Thursday, 12th Jan 2017 13:36

A six of the best Town postcard collection from the early 1970s will go under the hammer at Martlesham auctioneers Lockdales on Sunday 29th January.

The plain back cards carry pictures of David Best, Mick Lambert, Mick McNeil, Jimmy Robertson, Bryan Hamilton and Mick Mills. Lockdales have put a catalogue guide price of £100 to £125 on the set.

Auction manager James Sadler said: “Town memorabilia of this nature, and from this era, has been much sought after. We are anticipating there being much interest in these postcards.”

Jimmy Robertson was a massive signing for us and David Best my favourite GK.

I remember BBC Grandstand interviewing Jimmy Robertson in the early 70's. He was spotlighted because he was, at the time, the longest distance footballing commuter, traveling from London area, where he lived, to Ipswich. What I didn't like was when he actually laughed at the suggestion of moving down here. Never forgot that. Agree, David Best brilliant keeper.

Think Town got JR and 'sniffers' brother Frank Clark(Auntie)about same time.

In those days used to be in the 'North Stand'with my late brother-in-law.

Happy days!

This is good news
I have a framed picture of the whole team, in individual postcards above my desk
Sivell, Best, Mills, Harper, Beattie, Hunter, Hamilton, Morris, Viljoen, Johnson, Whymark, Lambert
All signed as well
Not for sale though!
Used to love getting those those pictures in the club shop in the West Stand
Loved that team, 1973 I reckon...

You're right, it was Frank at the same time. 1973 was indeed a great year. Knees up mother brown in the north stand, I can feel it now. Away fans just a row of coppers away. Still can't watch from anywhere other than The North.

Yes, we signed Robertson & Frank Clarke in March 1970, just before the old transfer deadline. SBR realised we needed a more potent attack if we were to survive in D1. I think it cost £100,000 for the pair & that was a lot of money for Town at the time. Robertson score 3x in 7 games & I'm sure Clarke weighed in with a few as well.

We signed Rod Belfitt soon after
As I remember, he was scoring goals for fun, as an 8 year old i was surprised that Sir Bobby let him go
Only to be replaced by David Johnson (£125,000)- how was he going to match up

Pretty well I'd say
What a brilliant bloke as well - so approachable

Saw and chatted to David Johnson a couple of years ago when he bought over a liverpool all stars team to play in North Cyprus (if you know anything about the history here that is quite a big deal).
John Wark was also there and scored two typical Warky goals, DJ was a coach.

Both were impressed at how many Town expats turned out to see these two.

Jimmy Robertson was my first ITFC hero,I wish we had some now

As a young man I remember David Best pulling off the best save from a goalkeeper I have ever seen. I swear he dived the full length of the goal and still caught the ball from a free kick just outside the penalty area, Churchmans end, pretty sure it was against Southampton. We had proper keepers in those days.

I'd say we have a proper keeper now!
