McCarthy: Point Gained
Saturday, 24th Nov 2012 18:03

Town boss Mick McCarthy felt that ultimately the Blues’ 1-1 draw with Peterborough was a point gained rather than one lost with Posh having gone in front in the first half.

McCarthy said it could be seen as either points dropped or one gained: “You can see it both ways I guess. It’s a point won.

“I haven’t seen the goal we conceded yet to pick the bones out of it but it looked like another soft and milky goal.

“People just score against us too easily, but I won’t know the reasons why until I see it. We didn’t play well in the first half, we couldn’t pass it to our team-mates.

“But it was coming, the performance, towards the end of the first half we were getting better and thankfully we improved in the second half with a bit more intensity and I think we deserved the point certainly, that’s for sure.”

The Blues manager thought there was no argument with Mark Halsey’s decision to award the spotkick: “I thought it was a penalty, I thought it was a stonewall penalty, to be honest.

“He got him stood up and as he’s gone past him he’s clipped his foot. He may have gone down slowly but it was a penalty.”

He had no issue with the crowd’s reaction to the first half display: “I understand that they deserved to boo us off. We were pretty poor in the first half, I’ve no problem with that at all.

“In the second half I thought there was a response from everybody, from the players and from the crowd. We were getting better, we were starting to look better and goals, penalties, make everyone feel better.

“There were chances at both ends, the game became really stretched,” he added. “We were trying to win it and we were in danger losing it in trying to win it.

“Their keeper made a good save, Hendo made a good save from the shot. They broke on us a couple of times. DJ Campbell clips it with his studs and if he gets a bit more on it he scores. It wasn’t great, it was exciting.”

McCarthy says Nigel Reo-Coker is definitely out of the Nottingham Forest match: “He’s hurt his hamstring so there’s no chance of him playing on Tuesday. He might be out for two or three weeks.”

Posh boss Darren Ferguson said his side would have won if they scored a second goal: “I am disappointed that we didn’t get the three points. I think it was a lost opportunity.

“We just needed that second goal. That was our biggest frustration. If we get the second goal, I think we win the game.”

He had no argument with the penalty: “No, I don’t think so. I haven’t seen it again. Lee Tomlin doesn’t think it was, he felt it was soft, but one of my coaches sits in the stand and he thought it was a penalty. He’s given it, so it is.”

I thought we were disapointing today.

Was massively disapointed in Reo Coker, I see I am not the only one of that opinion on here, I think Hyam should be given a chance.

However I again thought Edwards and Martin played quite well and JET looked ok when he came on.

I would love to know how many times this season we have gone 1-0 down in the first 10 minutes of games. If we constantly find ourselves chasing games we wont get anywhere.

Theres also a question mark over who to play up front with Campbell if we keep going 442, will be interesting to see if he plays Barnett on Tuesday as Chopra was poor.

town on the up. how on earth was henderson in neway to blame for the goal. the guy was 1 on 1 with him. in that situation he would have needed a bit of luck to save that. was purely down to higginbotham, and possibly orr should have covered him. waltontownblue haze. no henderson didnt walk off as tho he didnt care. he was down about us being a goal down, plus i guess he was also upset that a few morons in the sbr stand had slagged him off when he gestured to the crowd to get behind the team. those fans imo should be ashamesd of themselves. apart from nething else it doesnt help the team.

First comment,I know people on here don't want Henderson in the team but some so called supporters absolutely hammered/abused him(no pun intended) every time he had the ball, bang out of order in my book,if he is in the team you should back him,how is anybody supposed to get confidence when he gets that! Disgusting! That's my rant out of the way,as for the game not great was it? If they've got any aspiration to get out of this they have got to show more going forward and stop conceding stupid goals.reo-Coker was pretty poor again, why is the guy still here,if he thinks he can still play in the prem he is seriously deluded! Not only him but no real stand outs today, can't help thinking this game shouldn't have slipped away.up next forest, need to up their game 200% as they aren't mugs who could batter us easily if they don't watch out!

Darren Ferguson saying if they'd got a second goal they'd have won. Oh yeah! Tell you what, if WE'd got a second goal, WE'd have won!
It's up there with 'I'm a firm believer that if you score one, the other team have got to score two to win!'

Loving the comments about Allan Hunter. For those of us that remember, probably the best centre half our club has ever had!

for those of you criticising chopra. no, he wasnt great, but he wasnt poor neither. hr did ok on the ball, when he got it, which wasnt often enough, the fact is that he needs to be playing up front alongside a big man, not another player of his own stature. for that system to work you either need either a midfielder who can split the defence with a pass to set him up or your wingers to get the ball in. our wide men didnt see enough of the ball for much of the time. once again today chopra was having to do his work outside the box. thats not where we need him. hes needed in the box getting on the end of knockdowns from a big striker as he did at cardiff alongside bothroyd. so give him a break. until we get him playing in that kind of partnership we'll not see the best of him

Best threat was from a wide men today - Edwards continues to be a cut above the rest, but have to say first time I've seen Reo-Coker and N'Daw and thought both of them were disappointing and surely this needs changing?!?
Defense still bad and what worries me now is not just the centre back positions but also the full backs, Cresswell now looks continually nervous and ORR although somewhat better second half looks to lack pace and made the odd mistake (one of which they nearly scored form down the right side).
Tuesday I would actually like to see SOME changes - Moshni start, Hyam Start at least please. Transfer window needs a few players leaving I'm afraid.

