Goals, or rather the lack of them, will inspire Town new Conor Sammon to give his all during his season-long loan switch from Derby.

Sammon, who launched his Ipswich career as a substitute in the 1-0 defeat at Reading on Saturday, is desperate to start hitting the target on a regular basis.

He netted 25 times for Scottish club Kilmarnock, which led to then Wigan boss Roberto Martinez forking out £600,000 to take him south of the border in January 2011.

Despite the Dubliner only scoring once for the Latics in 34 appearances — just 10 of them starts — when he switched to Derby in August the following year his value had doubled and the Rams handed over a cheque for £1.2 million.

His goal tally for the Rams is currently 13, four of them coming last season when he spent virtually all his time on the bench, and he admitted: “As a striker, scoring goals is what you are judged on and that’s how I judge myself as well.

“I’m ambitious and I want to score goals in every game I play. I’m disappointed if I’ve not scored and last season was a disappointment, but it makes me even hungrier and I’ll be trying even harder to go out and hit the ground running here at Ipswich. Who knows how many goals I can get?”

Asked to describe his style of play, Sammon added: “I’m a kind of tall, physical guy to look at but I’m comfortable on the ball. I really enjoy running in behind the defenders and playing on the shoulder.

“I’ll give it 100 per cent every week, I’ll work hard for the team and I’ll sacrifice myself at times if I need to come back and defend from the front. Ultimately I want to get back scoring goals.

“That’s my goal, my ambition — to come here and score goals to help the team do well and then see where that takes us and me.”

Sammon could make his home debut in Saturday’s East Anglian derby and he said: “There could be no better way to introduce myself to the home fans than to score in a fierce derby like that.

“A few of the lads have told me a little bit about it so, yes, it’s the kind of occasion that you really look forward to even more than any other normal game.

“Fans will be passionate and it will be a great way for me to start my Ipswich career at Portman Road.”
