Freddie Sears believes Town can benefit from a good, positive start against Huddersfield at Portman Road tomorrow as they look to end a recent dip in form and return to winning ways.

Sears said: “We start most games quite brightly, or at least we always try to, and it’s always about trying to keep a clean sheet.

“If we can do that we’re going to win more games than we lose. For us it’s a case of going back to basics, staying solid and playing on the front foot. Hopefully we can keep that clean sheet and score a couple of goals.”

Last season Sears was like a breath of fresh air following his £100,000 bargain move from Colchester in January, netting nine times before the end of the campaign, including five in the last seven games prior to the ill-fated double header with Norwich in the play-offs.

Sears, who grabbed four goals in the first six league games this term but has now gone three without finding the net, added: “For a striker it’s not just important to score but also provide assists. I’ve got four goals and three assists so far and I want to do more — score further goals and add a few more assists as well.

“More importantly, if I’m able to do that, it will come down to winning games. That’s the most important thing, winning games.

“I don’t want to be the best player in the team and we’re bottom of the league. I’m pleased with my performances and I’ve had to work hard to keep going after the summer break.

“There’s a lot of competition for places this season and the gaffer has stuck with me. From my point of view I think I’ve done alright so far but the main aim is always to get the points on the board and we do that as a team.”

Sears and his colleagues have been working hard in training to shake off their recent woes and try to reclaim the form that saw them among the early-season leaders. He said: “The training hasn’t been too much different. We’ve had four days off but everyone has worked hard this week and I’m really confident that we can kick-start our season again.

“The 2-0 defeat at Blackburn game is the one that everyone is looking at right now but before that we drew two games in the league. Okay, probably not the best results at home, but if we had gone to Blackburn and won we wouldn’t be in this position.

“Things can change very quickly in football and if we win on Saturday we’ll be right back up there and looking forward with confidence to the trips to Hull and Nottingham Forest. A couple of wins and it can make such a difference.”
