McCarthy: Red Card Affected Us More Than Them
Saturday, 10th Dec 2016 18:42

Town boss Mick McCarthy felt Sol Bamba’s second-half red card affected his side more than Cardiff after the Blues’ 1-1 home draw with the Bluebirds.

The visitors went ahead through Aron Gunnarsson in the 38th minute after Bartosz Bialkowski dropped a Peter Whittingham corner, before Luke Varney equalised for the Blues on 52.

“The game was going nowhere and arguably our most consistent and best player drops a corner,” McCarthy reflected.

“And he has been brilliant so I’ll have no recriminations with him at all because he made some good saves today as well.

“Fair play to the lads, they had a good response to that in the second half and got back in it and the sending off probably affected us more than it affected them, strangely enough.

“They sat in, made it difficult to play around them and through them. We were doing alright against 11 men, so I think it had a worse effect on us.”

Why does that happen sometimes? “I don’t know, maybe the thought of not winning against 10 men, the thought of maybe even losing against 10 men gets in players’ heads.

“And they’re no mugs, they put Anthony Pilkington and Craig Noone on as two subs and they aren’t too bad either. By no stretch of the imagination are they mugs.”

McCarthy was pleased with Varney, who scored for the second home game in a row: “He’s great, Reg. He’s an infectious character, he’s done great for me. And he just causes problems because he competes constantly, it was great to see him get his goal.”

Regarding the red card, McCarthy said: “I’ve seen a lot of players lose it, I’ve lost it myself, but never with the fourth official.

“He was trying to get at Dougie. Pits was going on and Didz was trying to stop him and he said, ‘Let him go’ because he could see what was coming. He couldn’t get at Dougie so he came and had a go at the fourth official.

“It probably was a foul but you can’t condone that whatever’s happened. He thoroughly deserved to be sent off, the way he approached the fourth official.

“It was a reaction to Dougie’s challenge because he went to go and get Dougie. He got stopped from doing that.

“You just can’t do it, you can’t behave like that. You’ve seen when anybody runs and throws their arms up they get booked.

“A lot had gone off. It took a long time before he went across. As I said, it was a foul on him, but the game went on, he gave them an advantage. It’s a red card.”

The Town boss was disappointed that his side were unable to create many chances against the 10 men.

“Of course I am,” he continued. “We got Bish on the ball once and he worked his magic, we got a freekick and we put the freekick over the bar. We’ve got to work the goalie, hit the wall, it might have skidded in. That deflates us.

“We got in behind them a number of times and didn’t put a decent cross in. I was banging on about that last week and I still am this week. And I will be.”

He added: “But as long as they keep getting in them and keep doing it, if they stop doing it that’s going to be a real problem. Keep doing it, keep getting on the overlap, keep getting crosses in and we’ll keep working on them.”

Having made the mistake that led to the goal, Bialkowski went some way towards redeeming himself with a late save from Craig Noone.

“Our game management was ridiculous there,” the Town boss reflected. “Whatever we do, if we’re one-all we just take the point, but we certainly don’t do what we did at the end by giving them a chance, giving them a freekick.

“Whittingham hit the wall, strangely enough, he got a corner. They had a chance from the corner, they had a chance from the other corner. They just kept sustained pressure on and Noone right at the very death could have nicked it. Thankfully, he didn’t.”

Mickszzztactics: Varney has become the new Tabb. He might well still be playing here in 2 years time if Mick gets his way. Just like you, I have nothing against Varney...but he should be playing every other match not every match. And for those who say he's Murphy's replacement...that makes no sense. At one point we had both players at the club. We signed Varney again, he didn't replace Murphy. Murphy has yet to be replaced. We should expect that replacement in January (we'll all want a young, eager striker and we'll get some free transfer who is 6ft 5, been out of the game for some time and is 37). We are in real trouble and I hope every fan sees this. We will survive this year but I am already worried about next season when we sell Bart and Webster and replace them with 2 frees.

My question to you MM is "Why did you not play JW,or bring him on when Cardiff went down to 10 men"
Has he done something wrong or upset your feelings.!!

I've got the horrible feeling that things will have to get much worse at this club before they get better.

Now at the point where I almost want us to lose games to expedite McCarthy's departure. That's a horrible way to feel about the club I love.

Firstly I can't fathom how Douglas got near enough to foul Bamba. But this must be the only thing he has done all season

MicksZzzTatics how ironic that your final word was 'period'!

It would help to actually read your rantings if you used a few in the proper places along with paragraphs to break up your sentences...

I agree Michael11
Will MM please stop using the stupid nicknames like he's the players best mate. You are the manager so start acting like one and drop the players who are not performing. Or better still drop yourself!

Oh Mick...you have got to be ******g kidding me with that 11 vs 10 player comment! Surely you could not be so deluded to think we would swallow such "post match assessment from a highly experienced and seasoned manager"...

What does it take to say the team you led was just not good enough to beat 10 men Cardiff?

Pride? Arrogance?

...... says it all when one of MM's currently 'top blokes' was on his way to Port Vale - when, out of desperation, he get's the call by McCarthy to come back after being released.

