Smith in Friendly Action With All Whites
Tuesday, 15th Oct 2013 10:06

Blues defender Tommy Smith will win his 25th New Zealand cap tonight when the All Whites face Trinidad and Tobago in a friendly in Port of Spain.

Smith is expected to be part of a full strength New Zealand side having recovered from the minor injury which saw him come off during Saturday’s game against MLS side Chivas USA during their training camp in California.

The friendly and camp are part of the All Whites’ preparations for next month’s two-legged World Cup 2014 play-off against the fourth-placed side in the CONCACAF qualifying group, which looks likely to be Mexico. The final qualifiers take place tonight.

Town right-back Elliott Hewitt is the other member of the senior squad who could be in action today. The 19-year-old will win his ninth cap if he is involved in this evening’s Euro 1015 qualifier against San Marino at the Book People Stadium in Bangor.

Hewitt was an unused sub in Friday’s 2-0 victory over Lithuania, who take on England at Portman Road this evening.

Surely we shouldn't be releasing Tommy Smith for a friendly when we have an important league match 4 days later. Not just the chance of injury but the exhausting travel.
