Hungarian Striker at Town
Monday, 21st Jul 2014 12:23

Borussia Dortmund B striker Bálint Bajner will be at Town today, hoping to win a deal with the Blues.

According to the Daily Mirror, the free agent 23-year-old Hungarian is keen to break into English football and will join Town if he impressed boss Mick McCarthy in what's likely to be a week's trial.

Szombathely-born Bajner played youth football with hometown club Haladás and then FC Sopron in Austria, where he first broke through into senior football.

He joined Romanian club Liberty Oradea in 2007, moving to West Ham on loan for the 2008/09 season, where he featured for their U18s and reserves. However, the Hammers opted not to take up an option to sign the 6ft 5in tall frontman on a permanent basis the following summer.

Bajner, who has been capped by Hungary at U19 level, joined Honved back in Hungary in 2009, then moved on to Italian lower division side ASD Sulmona Calcio in 2011.

After a short spell at Hungarian club Bodajk FC Siófok he joined Dortmund in the summer of 2012.

His one substitute appearance for their first team came last season with the rest of his football having been played with their B team in the third tier of German football. While with Dortmund B he scored nine goals and recorded five assists in 52 games.

Mauritian international midfielder Kévin Bru is also at Town this week and the duo are unlikely to be the only trialists due at Playford Road with clubs running the rule over numerous hopefuls at this time of year.

Meanwhile, Town are again reported to be in talks with central defender Christophe Berra regarding a new contract. Speaking last week, manager Mick McCarthy said Town would look at offering new deals to current players once he had added more new recruits to his squad.

Elsewhere, former Blues loan keeper Stephen Henderson’s switch to Charlton has been confirmed. The Irishman has signed a three-year deal following his exit from West Ham by mutual consent.

Intriguing signing. I'd even question if we need a new striker, with Didzy and Murphy to lead the line, Mick continuing to back Nouble, and Marriott waiting in the wings, but hey, who doesn't get excited by an unkown, obscure signing? He might be brilliant.

I remember the days when fans used to criticise Town's scouts for not making greater inroads to find talent in continental Europe. We get reports of two such players coming in on trial and suddenly folks are complaining that they aren't 20 goal strikers from Real Madrid's reserves.

No. These two may not be good enough. They may be little more than Veliche Shumulikoskis or, heaven forbid, Vemund Brekke-Skards. But never discount the possibility that there's a very talented young player plying his trade with a little known club that just needs the right development and the right group of professionals around him to flourish.

amazing!...how a video highlights appears out of no where of a player from the reserve squad of Borussia Dortmund and clubs nobodies heard of.
Lets be honest here nobody knows anything of this player. Agree with Michael11 a bit of a gamble if he impresses in training.

Can't believe some lower Premier League club isn't interested IF he has any potential. Having said that we got Cresswell from Tranmere under the noses of bigger clubs nearby so who knows - it costs nothing for MM & TC to bring him over and to have a look so why not.

A complete lack of perspective again from those thinking we should be in the race for Drogba.

To answer you Smithy '9 goals in 52 German 3rd division games, he'll have to improve on that'.

I give you 24 year old Jon Walters, signed from League Two Chester where he had hit 9 in 26 games (in League Two and the Conference I believe). A better strike rate yes but arguably a lower standard. So room to suggest similar scoring prowess and a similar age.

We all know that he went on to to have some exceptional seasons at this level and good ones in the Premier League.

If he adds another dimension, costs nothing and more importantly impresses MM and TC enough to get a deal then there's nothing to argue about at all.

9 goals in 52 games?! That's a poor record. Better than Nouble, but still poor. Still think we need to sign a goal scoring midfielder and a striker who scores goals. This guy doesn't have that good of record.
