Town Eyeing Shrews Defender Beckles
Thursday, 19th Jul 2018 12:36

TWTD understands Town are eyeing a move for defender Omar Beckles, who is currently with Paul Hurst’s former club Shrewsbury.

The 26-year-old is primarily a centre-half but spent much of last season playing at left-back in the absence of the injured Junior Brown.

Speaking on Saturday, Blues boss Hurst confirmed he was after two centre-halves following the departure of Adam Webster to Bristol City.

Blackpool’s Curtis Tilt was recently the subject of a £550,000 Town offer but the Seasiders are targeting a £1 million for the 26-year-old with Rangers now believed to be keen. Discussions between the clubs are understood to be continuing.

Hurst interest in his Shrewsbury players has been widely expected with another centre-half Toto Nsiala also believed to be someone the new Town manager has considered recruiting from the Shrews, while midfielder Jon Nolan has been linked on a number of occasions.

Having spent time with Millwall as a youngster, Leytonstone-born Beckles, who is contracted to the Shrews until the summer of 2020, joined the Glenn Hoddle Academy in Spain during which time he played for locally-based lower league side Jerez Industrial.

Spells back in English non-league with Boreham Wood (twice), Kettering, Billericay, Histon, Margate, AFC Hornchurch, St Albans City and Aldershot followed before he broke into the EFL with Accrington Stanley in 2016/17.

After one season in League Two Hurst took the 6ft 3in tall central defender up a division to Shrewsbury, where he made 43 starts and four sub appearances, scoring three goals as the Shropshire side reached the League One play-offs during 2018/19 having finished third.

If PH is serious about Tilt stop messing about and bring him in and if he's available on loan, Carter-Vickers...job done.

Also don't think Waghorn will go, but maybe the Agent is fishing for a salary increase. Probably be worth it long term.

Wonder who he's got in mind to replace McGoldrick?

Good to see that PH is getting involved in all levels at the Club including recruitment.

We have kept Bart on an impressive new contract. We want and hope to keep Waghorn. We can't do those things and also splash out on transfers as well. We must trust Hurst that any players he brings in he believes can do a good job here. Why would he sign players who he didn't think were good enough? Ultimately the cost would be his job.

Beckles is a beast just like N'siala. Out of the two would prefer N'siala but Beckles is decent.

Thought he looked poor watching the play-off final (I know only one game) the Rotherham captain Richard Wood made him look very average. On that showing not for me, is he any better than Webster? I doubt it very much.

As I have said on here before , my godson plays in the first X1 for Shrewsbury and have seen a fair bit of them last year . Backless played nearly all season at left back due to injuries and looked like an awkward 6'3" CB playing there. He reminds me of a certain Mr Sonko under PJ. Not Webster by any stretch . But if the budget is tight we aren't going to be able to get a BMW. It may be a long season but let's hope not . Good luck Mr Hurst . We are all behind you .

Almost EVERY football player is a potentially good player (to name but a few - Mark Fish), but question is, at what level & position? If its not Championship or above, we should simply either consider their potential, or move on and let them find their own level. We cant afford to be a charity. Slightly concerned we're creating a Shrewsbury 2.0 with all these lower league signings.

With all due respect to you lot judging omar over one game I believe Paul Hurst may just be a tad better at judging the quality of the player he has worked with every day for a year.
I watched him play multiple times last season (I live in Shrewsbury) and he is definitely a decent player and would fit into our squad as a cover CB in my opinion but really Paul Hurst knows exactly how good he is and his potential
