Wolverhampton Wanderers 0-0 Ipswich Town - Match Report
Tuesday, 16th Aug 2016 21:42

Town were denied what would have been a deserved first away victory of the season at Wolves after Daryl Murphy had a perfectly good first-half goal disallowed, apparently for offside, the game ending 0-0. The Irishman headed home a Grant Ward corner, keeper Bartosz Bialkowski having saved an earlier Jon Dadi Bodvarsson penalty.

Boss Mick McCarthy made two changes to the team which lost 2-0 at Brentford on Saturday with Teddy Bishop and Jonathan Douglas coming into the side for Kevin Bru, who dropped to the bench, and the injured Conor Grant.

The Blues lined-up in a 4-3-3 formation with Freddie Sears and Ward either side of Daryl Murphy up front, while Bishop started in midfield with Cole Skuse and Douglas. Luke Varney was named among the subs for the first time since rejoining the club for a third spell.

Town started slightly nervously with Bialkowski twice scuffing clearances in the opening minute but with the home side unable to profit.

Wolves took the game to the Blues in the early stages but without being able to find a way beyond Town’s well-drilled defence and midfield until the seventh minute when Conor Coady’s ball sent Joe Mason away on the right but the former Cardiff man crossed into an empty box.

Town threatened for the first time two minutes later. After Douglas had won the ball, Bishop’s right-wing cross was cleared back out to Ward, whose lofted ball towards Murphy at the far post was diverted away from the striker by keeper Carl Ikeme’s flick.

The Blues began to see more of the ball and on 14 Ward’s cross from the right found Sears at the near post but Kortney Hause turned the ball out for a corner. Ward’s flag-kick was cleared out to Jonas Knudsen, but the Danish international half-volleyed well wide.

Hause picked up the game’s first yellow card in the 20th minute for tripping Ward after the former Spurs man had neatly spun away from Matt Doherty and was taking the ball away from the former Wycombe Wanderers defender. Ikeme somewhat flapped at Bishop’s freekick under pressure but the ball fell safely for the Midlanders.

The Blues had been on top since the early stages but in the 24th minute Wolves were given a golden chance to go in front from the penalty spot.

Joao Teixeira played Bodvarsson in on the left of the area and Adam Webster rather needlessly slid and sent the Icelander tumbling. There were no protests from the Town players after referee Peter Bankes pointed the spot.

Bodvarsson took the kick himself and hit it low to Bialkowski’s right but the Pole got down quickly to stop it with a strong right hand, much to the relief of Webster.

A Wolves lead would have been harsh on the Blues, who four minutes later thought they had gone in front.

A Knudsen cross from the left was bundled behind ahead of Douglas and, after his first corner had been headed behind, Ward whipped in a ball to Murphy, who flicked a header home.

Just as the Town players started to celebrate, referee Bankes noticed that the linesman had raised his flag and ruled the goal out, presumably for offside as an indirect freekick was awarded.

Blues assistant Terry Connor subsequently spent several minutes in conference with the fourth official, who seemed equally bewildered regarding the decision.

Replays suggested the linesman may have thought Sears had added a final touch after Murphy’s header, however, he didn’t appear to and in any case looked to be onside.

Despite the disappointment, the Blues continued to have the better of the game and in the 36th minute Bishop screwed a shot well wide after a quickly taken freekick on the right, then soon afterwards the 20-year-old made a typically strong run into the area from deep before being crowded out.

As the half moved into injury time former Wolves defender Christophe Berra lost his man as Bishop sent over a freekick from the right but sent his header wide.

Knudsen won a corner on the Blues left just as referee Bankes brought an entertaining half to an end.

Town will be pleased with their 45 minutes’ work but disappointed to have had what looked a perfectly good goal ruled out.

Aside from the first few minutes the Blues had been on top and - other than the penalty which was well saved by Bialkowski - had created all the chances.

Wolves switched Dave Edwards for George Saville at the start of the second half, while Town remained unchanged.

Teixeira shot not too far wide two minutes after the restart after Webster had been caught in possession.

On 55 Bishop was yellow-carded for a mistimed challenge on the Portuguese midfielder, then two minutes later the academy product was replaced by Kevin Bru.

Wolves switched Bodvarsson for Helder Costa in the 65th minute with the Blues shading a half of few chances, while the home fans were becoming increasingly frustrated.

In the 67th minute a long spell of neat and tidy Town possession ended with Knudsen sending over a cross which was just too high for skipper Luke Chambers beyond the far post.

As the match moved into its final 20 minutes, Ward brought the ball forward from deep before hitting a shot which flew wide. Knudsen has his name added to referee Bankes’s book in the 72nd minute for a foul on Teixeira.

From the resultant freekick, a bouncing ball fell to Costa not far outside the area and the sub hit a powerful volley which Bialkowski did well to save across to his left.

Bru shot through to Ikeme after the ball fell to him on the edge of the area on 75 - Town’s first shot on target of the evening - the disallowed goal aside - then Murphy hit an effort on the turn, also straight at the Nigerian international keeper.

Doherty shot wide for the home side in the 79th minute but Town continued to look the more threatening of the two teams.

Three minutes later, Blues skipper Chambers was booked for a foul on Doherty not far outside the area on the left. Douglas blocked Evans’s freekick. With six minutes left on the clock Teixeira was replaced by Jed Wallace, a one-time team-mate of Webster’s at Portsmouth.

With a minute of scheduled time remaining, Ikeme failed to claim a Knudsen throw and Bru hooked goalwards but Danny Batth headed away with Berra looking to add another touch. Seconds later, Bru was somewhat harshly booked when Ikeme kicked the ball straight at him.

