Clarke Helps Pompey to Cup Shock
Wednesday, 12th Aug 2015 21:51

On-loan Town centre-half Matt Clarke played the full 90 minutes as League Two Portsmouth beat Championship Derby County 2-1 in the Capital One Cup first round at Fratton Park.

Clarke, 18, impressed throughout against a Rams frontline which featured ex-Blue Darren Bent as Pompey secured their place in the second round alongside the Blues.

Adam McGurk and Conor Chaplin scored the Portsmouth goals either side of Jason Shackell’s equaliser for Derby.

Academy product Clarke is with Pompey on a youth loan until January 3rd with Town able to recall him at 24 hours’ notice after the first 28 days of the spell.

The draw for the second round of the Capital One Cup takes place on Sky Sports following the Doncaster-Leeds tie on Thursday evening.

The winning teams from round one will be joined in the draw by the Premier League sides not competing in Europe. The 12 Premier League teams will be seeded alongside the top 12 round one winners.

Agree that Kenlock, Clarke, Yorwerth, Emmanuel looks pretty interesting for the future. Remember that we also have Knudsen, 22, and Hammond at the club.
I am sure Clarke will get a lot of experience and a lot of responsibility during the loanperiod and will come back in January - if not sooner - a player who is ready to play for us.

I think the answer to the question of 'why he is out on loan' is probably down to MM wanting to give him game time and real time league experience in the middle of a back four. Lets face it we have at least four centre backs ahead of him so game time would be limited at PR. Unlike the RB and LB positions which are less clear as to who will play there regularly. We also have a 24 hour recall after 28 days so if we need him we can get him back quickly.

Great to see youngsters looking good and getting a chance to play and gain experience good management it seems by MM and TC. Haven't seen Emmanuel yet as I couldn't get to Brentford but Kenlock and Yorwerth played well on Tuesday. CYOB

I have many Pompey fans from my time on the IOW & they are passionate about their club. If Clarke plays well they will love him & want to keep him but we want him back. Think this is a great club for him to be at, he'll be playing in front of big crowds for where Pompey are.
The Brentford comments re the pitch are ridiculous, the result was down to poor tactics with the substitutions by MM, nothing else. Can't see the Bees got any advantage from a poor pitch

Hope he does do well as my guy feeling is he's not in micks plans like Jack everyone was raving about him the next big thing? Although I do believe that town have a youth academy that's it's foundation is more solid than ever that the club will build on
