Chris Makin says that justice was done when Alan Shearer missed his late penalty at St James' Park on Saturday. The ex-Sunderland man was penalised for an alleged foul on Clarence Acuna, who even the referee admitted had fallen easily.

Makin said: "I was amazed when the referee gave it. Even he said that Acuna went down easily, but he must have felt that I made some contact. I would have been devastated if Shearer had scored.

"We would have settled for a point at the start so this has to go down as a good draw really. I like to think of the display as being a continuation of the second half against Blackburn.

"We kept the standard up for 90 minutes. Now we face a massive game at home to Aston Villa next Saturday. It is a game that we must win."

Town skipper Matt Holland says it was important for Town to stop the run of defeats: "After four defeats on the trot we salvaged a great deal of pride with a display full of character."

"Overall we were disappointed not to get three points. In the end, though, we could have lost it. That would have been rough justice. One point is certainly better than none and from here I think three wins will be enough."
