Milne: Stick With Us
Monday, 11th Apr 2016 10:26

MD Ian Milne has urged wavering season ticket holders to stick with the Blues, despite Town now looking highly unlikely to repeat last season’s play-off finish. The early bird deadline for buying 2016/17 season tickets at the cheapest prices passes at midday today.

“We’re not in the relegation zone, we’re currently eighth and hopefully we’ll get higher,” Milne told BBC Radio Suffolk’s Life’s a Pitch prior to Saturday’s game against Brentford.

“I don’t think anything’s changed in many ways. Yes, we’d love to be in the top six, but we’re still a great football club with a great following.”

Town currently have just over 14,000 season ticket holders but with anecdotal evidence suggesting that a number of fans don’t plan to renew, many citing the style of play as much as results, that figure is likely to drop, perhaps as far the 12,000s, where sales were prior a boost provided by last season's success.

“That’s a pity, we’re still up there,” Milne added. “I understand what people say about it not being attractive football, but you can play attractive football and be in the relegation zone.

“It’s a very tough league, it’s gets tougher every year. We have to play to that, play to our strengths and keep the fight up.”

He dismisses suggestions that 2015/16 has been a wasted season: “Absolutely not, we have expanded the squad, the boys are still very confident, that’s where we want them to be and they’ve all worked extremely hard. Of course we’re feeling down, we’d love to be in the top six but it’s not over yet.”

He added: “Looking at just the players’ salary bill, it’s gone up 25 per cent over the last two seasons and 15 per cent over the last season, so that shows the expanding squad.

“We could say we’ve been unfortunate with some injuries, some key injuries, and it’s really good to see David McGoldrick and Teddy Bishop back and maybe they will give us that little bit of extra creativity that we need.”

Whether manager Mick McCarthy will be handed more cash for next season will be decided in the summer.

“The budget’s gone up and there’s going to be a discussion between Mick and Marcus in the summer about players and we need to wait for that,” the Blues MD continued.

“But I have no reason to think that he’s not going to continue to invest at or above the level he’s investing at the moment. There could be more money available, as there has been this season.”

Meanwhile, Milne says there has been no contact from Aston Villa regarding McCarthy, who remains second-favourite for the vacant manager’s job at the Premier League’s bottom side, behind ex-Leicester boss Nigel Pearson, with some bookies quoting a price as low as 5/2.

“Nothing at all, it’s just a lovely rumour for certain Aston Villa fans, I suspect,” Milne added.

“He’s here to stay, I saw him on Friday and we were talking about open days and pre-season and what have you.”"

Instead of continually moaning at ME for lack of investment, How many would be prepared to provide the extra funds through increased prices, or are they just happy to spend someone else's money?

I do think the only thing that will put our point across is empty seats. We all know that they include all season ticket holders when releasing gates for each match. So deflated after reading Milnes dross. I wonder if it would have changed at all if he had said it after the Brentford game.

A quick summary of his statement:

We are not being relegated so suck it up and keep giving us your money.

Our wage bill has risen because we gave everyone a boost for getting into the playoffs and now they have got that they are happy just to sit on it and play safe enough to stay in the championship. Most of them are getting on and know they are not good enough for the premiership and if we did go up we would have to get almost an entirely new team in to cope! Extending the contracts of carthourses like Douglas and people like Coke Tabb Digby and Toure is pointless, it is just throwing what little money we have away. None of those players and a few more are promotion material so why don't we get rid of some of the dead wood and get in some actual players who want to keep the ball on the floor and play some dam good entertaining football! I would rather miss out on playofs being entertained than miss out being bored to sh1t!!!

Going to have to lose some players to make ends meet. My guess is Sears, Dozzell and Smith. That might prove enough to balance the books. Given Bialkowsi's form, we could get several million for him if we decided to move him on. Then bring in free transfers and unwanted players from other clubs like we usually do. Can only see us getting worse next season. No mention from Milne about the most boring team in UK 2016 award (442), after having narrowly missed out in 2014 and 2015. If we win the world title will he be there to collect the cup?

Are we thinking about changing our name to Hoofball Utd?

