Edwards Would Love Cup Run
Friday, 4th Jan 2013 06:05

Some players may be happy to admit the FA Cup is of little relevance to them but Ipswich captain Carlos Edwards is not one of them.

Edwards has happy childhood memories of watching action from the competition and is frustrated that he has yet to make an impact in it.

He said: “I would love to have a run in the FA Cup because it is one of the things that I have not been able to achieve in my career.

“Obviously, we had the run to the semi-final of the Carling Cup a couple of seasons ago but I haven’t been very far in the FA Cup.

“When I was at Luton we played Liverpool at Kenilworth Road in the third round about seven years ago. We were leading 2-1 at half-time and made it 3-1 early in the second half but we eventually lost 5-3.

“You often get games like that in the FA Cup but if I’m honest I have not made much impact in the competition over the years. Maybe this time.”

Edwards believes every player should be firmly focused on Saturday’s tie and looking to advance as far as possible along the route to Wembley.

He added: “It’s a prestigious competition shown all around the world and I would chew someone’s hand off any day of the week to play in it.

“Most countries around the world take an interest in it and as a player, if you are not interested in the FA Cup, I don’t think you should be playing football at all.

“I’m just hoping the lads are really up for it and not just taking it as any old cup game because we can go on a nice little run. You never know, a victory on Saturday and it could kick-start the second half of our season.

“I used to watch the FA Cup on television when I was a kid in the 80s. They would tend to focus on all the big teams and you wouldn’t see much of the lower league teams but it was always a glamour competition for everyone.”
