McCarthy Annoyed By Rotherham Defeat
Saturday, 22nd Apr 2017 18:15

Town boss Mick McCarthy was annoyed that his much-changed side failed to take their chances and conceded a poor goal and were beaten 1-0 away by Rotherham United.

“I’m annoyed that we’ve lost, that’s my assessment,” McCarthy said. “We got away with it because Gerks made a good save [from Danny Ward’s early penalty] and I said to them at half-time, we’d have had burning legs and burning lungs because they hadn’t all been playing.

“They’d got over that and in the second half I thought we were better and we made chances and I think we should have been in front, but we contrived to find another way to give a goal away.

“It was a good finish by him [Tom Adeyemi] in the end but it shouldn’t have got to that. I’m a bit miffed about it.

“It was difficult to get back into it because there wasn’t long left and they got a real kick out of it and they could sit back and they’ve got a fair bit of pace up front, to be fair to them. We didn’t take our chances and they kept doing us on the break.”

McCarthy felt his team gelled as the game progressed after Rotherham had had the better of the early stages.

“We had got beyond that at half-time,” he added. “OK, we lacked a bit of cohesion with the way we were passing it but I thought we started to get that in the first half and in the second half we did have it and we were better. But we didn’t take our chances when we got them and managed to give a goal away.”

Is that perhaps inevitable when there are so many changes to a team? “It’s not inevitable. It didn’t look inevitable until that goal went in. If we don’t take our chances, if we don’t score, don’t get beat, but we did.”

McCarthy cited January signing Danny Rowe’s performance as a plus to be taken from the match.

“We had three midfielders at the start and Toums, Bish and Doz didn’t dominate that, their lads in midfield coped with that,” he said.

“I changed it to 4-4-2 and I thought Dominic Samuel showed a bit at times but Danny Rowe I thought was a real bright spark out of all of it, a positive.

“He came and he had a slight knock, then he came in and he was impressing everybody. Then he got injured again.

“And for the last two or three weeks he has been great in training. I was that close to playing him at Burton, but it wasn’t a debut day that, at Burton, and as it turned out that proved to be right. Newcastle wasn’t either.

“Today was and he’ll be pleased with his debut, I think. I am, I’m certainly pleased with him, he’ll be a player for us.”

Regarding Andre Dozzell, he added: “He’s a good player Dozzer, I’m not sure we dictated that midfield even with the quality we had in it. But he’s got some lovely subtle touches and he’s developing.

“There lies the problem, he is developing, he’s not the finished article yet, but when he is he’ll be a very good player.”

Was it a difficult decision to make as many changes as he did? “For the reasons I gave on Thursday it was, but the other side of that it wasn’t because I wanted to give some of them a chance.

“They’ve travelled up and down the country most of those but have not had much game time, sometimes sat in the stand, sometimes sat in the stands, watched all the others play.

“It was their opportunity, albeit slightly unfair, I get that because there were nine changes. It’s like playing a League Cup tie.

“I wasn’t being disrespectful to Rotherham, not in any way, shape or form. I was being respectful to my team and my squad and giving them a game and pretty much for most of it it was even-stevens.

“But I should congratulate Warney [Rotherham manager Paul Warne], I’m pleased for him because it’s great for him, it’s done him a whole world of good, I would imagine, in terms of him getting the job, keeping the job and for positives for next season.”
"
McCarthy was pleased with Dean Gerken’s performance and penalty save: “There’s never a bad one, is there? It was a really good save, he’s a good keeper. He was ready to play.

“Bart has been brilliant this season, and pretty much a lot of that is down to Gerks because of the way they train, the way they work together. He gives him a lot to think about.

“He’s got to be on his toes, he’s got to play well, if he doesn’t Gerks comes in and he does that. He’s done nothing wrong, Gerks.

“He’s been pretty much a big part of how Bart’s played. And, of course, he’s come in and done well having not played in however long. He looked as if he’d played last week and the week before. He was very good.”

Millers boss Warne was pleased that his side had ended a run of 17 games without a victory, having been given the manager's job on a permanent basis earlier this month.

“It’s obviously nice to win a football match, it’s nice to keep a clean sheet, which is obviously important," he said.

“Ironically in the last four games since I’ve had the job, while the effort was there, I didn’t think we had as much quality as in the other three.

