McCarthy Annoyed to Concede Late Penalty
Saturday, 2nd Aug 2014 17:45

Town boss Mick McCarthy gave his players an ear-bashing for conceding the late penalty which led to Leyton Orient’s equaliser in the 1-1 friendly draw at Brisbane Road. Alex Henshall tripped ex-Blue Kevin Lisbie with Town having taken the lead in the ninth minute through Balin Bajner.

“I thought we got slapped in the first half but were 1-0 and I don’t know how. Well, I do know, it was because we defended all right for the most part and Gerks made a great save,” McCarthy said.

“In the second half I thought we were much better and we were the better team, their keeper made a good save and then we got milky, sloppy and just rubbish in the last minute.

“It’s cost us a goal and I don’t like it. There were seven or eight mistakes, we should have thrown it in the corner, we should have kept it, we were winning.

“I’m not bothered whether it’s a pre-season friendly or not. If we did that at Leeds or somewhere away from home one Tuesday night when we’re winning 1-0, I’m going to be killing somebody in the dressing room for those mistakes. We might as well learn now and they’ve just had it in their earhole because of it.”

The Town boss was pleased to see new signing Bajner net his second goal in two games, but says there’s more to come from the Hungarian.

“I think he was knackered, to be honest,” McCarthy continued. “He’s worked hard, he’s had a long week, he’s not had a full pre-season. I don’t think we saw the best of him in terms of his overall play but he scored. It’s a nice habit.”

David McGoldrick came on at half-time before being rested late on and the Town manager is delighted to see last season’s top scorer back in action: “Didz is great. It was lovely to have him back on. He helps us play.

“We persevered playing it up to the front two in the first half and it was horrible. In the second half, after we’d had words, we played on the inside with Skusey and Luke Hyam and tried to play it to the frontmen. It was a much better performance and Didz does that better than anyone.”

Tommy Smith and Paul Anderson missed out with minor niggles, while Jonny Parr was subbed just before half-time: “They’ve got a groin and a tight hamstring but should be fine for next week,” McCarthy added.

“Jonny Parr has got a sore groin. I don’t know if he’s a doubt for next week yet, you don’t know when they’ve just come off, he’ll have to be assessed tomorrow. We’ve had no injuries and we just seem to be picking them up now.”

Overall, McCarthy is pleased with the way pre-season has gone, although frustrated by those three joining Stephen Hunt — who has missed all six games with a calf problem — in picking up niggles.

“I was a lot happier last week when I had no injuries but now I’ve got Tommy Smith, Paul Anderson and Jonny Parr with little knocks, which is disappointing.

“But it’s gone all right. We should have seen that game out, it was just a rubbish penalty,” he added ruefully.

TimmyH: I'm afraid you cannot rule out what blues1 is saying. Money does go to theose places, and that is a well known fact. People do need to realise that we are a small club, and don't have money. Face facts: Evans bought our debt accrued up to when we had our money troubles 2002/03 season. That debt has gone up. This means we have to be frugal however painful it is. If I was overdrawn by tens of thousands and was down because my neighbour bought a Jag, went to the bank to borrow more to get the same Jag I would be shown to the street. Before going to buy a copy of Autotrader.

And, please don't say "end of". This is a forum. There is no end to discussion.

@jimmy - there are many clubs in debt and more than us i.e. Leicester, QPR (Last season), Bolton, Cardiff, Boro etc. (though this does not make it just) just 5 years ago ME was 'splashing the cash' regardlessly not just on players but on a hopeless manager Roy Keane and we don't know how much he was paid. FFP has come in the last season or so and we're abiding by it but sadly a few other clubs aren't. I agree to your point the debt IS massive and we have to be frugal but it now just appears we sell our best players for nothing in return but for players wages, signing on fees etc. - in this respect the chances of us getting promoted are VERY minimal. Not ruling out what blues1 said but he knew what jas was saying.

By the way I don't think you can compare buying a jag and being in debt with a millionaire owner of a football club although he is largely in it for his 'business interests' or how would that explain the massive debts of Premiership teams such as Chelsea, Villa, Utd etc.?...carry on :)

Cloddyseedbed - so you would rather see Ipswich draw 3-3 than win 1-0? You aren't an actual fan then, are you?

