Middlesbrough Targeting Waghorn
Friday, 29th Jun 2018 13:38

TWTD understands Middlesbrough are keen to take Blues striker Martyn Waghorn back to the North-East this summer and are among a number of Championship clubs eyeing a move for the 28-year-old.

Waghorn joined Town from Rangers for a bargain £200,000 last August and enjoyed a hugely successful first season at Portman Road.

The South Shields-born frontman was the Blues' top scorer with 16 goals and also picked up 11 assists. No one else in the Championship was directly involved in more goals.

The former Sunderland, Leicester and Wigan man’s form with Town didn’t go unnoticed elsewhere in the Championship and we understand Tony Pulis wants to add the ex-England U21 international to his Boro squad ahead of 2018/19.

Birmingham City are also among those to have been keeping tabs on Waghorn, who is contracted to Town until the summer of 2019 with the club having an option for a further year, along with Nottingham Forest, who were linked last week.

Whether the Blues would be willing to part with one of their most highly prized assets, who quickly became a fans’ favourite after moving to Suffolk, remains to be seen.

However, new boss Paul Hurst evidently wants to put his stamp on the squad and Town have already shown that they are willing to allow senior players to move on if an acceptable offer is received, Adam Webster having joined Bristol City for an initial £3.5 million rising to £8 million yesterday.

Webster’s departure and the exit of youngster Ben Knight to Manchester City for just over £1 million, which is set to be confirmed in the next few days with the fee agreed and permission from the Premier League for the move to go through granted, means the Blues are under no pressure to sell and they would almost certainly want a very significant sum for one of last season’s top Championship performers.

£15 million is the minimum. Shouldn't be sold really though but couldn't turn down £15m.

Seriously we have the whip hand with Waggy due to his contract. No way must he be sold - only he and Bart would be anywhere near Burleys superb promotion winning team.

He is an asset. As with all assets, it will come down to price.

If Waghorn wants out or an exceptional offer comes in then there's jack we can do about it. With his goals and assists it's going to be nigh on impossible to replace him. Fingers and just about everything crossed he stays.

The vast majority of posters, myself included, wanted a young ambitious manager to inject the club with new ideas and fresh blood.

And although this is probably just talk at present, let's not worry about who comes and goes.

Very disappointed about losing the young lad to City but from what I can make of things, Hurst is targeting young players with ambition and a point to prove.

As written by a fellow poster on a different story, if you want to finish 12th next season, keep the same players.

Hurst is building HIS team now and hopefully Evans will release a decent amount of money for him to do this. I did post a month or two ago that after the Keane/Jewell fiasco, perhaps he was ready to have another gamble now the pain of throwing all that money away is slowly subsidising?

Optimistic for the umpteenth season in a row, as I am about England's chances of winning the world cup.

At the age of 43, am I allowed to apply for Brazilian citizenship and change my allegiance to Real Madrid?

I'm afraid that some of you folk have been SO f*cked-up by the World According to MM that you now refuse to see past the end of your nose. Hurst clearly knows what he's doing. Just wait and see for Gawd's sake!

Hurst may be young and ambitious, but if he seriously thinks he can just out Waghorn ,[and I fear Bart although latter would be appealing to ME ] I think I would add deluded. Ive been thinking Hurst is getting some decent players that would provide better service to our front men , if we lose Waggy and Bart I would give up on Town ,clearly no ambition

Boro do one unless you want to pay £15 mill plus, get your own players . Marcus this will be one big mistake. Your credibility will drop like a stone. You have done well up to now, if you sell him you will be hated by the fans. Please no unless it's for a massive fee upfront

Please why are we having a fire sale? If me sells he has to give the money to PH TO GET US to the promised land

Wouldn't be very happy with this unless it's for silly money!

When ME took over I feared it would no longer be ITFC and it would be all about ME it seemed to be to be the case, then he surfaced [post MM] looking like he had seen the light and hope was renewed, however, if we lose our ''aces'' it will be the end of my support [over 50 years]

This is so simple. Every player has his price. All Evans needs to do is slapped a price of £20m on Waghorns head and see if Middlesborough are serious.

If Maddison is worth £24m then Waghorn is not far behind.

Personally I can see this happening especially as his parents are now living down here. But you never know in football. No player has any loyalty it is all about the money so time will tell.

This guy must not be sold. During the course of a very dismal season, he was one of the few reasons for hope. At the end of the day, money will be the final decider, but for once can common sense prevail, and this approach be firmly rebuffed

NO !!! Please no. Not even for £15Mn plus Grant Leadbitter. (I only put his name in for a laugh, although with this story I have lost my sense of humour)

Evans will sell him. No doubt. Happens every time we have an asset apart from McGoldrick who was the one we should have sold!!

airliner added 18:42 - Jun 29
No this is a step too far , unless PH has 3 strikers ready to step in. Which he does not. This will be so bad if me sells him. Stop and think properly Marcus we will
Be another Reading , no decent strike force. We all know you support Chelsea and have no interest in Ipswich. Please just sell up if you are going to kill the club by selling anybody that can score goals

Webster sale initially was considered a bad move but happy to see that some investment will be made. Waghorn though is a team to build on and his sale would be stupid

£3m+ would be good business - nota statement of no ambition. We didn't sell McG for £10m - lesson learnt.