“I think that just shows what football’s like in the Championship. In the other games I think we deserved more points, we didn’t get them.

“Today, I’m not saying we didn’t deserve to win, but I could have seen the game go in any way.

“I’ve told the players I’m really proud of them the way they kept a clean sheet and got over the finishing line but I think they have to believe in themselves a bit more because they’ve got more to give.”

Sorry but what is it that people see in Dozzel that I dont? He is nowhere near good enough and never has been.

Yesterday the headline read "Town Visit Rotherham With a Spring in Their Step". Except he changes damn near the entire team. So what spring? Pathetic result and shows us the backup players aren't good enough. Fitting end to the season.

A reasonable explanation but as usual on here very little balance from posters which is why most supporters ignore TWTD.

with 9 changes ( basically our reserves), it was always going to be a disjointed performance with players unfamiliar with the arch others play against a Millers "team".

What it does indicate to MM is many if the peripheral players are either , not ready fir the step up ( Dozzell), or simply not good enough. Gerkin looked safe in goal and made a great penalty save. His goal kicking is light years better than Bart's. I don't think he kicked a single dead ball out of play.

Emmanuel, looked off the pace at times, whilst Kenlock continu s to impress. Knudsen shouldn't get within a country mile of the left back shirt ahead of Kenlock next season.

Rowe grew in confidence as the game wore on, and will be a great player for us next season. He us very quick, puts in a good testing cross, and defends back very well.

Bishop and Dozzell in midfield, failed to make any impression. Even with "Dave" in the middle with them to add a bit of physical presence, they failed to control and orchestrate the midfield at any time. What the hell has happened to Bishop?? A mere shadow of the player that burst onto the first team scene just a couple of seasons ago. Or is he just overrated?

Pitman could be arsed half the time and to be fair to the front line they had very little service all afternoon. Controversial for many on here I realise, but for me Smith just looks a basic, ordinary defender, and not a CB that I'd pair with Webster best season. If we are to be serious contenders a better CB than Smith needs to be found to pair with Webster. The ideal player , if only he could stay fit, would be Taylor. But I doubt he has that fitness in him. Like so many potentially "great" players, they often cannot stay mad change fit. Maybe we should be adding Bishop to that list now?

A poor game for the Town faithful, and as Chambo's applause matched with a shoulder shrug at the end, it was a typical case of after the Lord Mayor's show today.

Bring on the Owls next Saturday and our more usual first team, with Rowe in for Lawrence, and Berra in for Smith.

You really do take the pist mick the stubborn you fail to give any real praise to the players that played yet you big up a proper bloke your mate Douglas he may be fit but that's cause he doesn't run anywhere and if that was a back handed comment about the youth not being fit enough surely that'd be your responsibility to have got them fitter in the first place oh and play the players in their correct positions you stubborn man you wasted half a season playing 4or 5 players out of position you will never change time to go please

Give the man a break !
You wanted to see Bishop , Dozell , Emanuel given a chance , we still had Chambers , Smith , Kenlock , Diagouraga , Pitman out there . Reckon we all still thought we could win this at 3pm today. Mick made it clear on Thursday what his intentions were .
Now it's , oh no , you've made too many changes .
Note to Marcus Evans - When selecting our next manager , no need to look further than this forum.
We've a multitude of experts who know better , could pick a better line-up , employ better tactics etc. etc.
See you next August Mick . There's still plenty of Ipswich Town Supporters willing to give you our Support !! COYB. !!!

ArnieM makes some salient points here. I don't feel Dozzell is ready to step up either and alongside Bishop they both looked very ordinary. Emmanuel simply beaten far too often and was only saved by some good goal-keeping by Gerken. Rotherham started to exploit our right side and we couldn't keep up with the pace. Huge opportunity for some of our fringe players but they didn't step up. Rowe best outfielder and Gerken MoM for me, but some God awful school boy defending. Could have and should have been worse. Shows what we have in reserve. Kenlock should keep his LB position into next season.

To understand why MM did what he did,i'd refer to the comments he's previously made,i.e.ITFC needs a clear out and new players to come in.The Rotherham game was an assessment of who can fill the boots of players on the hit-list to go and,in turn, show who can't fill those boots and where replacements are needed. In other words,MM is compiling his redundancy list.It happens in Companies every day and ITFC is a Business like any other.I may not have liked the result but i understand the plan.