In three minutes of injury time Knudsen shot wide from distance, then Varney made his third debut for the club taking over from Sears.

Just before the final whistle Berra was more understandably booked for impeding the keeper as he sought to get rid of the ball quickly.

A 0-0 draw of the more entertaining variety - the second successive stalemate between the teams at Molineux - with Town certainly the better of the two teams having put in their best - and most stylish - display of the season.

A point would have been welcome at the start of the game but after the performance and particularly the disallowed goal the Blues will return to Suffolk disappointed that they hadn’t claimed all three.

Shocking decision to rule out Murphy's goal. We should be on 6 points from 9 today.

on Douglas... he is not and never will be a defensive midfielder. Yes Mick chooses to play him in that role but he is never going to be any good at it. He doesn't have the legs to break up play and winning the ball.
He is better suited to a more attacking midfield role which is how he got so many goals at previous club. Arriving late into the box
The thing is.. we have better/younger players in the squad to play that role so he shouldn't get near the starting 11 unless we lose Bishop/Bru/Dozzer/Grant to injury

First game of the season and full of intrepidation as we made the trip up .....but have to say came away much more heartened than I ever believed I would
Parking the car we heard the team selection of Douglas starting ...good ole mick stubborn as always and picking his favourites ...shall we turn round and go home now??
Walking to the ground plenty of optimistic wolves fans...their team were going to see a win
Credit where credit is due..Douglas had a 7/10 game...hardly world beating but did his job probably better than I have ever seen
Bart...amazing ........can Gerkin ever be number one...would he have pulled off those two fantastic saves?
Knudsen ......great going forward lacks awareness enough to get back in his position quickly enough once he has done his part on the move.
Berra.......looks knackered and vulnerable
Webster .......at last a ball playing CB.....and don't loose his head when he gave away penalty ....don't ruin him Mick just because he doesn't play hoofball ......his calmness and deliberateness in playing the ball out to find a player means we don't panick and are not on the back foot every time a ball gets hoofed out to an opposition player
Chambers.......no longer the man we once had....doesn't act like a captain and is undoubtedly our weak point in the team...we need his passion back but playing him in his better position of CB
Skuse..did the dirty work well....again not a world beater ....we only need him or Douglas to play
Ward....excellent ...premiership class and calmness
Bishop .....good linking balls but needs to get away from the nailed on yellow card he always seems to get
Sears....looks jaded and fed up being played out of position ...however looked happier as the game went on and just runs his socks off....a couple of goals and confidence will coming flooding back
Murphy .......if we get offered £2million for him he has to go...and just let us be be used that we then have lost £2m on him from last years fee.....does his knock down job well but not the answer to our current goal scoring problems....and with less hoofball will see him ..or at least his role become less crucial to us
....didn't expect much came away satisfied that the team put in a decent shift ....disappointed that the nailed on goal was disallowed but delighted we didn't loose, which based on comments of previous two outings although nothing to shout about was a positive in itself

....now to copy and paste from the last 18 months of comments
Bart needs to remain NO1
Team need a fully ready , trained RB
We need a decent striker....perhaps raw talent from a lower league but someone to excite
Play less hoofball
......bring the crowds back

....positives .
Douglas played better
Money Mick has spent on ward and Webster looks well invested
Get Sunday out of the way ....clear the anxiety of potentially loosing to our neighbours and kick the season on

Thought it would be a point before the game...3 games in and again our best player consistently on the pitch is our goalkeeper which says it all.
If we hadn't lost to an ordinary Brentford side on saturday I would have said this was a good point but again W1 D1 L1 is hardly a reason to get the pulse racing!

Early days though.

I see they starting to make arrests in connection with the olympic games ticketing scandal, does anyone know if Marcus is found guilty in taking part does this mean the FA would force the sale of the club?

I do hope so he has helped to ruin this club by hiring awful managers the worst ten years in our history

Good game, good game, but to some not good enough, if these people are expecting town to go through a whole season either winning or drawing games they are living in cloud la la land. This is a marathon not a sprint remember

I thought this forum was about football and our club not personal attacks and whether you get up or down arrows. Ipswich supporters should be better than that. Keep to the issues and cut out all the hate stuff.

Bert - did you see anything wrong with Murphy's goal last night then? I thought it was a diabolical decision.

Could not have said it better, thats our team over the last few years in a nutshell. We bloody well all can see this. Its really guts me to see our RB problem and central mids or strikers played out wide our no creativity midfield and our managers reluctants to have proper width. We will always get 0 0 draws and possibly hold on for some wins but I do believe our supporters deserve much much better and Im not talking about winning titles our playing Barca style but been in or around the playoffs area come May will do me in our current state.Dont think im asking too much for a club iv supported for over 35 years.

Humour of course, opinion yes but character assassination no. For those who persist in the words of hate against a player or MM just remember that hate spreads contempt and leeches into an atmosphere that eventually ruins the very thing we all believe in.

A point away at Wolves is a good result, and obviously a clean sheet is also positive.
More concerning is the lack of goals and looking at the squad where are they going to come from?
Massive game on Sunday, and a MUST WIN I might add!
Mcarthy better fire the lads up for this one. We need to put one over them! Can't believe the last time we beat them was under Super Jim! A win would put us on cloud 9.........

brendenward35 - what a lovely thought! I see BBC Sports have mentioned his name, plus ours, then gone on to say that three additional arrest warrants have been signed though not yet executed but the insinuation is there, let us keep our fingers crossed!
