Town Draw Southampton in FA Cup
Monday, 8th Dec 2014 19:17

Town have drawn Premier League Southampton away in the third round of the FA Cup.

The teams last met at the same stage of the competition back in Town's 1999/00 promotion season when the Saints won 1-0 at Portman Road with Dean Richards netting the goal.

More recently, they faced one another in the fourth round in 2009/10 when Wayne Thomas and Michail Antonio netted for the Saints - who are currently fourth in the top flight - and Pablo Couñago scored in the final minute for the Blues.

Previously, the Blues were at the Dell for a third round tie in 1990/91 when the home side ran out 3-2 victors.

Blues striker David McGoldrick and keeper Bartosz Bialkowski will be facing their old club, while Tyrone Mings was with their academy as a schoolboy and keeper-coach Malcolm Webster is another former St Mary's employee.

Southampton may prefer the game to be played on Sunday 4th or Monday 5th January as they are facing Arsenal in a home game on the Thursday.

OK, here's my line-up for this game:

Supple, Krause, Collins, Casement, Synnott; Craig, Lordan, Trotter, Moore, Haynes, Knights.

I'll be hoping for some magic from Upson off the bench. Oh, and confident enough to lend them McGoldrick for this one...

I was also at the 7-0 game played, unusually, on a Saturday night. It was the year Southampton were relegated with Mcmenemy as manager. 1973-74? It was certainly years before Alan Brazil played!

No reason why we cannot have more than a good run in the FA Cup.... aim high and win it I say.......

Saints reserves - winnable but do we want a cup run or not
Saints 1st 11 - out, and with that fixture list will they be more interested in the league and Europe, and rest players.

Have just watched Southampton vs Man Utd and if town turn up and want it I think we can beat them. They are on the slide, they won't want to risk their main players and if we get at them Murphy can score against anyone.
On the other hand I'm still not sure we should risk our players getting hurt...........
It's a hard one for MM & TC to decide.

We haven't been overly impressive in cup competitions of recent years even under Mick...not expecting to go through but no reason why we can't give them a good game and maybe even a draw, they weren't overly brilliant tonight against Man United whom again played fairly average.

I don't see why people are so downbeat about this draw. It's a great opportunity to test ourselves against a premier league club who weren't too long ago in the same position as we are now. They play a nice passing game and will be a great experience for the players who play. To add it is also nice to have a cup tie where there is no pressure on ourselves! Great tie in my opinion.

It will have to depend on how we do over the xmas period. A win against derby is a must so if we have injuries, i can see MM giving the U18's a run out

Just read on the BBC Football website that if we get past Southampton it will be our first appearance in the 4th round since 1993! Surely not although you don't need to be reminded how dismal our track record is in recent years. About time we improved on that...

Not great draw regardless of either teams lineup.

MM has never taken the Cups seriously with any of his clubs so I dont expect that to change. I will never, ever understand this modern day philosophy. Its the greatest competition in the world and to go on any sort of run is magic, but the approach of most now is to rest the first 11. What about momentun and belief?
Seem to recall Burnley progressed in one of the cups last year, did them no harm.

Come on MM give it a shot, it would then be worth the drive down.

I really like this draw...would have been better at home, but that said, a good chance to test our Premiership capabilities. Much better than playing lower league clubs and being knocked out. Give it a shot with our real team and let's see how far we have come, or how much more we have to do.

Daley ITFC.You were right,it was Feb 2 1974 when just over 20,000 saw us beat the saints 7.0. with Hamilton and Whymark scoring a brace each together with Beattie Mills and Lambert.Oh happy days when I was young(ish).
Eight years later Alan Brazil scored all five goals when Southampton were dispatched 5.2 also in Feb (82)