Promised to give players a game. Gave them one. Gave them a **** one.

Why? Because we so poor we only just safe now and heaven forbid he put Ipswich first for final 3 games......no, we have to do right by the other Clubs......just in case he might be their next manager I suppose.

At least with Sheepshanks, Burley, Magilton (not to mention legends of the past) the people that ran our Club, loved our Club, and always put IT not THEM first.

geminimustang. I'm glad somebody on here realised why the team was as it was today. Why do all these Mick haters have to jump on every word without looking at the bigger picture. Its clearout time folks and this was the only opportunity to assess the players in a game situation, it couldn't have been done before because every one was too worried about the dreaded drop. Back the guy, see if it works.

Mick is no mug. Making 9 changes was unlikely to produce a match-winning team, we all know that from past experience in cup games. So why did he do it? IMO he was sending a message to each of the following (1) the players who he brought in for the day - are you good enough to knock on my door and demand a chance in my team? (2) the owner - give me some money or this is where we will end up (3) the fans - I am still 100% in charge and I can do whatever I want without getting sacked.

I think that the fans that travelled to Rotherham are entitled to their money back. They went to Rotherham to see the 1st team play but ended up with 9 changes basically 2nd team which is not acceptable. Absolute disgrace mick should be ashamed of himself this wasn't a cup game so what the he'll is he doing.

MEET THE FOCKERS...

AND "FOCKERS" US **OBJECTIVE** ITFC FANS --- WHO ARE ABSOLUTELY CRUCIAL, AND IN PRINCIPAL JUST AS MUCH AS THE **SUBJECTIVE & COMPLACENT** FANS!, HAVE CONTRIBUTED TO THE MERE CONTINUING EXISTENCE OF THIS HERE ONCE PROUD & REVERED CLUB THROUGHOUT THE LONG BARREN TIMES INCLUDING ALSO THE YEAR OF THE LORD 2017! --- SOOOO SURELY ARE, RIGHT??? :-) rofl

(Hmmm perhaps the unequivocally laaaarge Anti-Current-Regime fraction among our fans should really seriously consider starting a rogue party/fan club for & among themselves and call it... ehmmmm... ehmmmm ... ehmmm... ehmmm...'UNITED FOCKERS AGAINST THE INEPT & IMPUDENT DINO McCARTHY'??? :-) lol)

Anyone remember the late Charles Haughey, former "Taoiseach of Ireland"?
Well of course all you adults do! lol So what does ol Charles aka "The Boss" and our on a much smaller scale beloved football club's current emphatically megalomaniacal "gaffer" the Dino McCarthy have in common then??? HiHiHiHi

Well they are obviosly both Irish, and ehmmm awesome Irish "gentlemen" :-) at that I might add! Cause among a whole bunch of hmmm **dubious** personal traits & things they are imho also mostly both known as: Extremely foulmouthed, extremely stubborn, extremely unscrupulous, extremely arrogant ... and what do you know? extremely greedy and/or Pesos fixated too!!! (However it has to be said that Mr. Haughey, who throughout his career refused to sincerely answer any questions about how he financed his blatantly extravagant lifestyle on a government salary?!, unlike Mr. McCarthy repeatedly was directly & knowingly crooked in this regard of "greediness", as both common history, post career trials & later research has shown or strongly indicated) .... but ohhhh mayhaps last but certainly not least both of them just luuuuv to refer to their perceived "enemies" or simply people who oppose them and their dispositions as: "FOCKERS"!!!

---- Thus I never forget particularly the following tidbit from a televised RTE interview from the mid 80's (I think) where the Fianna Fail Bossman among a whole bunch of expletives very smirkingly said this as the ending of his longer answer to a question about What aspect of Ireland or Irish society angers him the most?:

"I COULD INSTANCE A LOAD OF **FOCKERS** WHOSE THROATS I'D CUT AND PUSH OVER THE NEAREST CLIFFS, BUT THERE IS NO PERCENTAGE IN THAT!!!"

