Andy Drury has no complaints with Town boss Mick McCarthy, even if the midfielder has spent more time than he would have liked on the bench this season.

Despite the disappointment of only starting 19 games — just 10 out of 26 since McCarthy took charge in November — the player has delivered a tremendous endorsement of the ex-Wolves manager.

Drury said: “I think the gaffer likes to stick with the team as long as it is doing well. There’s not a lot you can do — I mean you can’t keep banging on his door every week can you?

“Luke [Hyam] has come in and to be fair to him he’s been a bit unlucky since I’ve been at the club over the last couple of years. He fully deserves his chance and I think he’s a great player so fair play to him.

“The gaffer’s door is literally always open but I can’t moan about anything because the boys have been doing well and it’s just been a case of waiting for my chance.

“I don’t think I can say a bad word about the manager to be honest with you. He’s approachable and he’s honest — if he thinks you’re playing rubbish he will tell you that!

“But you also know that if he sticks you in the team and you do well he will keep you in there. Fingers crossed, I’ll be playing against Leeds on Saturday.”

Drury confirmed that McCarthy expects his players to be disciplined and hard-working, adding: “That’s something I always try to do. But it’s also in my nature to get the ball down and pass it.

“Freekicks used to be a big part of my game but there are a lot of players here who are the same so I don’t always get involved as much as I did earlier in my career.”