I doubt many there would see the prospect of dull boring hoofball as "lovely"
Also to admit “I understand what people say about it not being attractive football" and then basically say but were not going to do anything about it but still buy your season tickets is disrespectful to the fans but then again no surprise either!

How on earth has Marcus Evans grown a multi million pound entertainment business if all his events are as bad as what we are seeing at the moment, I'm not having another season of broken promises "we will be investing money from transfers back in to the club, we won't rely on loans to get us over the last few games, we will have a better youth policy", another season of if plan A doesn't work see plan A (starting with a four four two and defend, go a goal down or not score so take a winger off bring on a forward, but move one of the other forward's into midfield to replace the winger who's just been taken off) another season of not having a rightback and a attacking midfielder.

When I look at the league table this morning I still can't fathom out how we're still as high as 8th?
The sides below us must've been on some shocking runs of results.

He might be thinking that we will be entertained by the other team. Most of the time that's the way it is anyways. We watch the opposition pass it short and long, back heel, dribble, attempt lobs and break up play. We just launch rockets into the sky.

Milne ... You can do one along with the dinosaur manager. You lie to the fans about investment. What do you actually do? What is your role? What do you bring to the football club?

Our wage bill has gone up by 25% ??? That's a disgusting stat, because it means we are paying 25% more for the same dross players we already had. There are no more than 3 or 4 players good enough for premier league football so rather than upping their wages the investment would have been better spent on recruiting and we could save your salary which gives us nothing.

The club has to stop lying to fans about its ambitions and start being realistic. Season tickets will drop dramatically. 12k will be max. But Milne will lie to us again and say it's more. After 30+ years I won't be one of them until value for money is restored and the level of entertainment comes back.

Live this football club but it's being ruined by idiots like this who lie and bring nothing to the table, an owner who uses us as a tax break for his profit making businesses, a manager stuck in the very distant past and a group of players who are nowhere near the standard required for promotion.

Sad sad days.

You are right, i had a spare ticket the other day for Charlton and took my mate and i was embarrassed by the end that i had taken him. But we were both saying that we actually enjoyed watching some of the football they produced and if they had a top striker they would of most definitely taken all the points away that day!

How about this Mr Milne - playing attractive football and making a good fist of getting promoted? Last season the league was won by a team who blew everyone away by doing exactly that. We may not have the investment they have had, but many of their current team played for them in L1 when they were hardly throwing millions about so it can be done by finding the right players adhering to the right principles.

On another front we need to make a final decision on Stewart in the Summer. Either he plays regularly with us or finds a permanent deal elsewhere.

This bloke is nothing more than a mouth piece for an owner who won't show his face. Surely he realised when he bought the club you can't be anonymous in football.
I have renewed because I love the club but I know plenty who haven't including my lad and he doesn't even pay for his own ticket he just got fed up seeing the same old rubbish.

I've been verry critical of MM's team sections and tactics this season, with some of my disagreements going back to the second half of last season or even earlier, however I want to be fair & not hypocritical, so I'm going to post a comment now that's bound to get me a few minuses. This does not mean that I am not frustrated by the lack of ambition, and we are only talking maybe two targetted players who could have made the difference, by ME & MM in building on the good work of the first 18 months or so to take us from being on the cusp to being genuine promotion contenders.
The team picked on Saturday had a number of elements to it that I & many other posters had been calling for: Bart was in goal, an actual RB was playing at RB with Chambers, a right footer, moved into the right centre half positon alongside Berra. Knudsen was at left back and with no Jonny Parr anymore, it was the only option.
So in essence we got what we asked for.
In midfield we played Maitland-Niles and Pringle on the wings, which again was as good as a selection as we could have hoped for from an attack-minded point of view in a 4-4-2. Obviously a fit Ryan Fraser would have made a difference or you could argue for Feeney to start, but it would be a marginal enough call. The central partnership is the one that really has people annoyed though & while I don't like the Skuse/Hyam partnership in general and would not have started them myself, I can understand Mick's thinking and will give him a break.
He had switched around the right side of his back four, putting a new central patrnership together who haven't really played together much, the full backs were told to push forward and he had 2 attacking wingers playing as opposed to a 3 man central unit. He probably felt he needed to provide cover for the centre halves by having two holding midfielders. With Foley, who has shown his quality on the ball, in at RB, the options for a creative player were not there anyway — Bishop is not match fit & wasn't even in the 18. Arguably Douglas would have been a better option with instructions to play in the role he had for Brentford last season, but that would not have gone down very well either.
Starting Varney was a surprise alright and I can't agree with that, but in general the team picked on Saturday was something that I cannot condemn if I am to have any credibility for consistency on here.
Does the result suggest that Mick has been right & I have been wrong with everything all along? I don't necessarily think so. The challenge on Judge, the sending off and the trying to get used to the new line-up & approach were all factors in how it went. The bafflingly poor form of Berra at times this season is another enigma which didn't help. The result was disappointing, but was not down to the team changes per se.
We have a long way to go to get the balance right in the side and a style of play that will get fans wanting to attend games again, but in a funny way my optimistic side tells me that maybe Saturday's game might have been a first step.

