McCarthy Knows Nothing of Contract Claims Saturday, 17th Nov 2012 06:01 Manager Mick McCarthy says he doesn’t know where claims that he has a get-out clause in his Town contract have come from.
Reports in Ireland earlier in the week claimed the two-and-a-half-year deal the Blues boss recently signed at Portman Road included a clause which would allow him to return to his old role as Republic of Ireland boss at the end of the season if the FAI wanted him without the Blues receiving any compensation.
Asked about the reports McCarthy said: “I don’t discuss my contract, so where those stories come from I don’t know.”
Prior to joining the Blues, there was speculation in the Irish press that McCarthy was being lined-up for a return to the position he held between 1996 and 2002, claims he dismissed at his first Town press conference: “There were all sorts of stories that I’ve been tapped up and I’ve spoken to them, but it was barefaced lies. Nothing in it at all.”
However, he subsequently admitted that he might be interested at some point in the future should the job become vacant, although while keen not to undermine current incumbent Giovanni Trapattoni, who is contracted until after the 2014 World Cup: “I’d go back, but when it’s right, when it’s available. I’m not trying to add pressure on to anybody else.”
In terms of Town, McCarthy says he’s enjoying life in Suffolk, although he’s currently still living in a hotel: “I’ve been here two weeks and we’ve had two away games. I’ve not really been able to go out and get myself a house and get settled in.
“I’ve had lovely feedback, from people in the hotel, people around the place. I’ve had a warm welcome.”

He will see his two and a half year contract out and get the Ireland job after that most likely.

Ive cut and pasted this from the other day so sorry to any one whos read it all ready but this is doing my head in! Take it from someone who reads the Irish newspapers, our manager will not be taking over the Republic job any time soon. The Irish FA do not have the money to change the current manager until his contract expires or even pay the sort of wage (or bonus) we are paying. Look at the facts, the country is bust, how do you think it would go down having to pay someone off with a few million Euro. Just relax and enjoy the fact we now have a man in position to sort our club out!

I'm glad you said that BigAlwasmyhero, people may disagree but I dont like hearing things about how the manager might want to manage another club in the future. Of course he has personal ambitions especially for your country but it makes me apprehensive, I want Mick to be glued to us seen as he only signed a few weeks ago, Mick has to have his heart in it or things will not work out. I suppose its the up front honesty that comes with McCarthy and so its something I will get used to.

It does seem a year has disappeared somewhere from previous reports. If he gets us promoted and leaves to manage Ireland good luck to him. If he doesn't achieve success here (and getting to the playoffs would be a huge success right now) I can't see him being in high demand. Perhaps slow progress is best but fast progress is more fun. I just hope and believe the club will be in a better state when he leaves than when he joined.

PhilTWTD can you please confirm the contract length. A number of us think it to be 3 and a half years, not 2 and a half?

@BigAl : It's good that you are very confident, but the one thing missing from the quotes above is a denial from Mick that there's any truth in the substance of the claim. All he said is that he doesn't talk about his contract so he doesn't know where this has come from. Not having to pay compensation might be very helpful if the Irish FA came looking.

@Len Brennan: my guess is that he has a policy of his own not to discuss his own contract, and if he started to confirm/deny individual aspects he would be drawn into other discussions about other terms in the contract at other times. We've had it rough for the last few years so we're all feeling a bit insecure, but lets not allow these paranoid thoughts take over from what is a really positive atmosphere around the place lately.

Fair enough Bohslegend, I appreciate the point you are making. The problem is though, that this is not paranoia, it is in response to reports that seem to have substance. I hope you're right though.
