Murphy Town's New Man on the Spot
Tuesday, 1st Jan 2013 06:05

Daryl Murphy has revealed he is Ipswich’s new penalty-taker following strike partner DJ Campbell’s miss from the spot at Charlton on Boxing Day.

That was the on-loan QPR star’s second failure for Town and following a chat between the pair Murphy has landed the role in which he boasts a 100 per cent record so far.

Murphy said: “I think it’s six out of six — three for Celtic and three, maybe even four, for Sunderland. I haven’t taken one for Ipswich yet because I’ve not really had a chance.

“When Grant [Leadbitter] was here he was on penalties and when he was taken off them I wasn’t playing so Lee Martin was taking them. When DJ came in at first I wasn’t playing but if we get one against Brighton, and I’m in the side, I will be taking it.

“DJ and I had a word the other day. I said ‘That’s it, you’ve had your chance’ and he said ‘Yes, fair enough’. So I’m on them now.”

Murphy’s perfect record speaks for itself but the Celtic loanee knows all about the pressure attached to the role.

He added: “Clearly there’s a bit of pressure in taking a penalty but as a player you should also be confident about taking one. The odds are in your favour.

“At Celtic we had a thing where as soon as you missed one you were off them, simple as that.

“Here at Ipswich we do quite a bit of practice in training. It is good for the goalkeepers as well but our keepers tend to read it better because they are facing you regularly.

“It is different for the others because they don’t know your style and where you are going to go.”
