not good enough Collins was never persuded and all let go. Season ends and we let Delaney go and bring in Chambers
Smith has not had a break this summer and then we have the saying got to look after the young lads so they don't burn

18 months down the line and we are struggling for defenders stil and let in more goals than anyone in this division, if we can find 2.5 million on a striker then we must have the money to buy 2 top defenders. Is TAylor that good and will he score more than we let in so to speak.

Think Jewell will turn us in to a nice little team that flerts with the play off and make a few quid by selling players like TAylor and Hyam because it too good an offer but don't think he is the man to take the team up.

Blue04. Incompetence would be to not prepare for FFP.

I would love to know exactly what went on the DD on transfer day? was it Jewells choice or was it actually Clegg or Evans choice for him to leave? was Jewell promised a player and it never materialised? Please remember transfers/contracts are not always down to the manager so maybe getting rid of DD was in fact beyond Jewells control and maybe some fans should be asking for someone else head!!

How can idiots on this site say Jewell has no money he has just signed a player we dont need no matter how good he is but still no defenders YES he has had money the idiot goes and signs the wrong player.
We need defenders and all we will end up with are more useless loans Jewell is totally unable to manage JEWELL OUT

All has been said, what there is to say on this matter,,,
just one more thing, the worrying situation of loanees is that they will have all gone back to their mother clubs before christmas, which we all know is one of the busiest periods,
let us hope we have enough points on the board by then ????

Trouble is a blind man could see we need central defenders, one of them needs to be the team govenor, for about 4 seasons including all the time you have been in charge. It's about time you addressed the problems you where brought in to solve, instead of moaning about your own lack of progress!!

with any luck he gets who he wants and gets them with a set fee in place for when the window re-opens.
I don't think the long balls down the middle are the main worry though, i think we more often than not get caught out when our fullbacks bomb forward and people don't cover back. Wouldn't be surprised if we see the likes of Elokobi come in at left back and we sell Cressy in january as he fits the system better and it would bring in much needed funds

Seeing will be believing for any of Jewells targets, talk is cheap and defenders keep clean sheets! Personally I'm losing faith with Jewell although clearly its not all his fault. My concern is that after 18 months of him in charge as a unit they have made absolutely no progress and even given the financial limitations that he is being made to work with I'm afraid that the lack of progress is 100% down to the manager

My understanding is that PJ is looking to get loan players in with a view to making them permanent signings. If he has them in place this month for 90 days surely that means that they'll be here for all of December and can them be signed, all being well, in January. Am I missing something?

I'm taking it that he means st ledger and elokobi, they would be decent defeners st ledger is a international and elokobi is big and strong which is what we need at the back, and boyd would be nice too, in jewell we trust COYB!

I think it's max 93 days for a loan, I think that means there is a gap between the end and the transfer window. Not ideal but if Paul staggers the loans a little he can cover the 1st 93 days with some and the last 93 with others

i would like to see the statistics for teams playing more than 2 loanes for half a season or more, bet there not good. I think Carlos said it after last season "too many loan players playing for themselves"

Old Gold: I know that we all want permanent signings, but from the last day of August, this is no longer an option. He has to use loanees. That is his only option at the moment.

I still support PJ. He has a difficult rebuilding task. What makes it more difficult is RK destroyed the team and the present financial climate.

OK. we got stuffed by Blackpool, but Ian Holloway is doing an exceptional job there and sometimes you just have to give credit where it is due.

I did like the sound of Paul Taylor (on radio Suffolk). I think it will be shown that PJ bought well.

why dont you people listen to & read pjs comments properly before coming on here moaning about us looking for players on loan. he has clearly stated that these loans will be with a view to a permanent move. in my opinion thats a good way of doing it. if the loan works put for both parties the player signs, if not we're not stuck with a player that hasnt worked out. also of course if things go really badly, & pj does lose his job because of that, the new manager not stuck with players he not wants

My god how can anyone say we have a better team are they blind we lost 6-0 and 2-1 to a lowerleague side if thats progress we will be relegated will that be progress.
And for anyone who says loans will lead to them siging look at last season Andrews and Collins did they say No.
And the loans finish on the 19 th Dec so we have to play Xmas games with what we have now JEWELL OUT

Keeping up with the supermarket comparison

I would say that it was more like throwing away your last sices of bread and pouring away the last drop of milk because the sell by date was immenent. Going to the supermarket to buy new bread and milk, get side tracked by the offer of two bottles of wine for £7.00, only putting one in your basket. Paying £7.00 for the one plus agreeing a little more if it turns out to be a nice wine. Then realise you forgot your bread and milk and you are going to starve because the supermarket shuts for bank holiday.

Jewell for a career in politics. Then I'd understand where all the BS comes from.

After reading page 1 I thought it was a audition for
Supermarket sweep. Defenders isle 1, midfielders isle 2, and keepers and strikers isle 3 and the out of date players isle 4.
Also its not Jewels fault we have players who want a stupid wage a week, we've paid it in the past but look were that got us in the sh!t and we don't want to end up there again do we.

Perhaps Delaney threw a hissy fit as he was not getting game time and it was felt he would unsettle the rest of the squad ! If that was the case the answer was to release him to maintain unity ( and get rid of a high wage ) as he was never going to be more than a stand-by .

Forget about Boyd, we don't need anymore attacking midfielders. Ever since Keane was in charge we seem to be looking for loan players to sort out our problems in defence.
