McCarthy: Trialist French Not Out of Place Alongside Our Younger Pros Monday, 14th Aug 2017 18:04 Blues boss Mick McCarthy says AFC Sudbury defender Tyler French hasn’t looked out of place alongside the younger professionals in his squad. The 18-year-old played the full 90 minutes for the U23s as they came from behind to beat Crewe 3-2 at Playford Road this afternoon. “He’s tall and slim and athletic and when he’s on the pitch he can use the ball, he’s a decent defender,” McCarthy said of French, who also had a spell on trial with the Blues last season. “He’s not looked out of place with our younger pros, so we’re just having a look to see how we do with him.” McCarthy believes it’s important to keep an eye on local non-league so as not to miss out on those with the ability to play at a higher level. “He’s already been and had trials elsewhere,” McCarthy continued, French having recently had a stint with Leicester City and a try-out at Crystal Palace last season. “He’s very capable but whether he's going to push for a first-team place, that’s another matter.”