The Club's AMBITION:- Stay in the Championship (just).

The Managers AMBITION:- Keep looking after his mates - and continue laughing all the way to the Bank for as long as he possibly can.

The Owners AMBITION :- ..... I think most of us know what that is .... !!! ....... see above, for part of it.

Never mind soon be spin time again ....... and they all know that it will work with some - those that expect little. or nothing.

On the bright side might be worth putting a fiver on Lincoln . Mind you Mick always plays his reserves so will be worth spending a tenner to actually see Joniesta playing and maybe a proper right back!
It still makes me smile when you think our biggest win under MM was when he was sick and TC took over for the day !
Though ME was a business man is he happy to lose over £200000 every home game in gate receipts !
Also apart from Bart the 2 centre halves and Lawrence think we need more than a couple of players to improve.
Varney was rubbish yestetday didn't hold up the ball didn't win a header even his goal was deflected.
Think the Ipswich Star needs a new computer keeps repeating the same interview with MM every week ! MM is a legend in his own lunch time and wouldn't keep repeating the same old s@&£ every week .
I should go and watch the same film every Saturday as I know what the outcome will be . Bit like watching Ipswich !
For the love of god please sack the dinosaur so I don't have to waste my time putting negative comments on twitter and text.
At least will have £500 to spend on summer holiday next year as won't have to buy a season ticket.

That is a bit harsh guentchev, thinking Varney is the new Jay Tabb (In fact I think that is very harsh). Probably more like the new Richard Naylor, not brilliant, and knows his limitations, but puts the effort in. Ideal substitute and Cheap !!!

I am 73 next week Born in Ipswich My dad's team so I supported from an early age I can remember Division 3 South where we played the likes of Colchester Grimsby were in the 2nd division then Lose the next two games Birmingham have shipped 8 in the last two games and Wigan will be difficult to beat and we may be in the bottom 3 by Christmas Then the third division will be beckoning
Does anyone who takes their money each month in the Ipswich setup really care passionately about the team or is it as often posted here names on the teamsheet with a nailed on certainty to play unless they have a broken leg or some other serious complaint so they are complacent
I despair but every week at match time I am hoping that something gels and the team start playing for Ipswich Town again

The two points that are miles apart are these..

We have the best interests of Ipswich town at heart.
Mick Mcarthy has the best interests of Mick Mcarthy at heart.

The question should be..

Where does our spineless owners interests lie? Because it feels like he's putting Mick Mcarthy before our Club!

I hope it doesnt come to protests and banners, i dont think we have ever ousted a manager with protests and dont want to now but if he wont walk then i can see it coming.

Do the right thing, clear your desk and go!

Players like Burley and butcher may not have gone onto be the great players they were had MM been in charge. He is playing a massive part in destroying this club and its traditions. It shocks me to think there is anybody left who wants him here!

Today whilst reading one of the Sunday papers sports pages I saw a headline which stated "McCarthy on his way" For a minute I thought ITFC had finally found their senses and had acted to remove the manager. Then I read the article and it was referring to James McCarthy of Everton who is expected to move in the January transfer window. Never mind so Mick lives to fight another day but the end must be soon.

Finally got round to watching the highlights, as I had absolutely no interest any earlier this weekend, and it seems pretty obvious that Cardiff had far more chances than us. Another poor team selection (how does JW not get in the first 11?) and yet another poor performance. I've given up. Much like so many other supporters. I do not believe that we will get a new striker in January and I do not believe that things will ever improve at all by simply trying the same things over and over and over again. Worst of all though I do not believe that we will be rid of Mick until we are relegated... but I'm pretty certain that's where we're headed.

18pts off the promotion places at this stage in not good.
I expect town to be in place 1 or2 at this stage of the season, obviously the owner and the manager and a large percentage of fans expect alot less.
But whats the point of aiming low ?

RoyalAscotBlue, Mick won't be here when we're relegated. Much like he wasn't when Wolves and Sunderland were. He'll just get us into a position where relegation is almost a forgone conclusion and then will leave/get sacked.

Mark,Tractor Beezer,Martin587 and Royal Ascot Blue:-

McCarthy was asked about Jonny Williams, and he said that he doesn't fit into a 4-4-2 system.
Unfortunately for JW (and the supporters)Micks favorite formation is the above.

Jonny can play in a different system we are told ie 4-3-3 , 4-5-1 or 4-2-3-1 but not in the Dino's favorite system, which he is now playing having ditched other formations earlier in the season,as he did last year.

This is despite the Welsh International saying earlier that central midfield is his favorite position.

THINKS IT'S OUR ESTEEMED MANAGER(in his opinion)NOT PLAYING JONNY BECAUSE THE FANS GAVE HIM SUCH AN OVATION WHEN HE WAS WARMING UP.Remember Mick saying "If the fans are calling for a certain player to come on as sub, then I am less likely to bring them on.HOW CHILDISH IS THAT.

Fear we could lose Jonny, just like we have other good players that were not one of his favorites.
