Frustration was the overriding feeling for Blues defender Adam Webster following Saturday’s 2-0 defeat at Bristol City, a game in which he believed there was little between the sides.

Lee Tomlin netted a 31st minute penalty and Luke Freeman sealed the three points for the Robins with a superb volley 18 minutes from time. David McGoldrick came closest to scoring for the Blues when Robins keeper Frank Fielding tipped his shot on to the post 10 minutes after half-time.

“It was frustrating, we’re all frustrated at the result,” Webster said. “There wasn’t too much in the game.

“The ref’s given them a penalty which was a bit soft and then obviously there was the wonder strike which killed our momentum a bit. But there are positives to be taken and we’ll take them into next week’s game.”

As is so often the case in the Championship a close game was turned on a couple of incidents.

“Whoever can get that extra step or that bit of luck can come out on top, and that’s what happened today,” Webster continued. “As I say, it’s frustrating."

The result saw the Blues, who are still to win back-to-back games this season, drop to 16th, five points ahead of third-bottom Cardiff, who visit Portman Road next Saturday, but also only seven from the top six, which Webster says illustrates the tightness of the Championship.

“Everyone beats everyone in this league, it’s not just us,” he said. “Teams up and down the league will be feeling exactly the same as we are at the minute. Fine margins in games can help you win games.”

He added: “It’s very up and down, there’s so much quality in the league. There’s a difficult fixture every week, we know that. We’ll be doing everything we can this week in preparation for next Saturday.

“Next week’s a massive game for us, so we need [the fans] behind us and hopefully we can get three points.”

Despite the disappointment of results such as Saturday’s, Webster says he’s settled into life in the Championship having moved up from League Two when he joined the Blues from Portsmouth in the summer.

“I’m loving every minute of it, obviously it’s a big step up but I’m really enjoying it and I just want to kick on from here,” he said.

The former England U18 and U19 international missed the Nottingham Forest game last month with a hamstring strain, one of a couple of minor injuries he has suffered this season, but says he’s now fully over the problem.

“It’s all good now, touch wood. It’s been a bit frustrating, a couple of little niggles, but hopefully that’s behind me now and I can really kick on.”

Meanwhile, Town’s U23s are in Premier League Cup action against Huddersfield at Portman Road this evening (KO 7pm). Striker Brett Pitman is expected to be involved as he continues his comeback from his ankle injury.

The Blues’ U18s, who face Nottingham Forest in the FA Youth Cup at the City Ground on Tuesday evening, were beaten 1-0 at Watford on Saturday morning.

Elsewhere, former Blues midfielder Andy Drury, 33, has rejoined his former club Ebbsfleet after having his Eastleigh contract terminated by mutual consent.

Ex-Blues striker Ronan Murray has signed for Galway United back in his native Republic of Ireland having left Notts County in the summer.

The 25-year-old is reunited with his former Blues academy team-mate David Cawley, who joined the Tribesmen from St Patrick's Athletic earlier in the week.

Former Town midfielder Geraint Williams has left his role coaching the Wales U21, U19 and U17 squads with his contract, which ended last Wednesday, not having been renewed. Williams, 54, had been in the position since 2012.

bobbyrobsonisgod added 18:36 - Dec 5 Webster was one of the better players on the day. What i found incredulous in the second half was he was playing ahead of Douglas. He is one of a few brighter moments in this season which sadly is just going from worse to worse. Please Mick, what do you see in Douglas, Knudsen or Chambers? Enlighten me, because i can not remember a game in ages where they had credit and Knudsen is still dining out on his Norwich Goal. I can not wait to have Pitman back (amazing really, i live in Bournemouth and watched him quite a bit there and thought he was poor, now he is one of our better and more creative players - says a lot!) and want to see McGoldrick get back in form. I just hope we do something with the centre of the park too - why have Jonny Williams on the bench and then bring him on in a wide position to try and turn the game around? Also one of the quietest away games i have been too in a long time, but i know why. The fans are deflated - who would want to stand up and sing Mick Ma now? You would be lynched....MICK OUT

bbg added 21:36 - Dec 5 battyblue: i recall Leicester winning the Premier League and Portugal the Euro's playing low possession, physical, hard working ,counter attacking football. You cut your cloth to measure. I dont think their supporters complained. You find a way to win, but it helps when you have in-form top goal scorers. It's only eighteen months since the championship play-off, in case people have forgotten that team had the same manager and included Chambers, Skuse, Berra, etc. The difference between then and now? Transfer fees too good to turn down and strikers in form. This is the first really bad run since MM was appointed. How many managers in the clubs history didn't have a bad run? I think he might have expected a bit of loyalty for saving the club a few years ago and taking it to a play off.

But in case you missed the point this forum, it's all about fans' opinions and I fail to see how you, or I, would really know if we could have bought Fraser, or if Bournemouth would have sold him. What I do know is Evans could afford him if he wanted to, and he could have made a massive difference to our squad and the type of football we play.