Good point ipswichbusiness but cant forget Kevin Beattie! We're all talking about how poor our defence is. How much would you have to pay now for - Cooper - Burley- Hunter- Beattie - Mills ?

Good posts from stowtractorboy and bluelady. orr was dreadful in the first half as gave ball away too much. I aldo noticed he seems he akways seems to be having a pop at his own team mates. Time for hewitt to be given a chance. Reo cocker awful until he limped off. Most others just average at best. Chopra was as crap in 442 as he has been in 451 but why on earth did DJ come off. Henderson made a couple of good saves but where are the goals coming from when DJ isn't on the pitch ? JET made a difference and ndaw put in a shift

Bigalwasmy hero; I think that Beattie was the better footballer, but he was injured so often. Allan Hunter had an excellent "attendance record" by comparison. Also, I suspect that Beattie was made to look good by having Hunter beside him. As for the defence you mention, as fatcatevans has pointed out it would be hugely expensive, but we are living in different times.

It was Bobby Bell we despatched to Blackburn in part exchange for Big Al. Within a few weeks he'd moved on to Palace and then later Norwich. Hunter and Beattie were the best central defensive partnership the world has seen, bar none.

blues1: I agree with your asessment of Chopra. He was playing behind DJ in more of an advanced midfield role rather than an out and out strikers role and I thought he did quite well. He worked hard, went to get the ball on a number of occasions, took on players a few times, chased players down and also put in a few tackles!

For all the critics of Chopra, I accept that he didn't have any goal scoring opportunities but frankly nor did DJ who playing in the more advanced strikers role. With our woeful first half performance it's little wonder that both Chopra and DJ didn't get a sniff of a goal scoring opportunity!

Just wanted to add a little balance to the criticism!

(And I agree with most that Reo-Coker had yet another shocker - thank christ he's injured for a few weeks!)

Memories of Hunter and Beattie brought a smile to my face after today's dysmal performance. Both were outstanding centre halfs in their own right; Big Al a no nonsense, take no prisoners stalwark with the Diamond Beattie having the ability to take the ball from his own penalty area to the opposition's penalty area. And who can forget Big Al walking out for the second half of a game stubbing out his half time fag just before he went onto the pitch! Memories .....

This was two points lost. We needed to win this game but made a meal out of getting a draw against Peterborough. At home. No disrespect to Peterborough - as I know football doesn't work this way - but they are bottom for a reason and on paper this game should be the most likely home win we'll get all season.

Today's game was borderline depressing in the first half. The team was lethargic, disjointed and sloppy. There is very little quality in this team. No spark, no creation, no resolve. To me the only players worthy of praise today were Edwards and Martin down the flanks, who worked tirelessly even if they lacked end product for the most part. DJ Campbell also looks dangerous and I'm not sure why he was taken off. That aside the whole back-line is dreadful and inspires little confidence. Then you have Henderson behind, probably the worst 'keeper I've seen in a Town shirt (get rid asap).

Mick has a hell of a job on his hands.

It also saddened me that we couldn't agree terms with George Boyd in the summer. He is Peterborough's stand-out player in my opinion. Good on the ball and knows how to find space for himself when off it.

Hyam has to be first player on the team sheet in relation to rebuilding our team, MM all town fans know it, he is a true blue. We looked sharper when he came on. Orr started playing after we scored, very poor first half. For me some experienced players bottled it first half, DJ may well keep us up with his goals, Loach I think is not the greatest keeper but he is a blue and we need that right now, Henderson a liability and crowd on his back all game will not change that.

Under the current cirumstances this was a point gained. I got slated earlier in the week for saying this wasn't a must win game, these only happen come Feb. On the bright side we are closer to Sheff Wed and Barnsley with the point.

MM has got to nurse this lot till Jan and we need to get 4-6 points in every 12. Not withstanding the amount of goals we have shipped we now are in desperate need of some decent strikers. The lack of goals is criipling us and without DJ we are likely to go down. Big M knows this and I am sure we will see action to rectify in Jan - until then it aint going to be pretty!

You are joking I hope. Beattie was one of the best players - if not the best -Town has ever had. I don't think you could ever have seen Beattie play for England [without Big Al to make him look good as you suggest] - otherwise you would realise just how far out your comment is.
As for today's game, well, same old same old. But I really feel so much more confident of survival with MM than at any time since Jim Magilton.
I can't get to the AGM this next week unfortunately due to prior commitments, but I'd love to have gone just to listen to Simon Clegg. He must have 'something' going for him surely? I just haven't seen it yet.
