Jewell: Henderson Signing Will Add Competition
Tuesday, 16th Oct 2012 15:09

Town boss Paul Jewell says eighth loan signing Stephen Henderson will compete with Scott Loach and Arran Lee-Barrett for a place in his side. Henderson (pictured with chief executive Simon Clegg and fellow new addition Nigel Reo-Coker) has joined the Blues on a three-month loan from West Ham.

Jewell told the club site: “We’re delighted to have Stephen here and he will add to the competition we have in the goalkeeping areas.”

“Scott’s confidence has taken a little knock just lately — that happens to every player at some stage. He’ll get through it and be better for it, but bringing Stephen in gives us other options, along with Arran as well.

“It’s been well documented that we tried to bring Stephen to the club last season but Portsmouth did not accept our offer.

“We weren’t the only club after him and obviously he’s a West Ham player now and playing at a Premier League club.

“He’s been on the bench for them this season but when the opportunity came up to bring him here on loan, it’s one we wanted to take because he’s a very good goalkeeper and can only benefit the squad.”

Henderson, who is subject to a 24-hoour recall clause throughout his 93-day spell rather than just the usual first month, says he’s looking forward to playing some football while at Portman Road having made only two Capital One Cup appearances since his move to Upton Park in March: “I’ve not played much football this season so when I was told I could go out on loan, my agent contacted Ipswich and once I knew they wanted me, that was it.

“I’ve played here a few times. It’s a fantastic football club and I’m really looking forward to the three months here and showing what I can do.”

New signings Henderson and Nigel Reo-Coker, who signed a three-month short-term deal on Saturday, have been handed respectively the number 13 and 23 shirts.

Is this now officially the most amount of loan players in a squad ever? Madness

Hendersons comments are one in the eye for so called fans who have been having a go at him after they belived the now known false reports that he was asking too cash to sign for us! it seems it never got anywhere near wage disscusions as we now know Portsmouth never accepted our bids.Lets hope they all apologise. Still think Jewel and Clegg should go though.

It's a real shame that none of these players could be tied down in the summer but great signings in Campbell, Reo Coker, Higganbotham and Henderson. We now have the required depth to our squad, covered in most positions; we have a good range of young up and coming players who we own, and excellent players with premier league experience - the competition will only help our players grow; they must fight for their right to wear the Town shirt, and who knows what could happen in the January transfer window. We could be top 6 by then and our loan players may be putting in transfer requests to join us. But rather than be optimistic and have enthusiasm for the cause, I agree with the 90% chimp majority...lets all fling poo!

I said Loach was rubbish when we signed him but no, because he's a Town fan he was going to our best keeper ever. I still think that ALB is better than Loach, hopefully Henderson will be better than the both of them.

Madness. Complete madness.

Lets see if we can field an entire team of loaners.
It'll be the only record that this squad are likely to achieve.

My brother in law text me earlier and said he saw Paul Jewell hurtling down Portman Road at about 4.30 on a skateboard.

Lots on here are saying we need competition for places. We need competition for RB and LF before we need competition for that of Keeper.

Still don't have cover at RB and LB. Same situation as at the start of the season. OK plenty of midfielders!!

So Jewell's scouting system seems to be based around waiting around a fax or PC to see whose available on a short term loan?
Didn't Norwich go down to League 1 after running a team of mainly loan players?
Reading between the lines ME has refused to give Jewell money to buy players as maybe he doesn't trust he judgement anymore and is sanctioning loan players to give Jewell a short term vote of confidence. All in all its seems like a last throw of the dice for Jewell and it stinks of panic and desperation.
Lets hope it doesn't last too long........... this has gone on far too long.

Just imagine Mr Henderson plays on Saturday, Ipswich win and he has a blinder and saves two pens. Big Sam texts Clegg Saturday night and says Jaaskelainen has got a slight pull, Mr Henderson has gone. Thats why the whole setup is mental.

Henderson will start on Saturday which I think will be a bit harsh on Loach. Loach needs to command his area more but is a decent shot stopper. I think ALB will be on the bench.

The football club used have a soul and had a way of doing things that was the envy of most clubs, now it is just a painful joke.

Half of the team at least on Saturday are likely to be loan / short contract players who will are struggling for match fitness or rusty through lack of games.

Is it any wonder that we are second bottom when we keep building our foundations with quicksand.

It is a worry at this stage we are adding so many loanees! The beginning of the season PJ wanted to sign young and ambitious younster but we are no way forward! instead he is panic buying loanees because he is clueless as to what to do! if we carry on, he will take the club into league one oblivion and I fear it may take a few years to get out. So frustrating I have never come across such a crap period in ITFC history. Even Jo Royle gave hope with no money yet we have a manager currently with full financial support unable to get a team going.... I don't know what more to add apart from I am a very frustrated supporter who has supported the club since 1974 with Grandfather/Father/Cousins/Brothers and so on... COYB

I cannot understand this - what message does that say to Loach? Marcus Evans - You seriously need to consider this strategy of short term loans. Loan players are not loyal to Ipswich Town (even if you are paying their wages). In addition, if they do help us climb the table (which I hope they do) - you are back to the same squad that is 2nd from bottom in 3 months time.

We need permenant quality signings - not loan players who cannot get into another clubs squad.

Paul Jewell couldn't be bothered to turn up to welcome the players, however saw him sitting in KFC on Felixstowe Road with a Colonel's meal.