Aye , these 2 jolly Irish fellas indeed have a whole truckload of unmistakable negative & heinous 'thinking' in common if you ask me! :(

Otherwise I like to state that I completely agree with all those posters who have implied that the APPARENT one & only reason as to why the Dino went totally overboard with this for loooong ongoing and very fair call for: "Let's get SOME of them youngster and fringe players a decent chance" ...and thus subsequently changed 9!, repeat 9!, players from Monday's easily best ITFC performance of the season .... was basically JUST to once again show 2 fingers up to us the fans --- whom he so eagerly nowadays refers to as FOCKERS of course! -- especially the travelling ones, as making so many changes at once was undebataly DOOMED to fail, aye even against a team as bad as Rotherham who btw have conceded nearly 100 goals this campaign!, all for the singular purpose of afterwards (although the performance apparently was worse and more tame than even he could have imagined beforehand!) indirectly telling us the fans: "See, TOLD U SO!!! Them youngsters or fringe players are by & large either not ready or not good enough! Alas I the self-perceived football genius (who of course is constantly preoccupied with padding myself on the back in the very slightly alarming 'Delusion of Granduer' mental disorder fashion btw!) was right all along ... as I very very very very obviously ALWAYS is! Period end of story!".

I also completely agrees with the likes of @Lightningboy who wrote that it is both mind-boggling and overly shameful that the local TWTD poll of "MM in / MM out" changed a full 10+% since Monday in favor of "MM in"... just based on 1 freaking game!!! Our only win (and one that quite importantly was truly a deserving win unlike a few other slightly recent semi-similarities that springs to mind!) over a current real good and/ top league side in EONS!!!!!!!!!!!!
And btw why should the Dino be giving soooo much credit for that win & performance btw, when plenty of his head-buried-in-the-sand worshippers for loooong have posted week in week out but particularly during our 1-win-in-14 run (which would have resulted in a managerial resignation or else a firing ANYWHERE else but at Marvelous Marcus's ultra cozy & unambitious ITFC!!!) that when we fail to win or simply hugely disappoint as a team it's in their very skewed opinion: Not really their perceived guru the Dino's fault but ALL them poor players fault as the vast majority incl. even some of the 'Favorites' quote = "are/were not good enough"???!!!
Ehmmm dear MM worshipppers you can't really have it both ways. I.E. when we pick up an in this Day & Age fairly rare, repeat rare, win and one against a DECENT and none-dysfunctional opposition mind you! according to you then the woefully 1-dimensional, favorizing and often tactically inept Dino should immediately be showered in LOTS of credit & accolades .... However when we are poor or flop or rather simpler put :Are not worth most fans' time nor har earned money!!!, he the great Dino is more or less blameless and should thus basically inferred be exonerated of any accusations coming his way???!!!
EVEN though his football mindset, his tactical outlook is more or less the same in 90% of league games .....UNLESS his hand is forced of course! :-) As it to some degree was even against mighty Newcastle (whom as rarely mentioned, despite them looking not very mighty and 2nd best on the day, quite possibly could have changed the whole unfolding of that game had Matt Ritchie not miscued his header with a GAPING goal at his mercy just before we eventually went ahead in thanks & originated by yet another mistake by him!) due to first and foremost the unavailability of a couple of his dear favorites ((Knudsen obviously & but probably also the ' In a different class' + "example to all young players" Douglas IF the Dino could get 'Away with' playing him with the majority of the fans!) and thus the usual accompanying favorit uncreative and/or hedgehog system and round-pegs-in-square-holes fetich etc etc., plus of course and exactly like against Burton (where btw please do remember 2 of MM's most adored former 'proper blokes', i.e. broher Ridge & brother Kights, serious grave miscues had a large hand in us winning) we again simply needed more points to be absolutely save from relegation without having to rely on other teams below us screwing up!

Alas as I have sarcastically implied before: Suffolk County MUST so without any humorous question whatsoever be quite instrumental in emphatically dragging the United Kingdoms' "Average IQ" level way down! :( ... and then of course add to that fact the very well known & well documented awesome fickle-mindedness and utter complacency of Suffolk or East Anglian folks IN GENERAL! Bvrrrrdddd!!!
So imho your pathetic "wonderful" worshipping 'lot' fundamentally DESERVES Mick McCarthy! ...and all the negativity and lack of entertainment etc. that come with him as 'The Boss'! .... But me personally well I'm immensely proud (but also hurting of course!) to sticking 100% to my earlier in the year invoked boycott!
And I'm more than ever now in light of what the Dino has done and said just this last month definitively DONE with the this ultra obnoxious & never-changing arrogant clown (read: Complete travesty of a honest, fan-respecting & 'Modern Day' + daring-to-go-for-the-win football manager) just as I'm DONE with the rest of the current regime!!!

