Town Confirm Reo-Coker Deal
Sunday, 14th Oct 2012 01:16

Former Wimbledon, West Ham, Aston Villa and Bolton midfielder Nigel Reo-Coker has signed a three-month deal with the Blues. The 28-year-old has been a free agent since leaving the Trotters at the end of last season.

Reo-Coker told the club site: “Ipswich is a sleeping giant in the Championship. It’s a massive club with a great history and tradition. The facilities are first class and there is a terrific fanbase. It’s the right club at the right time for me and everything has just fallen into place.

“I had a good conversation with the manager. He’s highly respected in the game for what he has achieved and I know what he’s trying to do at the club.

“Ipswich may be at the wrong end of the table at the moment but it’s still early in the season and I’m sure with the manager and players the club have, it’s only a matter of time before things turn around.”

Former England U21 international Reo-Coker is with the Blues until January 12th and says he is open to where things might progress from there: “I’ve no plans after that. I’m here for three months and am looking forward to it.

“I want to do the best I can for Ipswich in that time and we will see where it goes after that.”

Describing Town as having a "fantastic club, very well structured", Reo-Coker wasn't put off by the Blues' current lowly position: "We're on the same page. So it all fell into place and I just need to get some games under my belt.

"I don't think you can look at the table after 10 games and think that's how it's going to be. About the same time last year Reading were in the relegation zone and they got promoted."

He says long-term he hasn't given up on playing at a much higher level having been on standby for the 2006 England squad: "I believe I still have the quality to be an international player."

Blues boss Paul Jewell says he's delighted to add Reo-Coker to his squad: “There were a few clubs after Nigel so we are delighted to have him here.

“He’s played a lot of football in the Premier League and has a wealth of experience, even though he’s only 28.

“He will give us a lot of drive and energy in midfield. I think we have lacked that player to go and win the ball back for us and Nigel will do that.

“He has leadership qualities and has skippered teams wherever he has played. He’s also a strong character and that is what we need at the moment.”

He is hoping to do well for the 3 months so a Premier League Club snaps him up in January. Hense why he chose to leave Bolton when they got relegated. Good signing for us in the short term however, pity it is not a 3 year deal but maybe that is too much to ask

With Taylor injured I would say this will be team and then bringing in Taylor for DJ Campbell when he is fit again.

Loach
Edwards Chamber Higginbottom Creswell
Martin Reo Coker Wellens Murphy
Campbell Moshni

Not far off Keanishs' team to be honest but would like to see Hyam come in at some point (probably for Wellens; but this would be a good team and taking a punt on Moshni causing problems with his physicality and unpredictable nature.

Hallelulah a decent midfielder plays the short game wins the ball back and scores a few. Also captain material if anyone he is our link to progression long term the premier league. He is the best we could hope for.... the closest to Matt Holland, Jim Magilton, Romeo Zondervan, John Wark... he if we can get him long term is exactly the player we have needed since jim magilton retired. If he stays you will see our once great club return to the heights. the year we failed to beat west ham in the play offs he was instrumental . He can and i indeed hope he will do this for us. Best signing since.....Marcus Stewart ! We never beat Hull away but i seriously think we will next week. Come On you blues!

I like the look of Keanish team also, Campbell for Chopra perhaps or Martin if he cannot start producing an end product.

Good player-pointless signing! The guy obviously couldn't get a premier side down south, next option itfc for 3 months, in the shop window, bugger off in jan! Good move eh, messers jewell, clegg,Evans! Whole thing reeks of desperation!

I'm with the "pointless signing" brigade. We've got 7 senior centre midfielders (and 3 kids apparently good enough to give squad numbers to) competing for 2 spots as it is, 3 of them loanees. If Reo-Coker is the best of any that we've got at the club (and pedigree would suggest he is, but then the list of rubbish journeymen who've come through the club and contributed nothing over the last decade is to numerous to count), then what was the point in bringing in the other loanees first? Can't we just build around the players who are realistically going to be at the club long-term?

my word. even after my repeated attempts at illustrating, in a very base and crude manor, i admit, your profuse yellow-ish puse, ill and wrong diffuse, you're at it again. why not read a book or two? it will make you infinitely more interesting. mwah.

