Town Confirm McCarthy Manager
Thursday, 1st Nov 2012 09:10

Mick McCarthy has been confirmed as the new manager of Ipswich Town. The 53-year-old has signed a contract until the summer of 2015 and will be joined at Portman Road by his former Wolves assistant Terry Connor.

McCarthy said: “I’m obviously delighted to have been given the job as Ipswich Town manager and I’m looking forward to the challenge ahead.

“It’s a fantastic football club, with a proud tradition and history and a terrific fanbase.

“While the long-term ambition is to take the club back into the Premier League, it’s clear that the first priority is to get some confidence back into the team and start climbing the table.”

Blues chief executive Simon Clegg added: “I am delighted to welcome Mick and Terry to Portman Road.

“We are under no illusions of the challenge ahead for this club given our position in the table but we feel we have the right manager to lead that challenge.

“Mick has a wealth of knowledge in the game and has shown that he knows how to compete successfully in the Championship in his time at both Sunderland and Wolves.

“While the first task is to guide the club away from our current position, we believe Mick has all the credentials and drive to eventually bring success back to Ipswich Town.”

McCarthy has previously managed Millwall, Sunderland and Wolves at Championship level - taking the latter two clubs into the Premier League - and has an impressive record: Played 407 Won 185 Drew 115 Lost 107. His win rate at this level is 45.4%.

McCarthy and Clegg will hold a press conference at Portman Road at 5pm this evening which BBC Radio Suffolk is broadcasting live online.

I would love to see the look on the prima donas faces when they found out. If iwas chopra i would lump a load of money on him leaving town he might win for a change.

Welcome Mick, now kick arse! I'm afraid to say you've inherited a near whole team of bad attitudes.

If I was MM I would walk into the dressing room and say "right anyone not prepared to give their all for this club can F*** Off now" but that's just me!

Great news.
Hoping the change will make a difference but still worried that the "don't care attitude" is a result of Clegg & Evans leadership style and will remain under any manager.

Welcome Mick! Terrific news for this football club!

On a side note, I have a weird version of that 'Barbra Streisand' song going through my head, only the words 'Mick McCarthy' are replacing them... makes sense if you sing it...

For The first time since John Lyall im happy about the appointment. George Burley and Joe Royel both proved me wrong. Ive never stepped foot in Portman Road under Jewells reign thats how strong i felt. Big Mick always comes across as a decent honest guy. He always tells it like it is just for that hes got my backing. The next time i moan i hope its because i cant get a ticket because Portman Road is sold out. COYB.

I think that Mick McCarthy is the right man for the job at the present time. Had we been in a better position, then men like Di Canio, Tisdale Tarricco and the like, could have been considered. However, the truth is, we are not in that position and therefore I consider this to be wise appointment.

I am looking forward to the January transfer window. I am already wondering what little gems Mick may have in mind!!

Credit where its due - Well done Evans and Clegg for bringing Mick to our club, he's just sort of manager we need. Respected in the game, players will now want to come to our club. If we do go down, I believe Mick will take us back up. If we survive then I believe we can challenge the top six next season. In McCarthy we trust!

Time for us all to unite and get behind MM. Mick ......... please, please get rid of that awful Frank Sinatra song - we haven't won a game since that started up and it is soooo depressing. PS: Get rid of Jet, Chopra and Martin!!!

Welcome Mick.
The right appointment for our club at this time and has the pedigree to take us much further. I can live with any change of playing style as long as it generates excitement, pace and success!

Welcome to the club Mick.
Go in there and sort out who want to put the town shirt on with pride and sort out the over paid non tryers who dont care a less .
Some players will be shaking in their boots now we have a hard but fair manager and someone who will take charge .
I know you will do very well here and get us back in the premier league where we belong.
I think we are very lucky to have you here at the club us being bottom of the championship a team full of loan players and you being a premier league manager in my mind.
All the ipwich fans should now get behind Mick and let him do his job.
Roll on january and lets see some new permanent players at portman road.
Good luck Mick.