I will thus in all seriousness after 40+ years of following ITFC, next go and root for St. Albans in the National League South! .... or else some local 'Voluptuous women over 40' water polo team .... UNTIL at least MM and his prehistoric sidekick TC are gone! ... and though I seriously doubt we will play anywhere near as poorly and fan-deterring and incapable of winning in the next season (the latter provided perennial MOTM King Bart is still here though!), transfer funds or no transfer funds, but imho especially alarming even with transfer funds as MM although he must by now be 200% fully aware what the fans DONT want for their money & time, undoubtedly just continue this tactical Gong-Ho with draws = "setup-not-to-lose" ways + invest as well as pick to start the same mostly sorely lacking in either entertainment or skill TYPE of grinding defensive-minded 'proper blokes' .... and to exaggerate a bit we could imho in theory buy Lionel Messi and the like and the Dino would soooon find a way to A) either more or less ruin him and his confidence or else B) wind up putting him in his feared 'Doghouse' a la the apparently disillusioned with the tactics and very open-mouthed Leon "He will NEVER play for me again" Best or a bunch of other offensive-minded or mostly creative players who went before him here at ITFC during the last 4+ predominantly excruciating Zzzz & fan-deterring dinosauric years!

So it's 'Hasta La Vista' folks, your TWTD part-time Court Jester :-) is going on a indefinite Siesta as I've simply 'HAD IT' with not just about all the silly spin & certified BS! but really with everything else Ipswich Town FC, for this 2016/2017 season (which also depressingly shows every indication of NOT being the dreaded Dino's last here!) at least! ... And additionally also not only with a substantial number of TWTD's "esteemed" but unfathomable beyond 'thick' + for me personally severely blood-pressure-rising members! .... but also too frequently with the ehmmm "journalistic standard" purported here, while being informative also imho sadly continues is in recent years MERRY kiss-a@s way of A) partly poorly disguised bias and subjectivity (which to some degree might be understandable if this were a REAL newspaper being run as a business!) ....and B) partly but even more worrying also too often apparent cherry-picking in it's new coverage or if that's not the case then very "strange" focuses and semi-censored contains of the actual news contains and statements itself! ---- And in that same regard I'm sorry to inform you that well-known ITFC & local sport journalist Stuart Watson, whether you like him and his style or not, seemingly had a sort of reprimand or maybe an ehmmm direct call from his superiors telling him to quite SUDDENLY no longer write any Dino quotes on his personal twitter account???!!! or as he himself wrote yesterday: "No Mick McCarthy quotes on here! In case accused of being 'out of context'! Rather keep an eye on @EADT24 and @ipswichstar24 sites..." ---- SWELL!!! Ah did anyone just say: Sean "Savant" Spicer advocated 'Trumptism' in the local UK media?! :-) smile :-) Hmmm and so I wonder who might very possibly have instigated that little change in Mr. Watson's daily and weekly paid journalistic work & coverage of ITFC. :( :( :( :(

You have made us a laughing stock over the past 12 months. You treat us fans with contempt and you talk like we owe you a debt of gratitude. YOU get paid for doing your job and over the past year you have clearly not earned your salary. Yet you carry on not giving a damn about anything or anyone but yourself and your 'proper blokes'. I have followed this club for 40 plus years and I have never felt this way about a manager before.
Your smug face and the way you speak about the fans and your laid back 'i don't give a damn' body language makes me sick to my stomach.

Golden rule - don't change a winning side. However if you want to introduce changes do it from the bench. It's a pretty basic rule, whenever we have large scale changes we lose - even against a non-league side.

martin587 added 09:52 - Apr 23
When you make nine team changes it is obvious that the team will not gel and it was proved correct. You were never going to get the best out of these players as they were all struggling to find their own identity.
Yes,I was at the game and for most of it,or should I say all of it they ran around like headless chickens and know disrespect to them but they seemed lost.
Some were played out of position and were made to look bad by the inept plan laid out by an inept manager.
You cannot make nine team team changes and expect a team to play well and run like a well oiled engine.
The result was irrelevant, but so many changes,I give up.And yes as a poster said" we should all get our money refunded for going.