I used to hope there was a long term plan, all that targeting young hungry players bollocks but I don't care anymore I just want this miserable season to get better and if he signs another 20 loanees and we win some games I'll be happy.

Probably true that he is using us to be in shop window and will walk away in Jan but is there a chance we have told him to show us he is worth the kind of money he is asking for? and we might make him an offer along those lines in Jan? Just a thought.

Another midfielder, another loan player, another short term deal and in my opinion, another nail in pj's coffin and I'm talking as someone who is desperate for him to turn it around.

How many midfielders do we have now?! How many loans?

H'es a good player mind you but if he's a free agent and thinks Ipswuch are massive club (he even said "Sleeping Dog"!!) wonderful facilities blah blah, why has he only committed for 3 months? Am I right in thinking that you can still sign free agents past the window?

We are currently in the mire and Reo Coker is a quality player who can drive us forward.
I never ever expected Luongo to play a full season in a relegation scrap. Drury has gone off the boil in my opinion and offers little. Martin has absolutely no end product so thats 3 midfielders you can easily replace and add to that the injuries Hyam seems to pick up these days why is Reo Coker not a great signing.
Team for Hull
ALB (can't possibly play Loach after his howlers and I don't rate ALB either)
Edwards Chambers Higginbotham Cresswell
Wellens NDaw (Cant believe he was dropped for Cardiff)
JET Reo Coker Murphy
Campbell
Probably be nothing like it but its fun trying to pick our team.

If you google reo-Coker nearly everything is about pay and pay disputes. He'll take our money like bowyer and Bullard. Lets hope he performs more like Andrews. I have my doubts.

For some reason I dont think we will be seeing N'Daw play for us again - things going on behind the scenes at PR last home I think. Hence Reo -Coker's signing. He will however not be staying here long term. If we cant attract / sign the likes of Austin, Ward , Pearce, Sharp etc etc , what chance have we of signing a 38yr old who has undoubted Prem quality?

Team for sat? Id go with

...................................................ALB (he know worse than Loach)...........

Edwards......Chambers.........Higgingbottom.......Cresswell (needs a rest btw)

.....................................................Luongo...............................................

Excellent signature, to have a classy player with a good engine, could be the answer to stop our fragile displays up to now. Also, I read online today that apparently Alan Pardew and Martin Jol were ready to make a move for him!

Potentially a very good player at championship level but I'm worried that as its only 3 months and he hasn't played in months, that it will only be short term.
Also it's another player in a position where we are not short of numbers. We now have 6 central midfielders at the club yet only 1 of these is contracted past the summer and he is the 1 Jewell refuses to play!!!
It seems to me Jewell is thrashing about aimlessly in the vaIn hope he strikes lucky. There seems to be no forward plan. This signing doesn't excite me as it should.
That said, as a fellow son of Thornton Heath, welcome to ITFC Nigel!!

I certainly didn't see thAT ONE COMING , AN EXCELLENT ACQUISITION.

Team for Hull Keep faith with Loach, one bad game, deserves a chance to redeem himself.

For me Cresswell is the one to replace, might wake him up. Moshni at centre-half and HIGGINBOTHAM AT LEFT BACK.

Feel that the real worry is Chopra who has done nothing recently and I wonder whether his head will ever be right after all that has gone on. No-one seems to be giving him a break at the moment. He needs to be able to play his football.

Good signing. Please can we now just stick to 4-4-2. Cresswell, Higginbotham, Mohsni, Edwards -- Martin, Luongo, Reo-Coker, Murphy -- Chopra, DJ. Simples! Liking the look of our team now. We can still bring in the likes of Wellens, N'Daw, Drury and Scotland when we please! COYB
