McCarthy: Outcast Stewart Could Work His Way Back Into My Plans
Saturday, 2nd Jul 2016 06:00

Blues boss Mick McCarthy says out-of-favour winger Cameron Stewart could get the chance to revive a Town career which looked to be over before it had even started.

The 25-year-old, pictured above enjoying a joke with Tommy Smith, Adam McDonnell and Cole Skuse at pre-season training on Tuesday, joined the Blues on a three-year deal in the summer of 2014 following his release by Hull City after a proposed move to his former loan club Leeds had broken down.

The one-time Manchester United trainee looked set to start the 2014/15 in the Town team but suffered a broken jaw in the final pre-season friendly at Leyton Orient and spent a number of months on the sidelines before finally making his debut as a sub in the FA Cup tie at Southampton and then appearing from the bench in the replay at Portman Road.

Those two games against the Saints remain the Mancunian’s only appearances for Town. He ended his first season on loan at Barnsley and was left out of the party which travelled to Ireland for Town’s annual pre-season training camp ahead of 2015/16 and was made available for transfer.

He joined League One Doncaster Rovers on loan for the first half of the campaign and subsequently extended his spell to the end of the season. In April, McCarthy reiterated that Stewart was available and said that he expected him to move on in the summer.

However, speaking at Tuesday’s first training session of pre-season, the Town boss said Stewart had returned in good shape, impressed him during testing the previous day and has given himself a chance of coming back into his plans.

“There’s been a bit of interest in him, but he’s done his bleep test and he’s come back really fit this time, so I didn’t have to fall out with him!” McCarthy said.

“If he’s of that mind and he wants to work hard and be involved in the squad and be fit then I’ll take him to Ireland and we’ll see because he’s got ability. But there has been a bit of interest in him.”

Asked whether the slate had now been wiped clean, he added: “Not quite a clean slate, clean-ish. He came back on the first day and did well, so that’s the first day, but he’s got a lot of work to do. I’d love him to do it and to be a success, but that’s down to him.”

From what I remembered everyone was very pleased with the signing of Stewart when he first signed, clearly he has a terrible attitude but good ability , you don't start with Man United if you don't have a bit, if we buy a new winger, he will be a similar player to him, so give him a clean slate, give him pre season and if he's still got a bad attitude you know you did all he can, I wouldn't hold your breath on too many money signings,

On a side note, Sheffield Wednesday reported an 11mil bid for McCormack! Where, what, how, financial fair play?????

On Mr Taylor whom had a drug ban went to Belguim, came back we signed him surely out of desperation, maybe you should ask the p/bro club doctor what he did before the game on Saturday mornings the guy was a disgrace on and off the field

This guy clearly has some ability but it would seem also has a less than exemplary attitude. Does he think he is better than ITFC ? Why has no one "better" snapped him up? Thought he was a good player at Hull and roasted us when at Leeds (admittedly was only up against Chambers!!!) but would live to see our investment pay off and see him perform for us. He must be better than playing Bish or Bru out of position again ??? Let's hope he really wants to prove himself and performs to s level where dinosaur CANT leave him out and allows us to spend on other areas (if mr tax dodge will spend)

Go prove MM wrong Cameron, I would live to see you be a success for ITFC !!!!!

Positive enough for you Pragmatic ?????

Being fit/fitter is one thing being good enough with quality is another...wasn't impressed with him before we signed him. As mentioned all the signs are there for few additions this summer, certainly not permanent ones

In the past feel that Mick McCarthy has been a bit too quick to discard players he has signed before their contracts are up,
without really giving them a chance in the first team;so lets hope it works out for Stewart and Ipswich.

Seem to recall that he received a big payout from Leeds, after a court case;and perhaps he now realises that with his contract up here at the end of the season, that this money wont last him for the rest of his life

Yes indeed, ipswich4life. If there was any chance before last night, there certainly isn't now! Truly wonderful goal and an energetic performance. Good luck to the lad and to Wales!

desperate times call for desperate measures, stewart might work out but mm put himself in a difficult scenario off getting rid of the loyal trustworthy players, tabb, hunt, anderson who done so well for us. http://www.transfermarkt.com/statistik/vertragslosespieler website of all the out of contracts players we can easily sign if they want to raise the wage budget a tiny bit.. been realistic, some decent players on it can make a difference.. Carlton Cole would be a great signing

Cameron had his legal battle with Leeds hanging over him when be first arrived. No doubt this affected him. It is now finished & he got good outcome. He actually seems like a decent guy TBH. I hope this is the rebirth of his Town career.
He has ability to be top Championship winger, if he is fully focused , he will be great for us.

I find the whole thing a joke.
We pay someone who cant be arsed and then get excited when he decides he might try a little bit.

There are two ways to look at this. Either way we win. Either we get a quality, much needed winger, or MM has just given him a good reference so be can move on. Probably the latter. Simple but effective people management.

Stewart, Bishop, McDonnell, Sears...seems like MM thinks we have enough on the wings now to make a play for the top 6.

Just slightly concerned that Skuse, Hyam, Douglas, Coke might not be creative enough to supply balls to the wings in the first place.

This is just typical Mick and ITFC few weeks ago the lad couldn't get in a struggling league one team, now all of a sudden he is a option again. We started last season with Fraser and Maitland Niles as our wingers and we still didn't make top 6. We desperately need two quality wide players who will supply and score goals

If Stewart is back in-form he could be a welcome addition. I know he didn't excel at Barnsley but he did score 4 goals in his 23 appearances for Doncaster which is ok for a winger. He's still young and has plenty of years left in football.

This may require a good bit of man management----is Mick up to it?

Got one or two good goals last year whilst out on loan and guess we are still paying him.

The way I see it Stewart was a bad investment, but for every game he will be involved the smaller the loss. Trust Mick.

@MarkFish: Exactly mate, spot on comment. Why are we pleased that he should be arose after two who,e seasons of probably taking in min £10k a week for doing nothing. Personally I never want to see him in a Town shirt again.

@ipswich4Life: I suggested Robson Kanu, tell me why that's do funny? He is a free agent, can play as a winger or Centre Forward. You got a better idea? 'Fans' make pointless comments without adding anything constructive, well done.

It is all about his attitude, he needs to buckle down and kick on. He has pace, you can't put that into a player, but needs the work ethic that is now needed in modern day teams.