We are a laughing stock in the football league, a team voted most boring, a dinosaur manager that is at least 20 years behind the times and is too stubborn to admit he's wrong, even when he did admit it he done f##k all about it in his next game (ref Blackburn and Rotherham game) we have no back up plan if things go wrong we just continued to hoof it up front to MURPHY ( notice no goals since he's been out) our creative players not used, players playing out of position and unless you're one of MMs favourites (CHAMBERS. DOUGLAS. GERKEN BERRA SKUSE etc) you won't get a game next season unless you move on.
And the biggest joke for all? Our elusive owner who thinks by staying hidden he's some sort of hero??? Well Marcus Evans either you come out of hiding and be the face of Ipswich Town or sell up and let someone else take us on coz it's looking more and more like your too ashamed of 'your' club that's why your a so called man of mystery........ grow up and man up!!

Milne is deluded as is Evans. I think people will attend but without the burden of a season ticket. If like me, you travel hundreds of miles per game, you need to weigh up whether the premium prices at PR is justifiable based on the quality of entertainment on offer. The squad is poor as is the level of investment. Many will probably assess our summer transfer strategy and then pick and choose games. It's basic economics - is the product on offer inc. the level of investment from the owner worthy of spending out a considerable sum? Currently it isn't. We need Evans to commit to upping his spending, whilst the entertainment has to improve dramatically. The whole strategy needs a complete overhaul.

Expanded our squad...... Indeed with players that are not used i.e. Coke, Tabb, Malarcyzk, Clarke, Yorwerth, Emmanuel, Digby and Toure!
That's where the money has gone I guess.
Dreadful waste of money because the manager evidently does not have faith in any of them.

The only time there is mention of Jay Tabb is when he is on the golf course!

Positives:
Giving Mick McCarthy a contract extension means we have a chance of staying in the Championship, next season. Any team whose goalkeeper is player of the season is overachieving in terms of league position. (I remember how good Clive Baker and Craig Forrest used to have to be to keep us in the Premier League for three seasons.) We have McGoldrick and Bishop to come back. Mick McCarthy uses the loan market quite well. That is the type of club we now are, we can't escape that.

Negatives:
We do not have the footballing brain contacts to find a new great young manager and entice him to come to Ipswich Town. It is very hard to attract top players to join. On season ticket renewals, there should have been something from the owner as to his plans for the future, even if he's getting tired of it and really wants to walk away but can't. Iain Milne is guessing, just like the rest of us. Opposition to the new FFP loss limit means that there is not going to be a step change in terms of investment. The style of football is dire. Reaching the play offs last season set expectations very high for this season. If we were to get relegated from the Championship, I couldn't see us coming back up.

Part of the joy of watching football is the entertainment factor of good football. Winning isn't everything. I remember the game away at Charlton a couple of seasons ago we scored in the first 5 minutes and then the game feel apart in to a long ball contest. Came out of that game feeling like I had just witnessed a massive defeat not a 1-0 win. This was all down to the style of football. I will support the team through thick and thin but Milne effectively saying the style of football doesn't mean anything is total tripe. The dream is playing well and winning games, at the moment, not only are playing a sh**e brand of football we can't buy a win even against relegation threatened fodder. How we are still 8th is mind boggling.
