Town Draw Sheffield United at Home in FA Cup
Monday, 4th Dec 2017 19:15

Town have drawn Sheffield United at home in the third round of the FA Cup. The Blues were first out of the hat during this evening's draw.

The Blades are currently fourth in the Championship and beat the Blues 1-0 at Bramall Lane in October.

Town and the South Yorkshiremen last met in the FA Cup in Sheffield at the fourth round stage in January 2003 when the home side won a classic 4-3.

The sides also faced one another in the fourth round in 1998 when they drew 1-1 at Portman Road and the Blades won the replay 1-0 at Bramall Lane.

Prior to that the teams clashed in their only previous third round tie at Portman Road in January 1974 when the Blues won 3-2.

Ties will be played over the weekend of Saturday 6th January with any replays that are required taking place in the week commencing Monday 15th January.

Blues boss Mick McCarthy is still to win an FA Cup tie since taking over at Town in November 2012 with the Blues’ last victory in the tournament the 2-1 third round victory at Blackpool back in January 2010 during Roy Keane’s time in charge.

Last season Town were embarrassingly beaten 1-0 at the third round stage by then-Vanarama National League side Lincoln City in a replay at Sincil Bank.

Uninspiring draw not going to attract a decent crowd unfortunately. Given that McCarthy doesn't give a toss about the cup how about the owner letting season ticket holders have their seats for free.

I love Third Round Saturday had some great and not so great days but come on town fans some of you sound so unhappy. A very lucky away win against Wolves many years ago led to our first semi final a perfectly good goal for Bristol Rovers would have knocked us out in 78. You have be in it to win it and our team can beat anyone bar a few on its day and that's why I love the cup.

....... at least at home - however, likely outcome 1-1 - and lose in the replay. Another run possibility gone.

We can but hope though for a positive outcome from being drawn at home - play to WIN, and who knows... ?

.......... I hope some people on here get a Dictionary for Xmas - in doing so, hopefully will become more aware of the difference between so called 'moaning' and having / voicing an 'opinion'.

There for the learning - for those who choose to.

What are the chances of being pulled out first with the same ball number two years on the trot. Spooky!

Think we'd all like to see the first team in action for this one, but I have a feeling it will be:

Gerken
The Wolf, Fowler, Webber, Kenlock
Rowe, Downes, Nydam, Drinan
Moore, Morris (with Folami on as sub).

Go for it !!!! Mick McCarthy surely has to get the lads up for this one. That will make up for all the previous crap games we have played and lost in recent years. Come on Ipswich !!!!!!!!!!!

No chance of seeing Moore....cup tied.

Agree with ArnieM regarding this draw....just hope we can sneak a 1-0 and get a big gun in the 4th round.

Expect both teams to rest a lot of players for this one. Our second team still looks strong. Both sides will feel its winnable. At least its at home but pretty underwhelming draw.

Not Sheff Yawnutd! Was hoping for something more exotic like Spurs away. Wonder what chance of us putting a proper team out. If the ticket prices are right might be tempted by this one even if we probably won't play a full strength team. That said perhaps Sheff Yawnutd might rest a few given they are well in the promotion hunt still so might make for an interesting match up even if there were far more glamorous games to be had. Norwich got a golden ticket but although a help to their finances it might also come at the cost of humiliation before the nation! :-)

Well said pragmatic - FFS lets be more positive - we are on good form now and one place off play - offs. Things are on the up at the moment - long may it continue. Man.U in Round 4.

We owe the 'Scum of the North' one.

Moderately decent draw: much better than Dagenham and Redbridge or whatever away, not as exciting as a PL team. But we are at home, and we should really go out and try to win this. Round 4, and dare I dream, Round 5 might turn up something really exciting.

The only way McCarthy will go for it is if there is a bonus for him attached.

it would be encouraging to see a cup run for a change, but somehow, something tells me it aint going to happen... For once, I hope to be proved horribly wrong.
