Town Confirm Williams Loan Signing
Thursday, 27th Feb 2014 16:53

Town have confirmed the signing of Crystal Palace midfielder Jonny Williams on loan until the end of March.

Williams, 20, trained with the Blues squad at Playford Road this morning and will go straight into the squad for Saturday’s home game against Birmingham.

The Wales international, who scored for Palace’s U21s in their 2-1 victory over Town on Monday, will wear the number 25 shirt.

He told the club site he was surprised to be back in Suffolk so soon after Monday's match: “I didn’t expect to be back here so quickly after playing at Ipswich on Monday but I’m really looking forward to my time here.

“[Palace manager] Tony Pulis told me I would be going out on loan after the game against Manchester United last weekend and I think there were two or three clubs interested.

“I spoke to Mick McCarthy after the game on Monday though, and he told me Ipswich were interested and where he sees me playing in the team. He talked about his ambitions and I was excited about the challenge of coming here.

“I know what a great club Ipswich is. I know they have been in the top flight and I know that’s where they want to get back to.”

Born in Kent, 5ft 6in tall Williams came through the youth system at Selhurst Park and made his senior debut in August 2011.

Since then he has gone on to make 27 starts and 37 sub appearances, scoring one goal, but has not started a Premier League game since the Eagles' promotion last summer. In September he suffered an ankle injury which sidelined him for two months.

Highly-rated Williams, who recently signed a new contract with Palace until the summer of 2018, was a constant threat on the left of midfield on Monday and can also operate in the centre and on the right.

Qualifying via his father, Williams has won four full Wales caps having previously played at U17, U19 and U21 levels.

In addition to Town, who are understood to be paying 100 per cent of his wages while he is at Portman Road, Charlton and an unnamed third Championship club were chasing the midfielder.

Good creative midfielder - what we need. I just hope he's less awkward on the pitch than he looks here!

Afternoon chaps, Palace fan here. Great signing for you, he's only small but he has an electric turn of pace, gets stuck in to some crunching tackles and is a natural runner with the ball. Unfortunately he had a couple of nasty injuries, both picked up playing for Wales but if you keep him fit you'll see why he's a fan favourite. I saw someone picked hp on how awkward her looks in the photo, he's a shy lad, a model professional and does his talking on the pitch. Good luck to you & Joniesta, I wish you all a great season.

I agree, I saw him play against our U21's and he did stand out. The only problem is he will not ever be ours as I understand it. We need to sign someone like this player and own him. I had hoped we had got away from last season's, develop the loan players for their parent club.

I've tried very hard to summon an opinion on this and I just can't. Our transfer policy has literally bored me into submission.

Lucky to get him , with no money MM has done well in attracting some players here - Wickham is way out of our price bracket - when will people realise we HAVE NO MONEY - Keane and Jewell saw to that , which is why what MM has done on NO money is impressive
If he had money like at Wolves , those that bother to want to look - he played some great attacking football with Kightly and Jarvis , SEB etc
He is building and if we finish top 10 very good season
Welcome Jonny and I hope you have a great stay - 7 games - so a big month ahead - gonna need all the players we can - Jack Marriott would be my only other request