So would everyone who's complaining that we aren't paying transfer fees have been happier if we bought the same players last year when they were in contract and paid a fee on top? Wanting to pay a fee is a stupid argument!

Good reply Timmy. Plus mark from me, Sound like the kind of chap I could argue happily with over a few pints for hours!

I have to say I am sceptical about the FFP, and wait to see if clubs really follow it. I don't understand how we seem to be more frugal than some of these clubs, although maybe those Championship clubs you list may have bigger gates/turnover/assets? That's the only thing I can think of. I hope we are not in a minority of abiding by it, unless wee benefit by other clubs getting punished of course!

Certainly I think ME had his fingers burnt over transfer fees by Magilton, Jewell, Keane, whether the players bought were c3ck or just left on Bosmans. But I can understand why he might avoid transfer fees for that reason.

I presume fat boy Tim from the tone of your post that you would not condone transfer fees being paid by Ipswich town now or in the future,
You will no doubt be aware that last season only Jack Doherty attracted a transfer fee of some £20,000;and last week he went on afree to Limerick.
Excluding the two years in administration when poor old Joe couldnt spend a penny, this is the lowest sum paid out by the club since 1982/83 when nothing appeared to have gone out in transfer fees.
Thats over 30 years ago.I realise a lot has changed since then including admission fees, wages etc;but I think you saying that wanting to pay a fee is a stupid argument is a bit strong!
It will be interesting to see the figures provided to the shareholders in the Autumn for the financial year just ended.

seaside. no1 is saying they wouldn't like us to pay transfer fees for a player. it is exciting for fans to hear that such and such a player has signed for your club for x amount of pounds. the point tim is making is that , for instance, had we signed Cameron stewart last season when we would have had to pay a fee for him, would that have made him a better player than he is, us having signed him on a bosman. and clearly, the answer is no. and that is the point myself and others make to those of you who think to get a good player you have to pay a transfer fee to a club.

Luka, yes to your answer! I am a fan and I'm pretty sure I've been one longer than you and I go to support my team and want to be entertained 1st and foremost. Why have the crowds gone down?

Luka added 17:13 - Aug 3
Why? Ask Paul Jewell, Roy Keane, or those who would rather see us near the bottom, but playing passing football

We didn't play entertaining football under Keane or Jewell, despite spending big either did we. I am not a fan of negative football tactics and I never will be. People are not renewing their season tickets around me for that reason. If you are easily satisfied that's fine by me.

cloddyseedbed. I agree that we're not paying entertaining football, and I don't like the brand of football we're playing at all. but while mm is manager, im afraid that's what we'll get. but whether I enjoy watching it or not, I will always get my season ticket and go and watch the games, as that's what fans do. seems odd that youre saying people aren't renewing their season tickets, when actually season ticket sales are already up last season.

Some of our squad still haven't learned they need to play until the final whistle... Wakey Wakey

blues!. I have a friend who as not renewed his box. 5 people around me have not renewed and we only have the clubs word that season ticket sales are up. You can believe it - I don't. Like you I'll always get my season ticket and watch the game as that's what fans do. I'll also try and stay awake.

Blues1. I think we both must be mad or sad then if we both renew our season tickets whether we enjoy watching it or not. We must be true blues!! Long suffering but ever optimistic. :)

I don't care if MM spends money on transfer fees or not, as long as the players he brings in are good enough. Id rather MM bring in more players like McGoldrick and Berra than spends loads of money on a player like Chopra! We've brought in a good number of players on a free and they are could be a success so give them a chance, if it fails it's not a waste of a few million like we've had in the past with big money signings

cloddyseed. yer, youre right. we must be masochists or something. but its what you do as a fan. as some1 who has been through the robson era(what a great time that was), to the john Duncan era(how poor was that)? then having to endure administration, followed by keane and jewell, im grateful that at least we now look capable of competing at the right end of the table, even tho the football is so negative and boring. but then, id still be there if we were to end up in the conference

Cloddyseedbed added 12:38 - Aug 4
blues1, we have both witnessed the same era's then, from Robson till now. The good, the bad and now the ugly! Here's to hopefully being entertained and having a good season. I too would still be a season ticket holder in the conference league, lets hope it doesn't come to that though! :)
