Blues Linked With Hull Winger
Thursday, 18th Jul 2013 20:43

Town, Blackpool and Charlton are all reported to be showing interest in transfer-listed Hull City winger Cameron Stewart. The 22-year-old, along with former Blues loanee Aaron Mclean, has been made available for transfer by the Tigers despite having a year remaining on his contract.

Speaking last weekend, Hull boss Steve Bruce said: "I do think it's important that they go and play somewhere, but at the moment we haven't had any offers as such.

"I'm sure they'd both want to play more football this season, but that's not something I can guarantee here."

Stewart began his career with hometown club Manchester United during which time he spent spells on loan at Yeovil and Hull before moving to the KC Stadium on a permanent basis in January 2011. Last season most of his appearances came while out on loan at Burnley and Blackburn.

Hull are said to be willing to allow him to leave for a relatively small fee with his future reportedly set to be sorted over the weekend.

While another winger doesn’t appear to be amongst Town’s priorities at present with Paul Anderson signed from Bristol City and Jack Doherty close to a switch from Waterford United, however, Mick McCarthy does like to have strength in depth and competition in all areas of the squad.

Last summer, Wolves were linked with Stewart, after McCarthy had left Molineux but while Terry Connor and scouts Dave Bowman and Ian Evans were still at the now-League One club.

Elsewhere, Doherty, 18, was left out of Waterford's squad for a friendly with a Manchester United XI this evening.

Meanwhile, the Blues are reported to have been eyeing a season-long loan move for United’s 21-year-old Belgian right-back Marnick Vermijl.

Vermijl was in the United reserves side which beat Club Brugge 1-0 on Monday, a game watched by Blues manager Mick McCarthy. Centre-half Scott Wootton was previously understood to have been the player being watched by the Town manager.

Having been a youth player with Bocholt VV and Standard Liège back in his home country, Vermijl joined United’s academy in 2010.

The Belgian U21 international’s only senior appearance for the Red Devils came in last season’s Capital One Cup tie against Newcastle.

While Vermijl may have been viewed as a potential target, as revealed earlier, the Blues were in the process of completing the signing of his former team-mate Frederic Veseli this afternoon, a switch which now looks likely to be confirmed on Friday.

With Elliott Hewitt already in the squad, Town now wouldn’t appear to be in the hunt for another right-back.
