Campbell Set to Go Back to QPR But McCarthy Hoping He'll Return Monday, 31st Dec 2012 14:41
Striker DJ Campbell will play the last game of his loan spell with the Blues against Brighton tomorrow but with manager Mick McCarthy hopeful that the 31-year-old QPR striker will return to Portman Road. The Town boss says the frontman is keen to join the Blues permanently with a fee having been discussed with the Premier League club and a contract offered to the player’s agent.
McCarthy says Campbell, whose spell ends on Saturday, will return to QPR at least for the short term: “I’ve spoken to Harry and what he will do is he’ll go back first, this will be his last game because whether we’d got permission to play him in the cup or not I wasn’t going to play him.
“He’ll go back and then we’ll see what happens after that. I think Harry in his position will justifiably want to have a look at him.
“That was always the case, he was going to go back and we are trying to do a deal to keep him. Hopefully we can, fingers crossed. We’ll see.”
He says personal terms have already been discussed: “We’re speaking to his agent and I’ve spoken to DJ and we’ve offered him a permanent deal effectively — there’s a permanent deal there for him if that’s what he wants to do.
“But it’s not only him, it’s agreeing with the club. Ts and Cs, terms and conditions for everybody. I haven’t spoken about terms, I don’t get into that, it’s down to the club to decide that, down to Marcus and Simon to discuss that.
“I’d advise and prompt and probe and suggest what we do to what level, but I think we’re capable of getting a deal with him. I hope so anyway.”
McCarthy, who confirmed that a fee has been discussed between the clubs, says Town’s 10-goal top scorer wants to remain at the club: “DJ wants to stay. He wouldn’t want to be playing for QPR because he’s not been playing for them and the way things were with him.
“I’ve never asked him that question, but I guess if he was to go back and Harry stuck him in the team and he played well and he scored and he’s happy, he’d want to stay there. And why wouldn’t he, playing in the Premier League?
“If that’s not the case, then he loves it here and he’s be happy to stay provided we could do a deal with him and his agent, and with QPR, for him to stay. There’s a lot there to be dealt with.”
Campbell is set to rejoin his parent club in time for training on Thursday morning and could play in their FA Cup third round tie with West Brom on Saturday.

Will certainly leave a void if he doesn't return, I don't think he'll break the bank in terms of signing him or wages so it's a no brainer for me. Get him on a 2 1/2 year contract.
He deserves our appreciation for his unstinting efforts whilst here, and what better way than from the terraces tomorrow. Hope and expect a crowd of some 20k. Last few transfer windows very frustrating lets see if its any different this time, probably will depend on how much CEO is involved.
Redknapp Jnr may valid comments yesterday on Sky saying that in their current position the players which Harry would normally go for may fight shy due to the possibility of Championship football next year. Plus they would want high salaries and relegation clauses. So I regret I can see DJ going back, being used to help keep them up and then being dumped again when Harry can attract the bigger names/.
mrivancampo what a muppet u are.....scored some goals we'd be stuffed without those 10 goals, he has impressed no-end although so have several others since Mick's been with us. Another win tomorrow and who know's play-offs are more realistic than relegation...
It would be a massive loss if DJC did not return to us but if QPR have any sense they will keep hold of him as he has proved he can score for fun in the championship and that is exactly where QPR will be next season.
3 more points tomorrow will be one hell of a great way to start 2013.
I can only echo the general sentiments of others on here concerning this situation ... very concerned that the muppet Clegg may be left to handle the details of any would-be permanent transfer .... but if this is to be the last we see of DJ in an Ipswich shirt that a VERY BIG THANK YOU FOR YOUR EFFORTS DJ - and best best wishes for the remainder of your career wherever it might be! Good luck fella.
Would love DJ to stay, but if not, the team will have to bring Chops up to speed, He's kept his head down, sat on the bench, no moaning (none that we know of) just waiting he's chance. If he can find he's scoring boots and quickly, whos knows?
At the end of the day its thePLAYER that has the final say so come on DJ lets see how much you care about us, if not there are plenty of youger strikers out there COYB
I think things are pretty positive with this- DJ wants to come back; Harry is speaking of buying in Jan and looking forward to Zamora being fit again; ME has promised MM funds and obviously MM wants DJ on his shopping list. Only question is whether Harry fancies DJ for his 25 man squad...can't see it if he has other signings in mind. Just remembered ME and Harry are mates- deal done then no problem!
Whatever happens Edmunds5 is right that DJ has been a top pro and we should thank him for that. I hope we can get him but if not Mick will sort this out.
It is possible, as i have stated before, that Chopra could get a prison sentence in Jan and hence two strikers should be on the shopping list!
I believe we hve a gd chance in getting dj back for gd. Red knapp will get at least one high profile striker in jan for sure. He is out of contract in the summer and he wnt want to sit on the bench now he has found top form with a club that fits he will be leaving qpr. My biggest fear is another champ club comes knocking. Saying that palace hve Murray and Bolton are too far north. He feels the love from us and he's the man. Mick has got the best out of him and their relationship will play a big part in this too. If pj was here is say we wd hve little chance but the whole club is different now. Henderson kept saying he wanted to play for west ham but now is open to signing permanently. Wot an effect mick has had. I wasn't sure about mm but by god am I glad we got him. If tomorrow is dj's we must sing our hearts out for him and what he has dne since he has been here! Feel the love dj and please sign on the line ASAP! Thanks for everything
