Blackpool Boss: Town Couldn't Agree Tilt Fee
Thursday, 9th Aug 2018 16:10

Interim Blackpool manager Terry McPhillips has confirmed that Town were unable to agree a fee with his club for long-time target Curtis Tilt.

“The latest that I know is that they couldn’t agree a fee," he told the Blackpool Gazette, who say the Blues’ final offer for 27-year-old Tilt, who handed in a transfer request last week, reached £850,000.

"That’s all I know, I might get to find out more but I don’t know of any other clubs interested.

“Curtis is a fantastic lad. He’s a terrific pro. He’s only been in league football for one season. He had a year at Wrexham in the Conference and before that he was playing further down in the non-league pyramid. So to come in and do what he did last year is nothing short of outstanding.

“The lad obviously wants to better himself and play at a higher level, but I can’t speak any higher of Tilty.

“My only surprise is that more clubs haven’t come in from the Championship. It’s really surprised me.

“If you’re any good at scouting, there’s an obvious one at the pitch at Bloomfield Road. “He’s as quick as Des Walker, he’s really competitive and he’s got better and better with the football. He’s a winner.”

Blues boss Paul Hurst confirmed that another central defender remains top of his wish-list at his press conference with Luke Woolfenden set for a spell on the sidelines with a knee problem.

“I think that’s an obvious position,” he said. “Luke went for a scan, with knees you’re always thinking the worst but he could be out for six weeks, so we’re realistically back to the position we were in with two recognised centre-backs.

“I know I didn’t start Luke last week and we have got one or two ways around it, but it’s not ideal and I would certainly prefer a more specialist person to create competition with Luke and Toto.”

It's easy to spend other people's money but I can't believe ME has not got this one over the line, of all targets I thought this one was banker due to our lack of out and out cbs. Don't for 1 minute blame Blackpool as I wish we could've done same with waghorn. With Woolfenden now out I can see us regretting this.Has been a very productive window but I would have signed Tilt above any one of our signings bar Edwards.

I agree with the club on this----why should be held to a ransom by a chairman who we know has got "form".

I blame him completely and feel sorry for the player.

Perhaps we may get him on loan?

If Hurst identified his key targets and they're not being signed sealed and delivered over the sake of chicken feed (£150k is chicken feed in the modern game) then we need to consider he might already be feeling a little frustrated by not being backed to the hill during his honeymoon period. When we do the maths for the sponsorship money, Waghorn sale, international money, sale of youngsters to Man City and Arsenal, surely even with annual deficit there was enough to pay another £150k for Tilt at least. I don't think it would of tilted us (pardon the pun!) over the edge! The wage bill is surely no more than it was last year (perhaps even less) with all the players we've let go including a relatively big earner like DmG. And it pains me to think that we can't even beat off Wigan from signing a player that might of given us a much bigger attacking edge than we have already. I'm still relatively happy with the transfer business but I feel like we've missed a big opportunity to put the icing on the cake and if you want to go far you have to go those extra few miles in this game. Paul Hurst's transfer targets were still relatively modest when you compare our business compared to most of our rivals in this league, I think Marcus could of made a real statement of intent and gone the whole hog and got Tilt and Windass in as well. Still relatively happy overall but I do wonder if behind the scenes Hurst is a little peeved about not getting 1 or 2 of his targets. If Jackson or Harrison gets a long-term injury or one of them doesn't settle, we could really regret not having a Windass as another attacking option. And we all know we're looking a bit thin at the back with Woolfenden out for 6 weeks. The guy from Wimbledon (if we get him) might be able to do a job but he clearly wasn't Hurst's first choice.

Sometimes these things happen.
It's like buying a house, the seller wants £x amount, the buyer tries to get the house at a price he thinks it is worth and they can't agree a price.

Also, it's not just a question of the fee, agents fees etc could be based on a percentage of the fee, so these increase as well...

Time to move on, get a loan with a view to a permanent move.

ME runs a very tight ship and obviously won't be held to sansom.Tilt is not the only CB. We just have to move on and find similar elsewhere. We have cover in The interim so I'm sure all will be resolved over the next few weeks.
Let's just look forward to this Saturday.

Actually, I don't mind us holding our horses until January, when we can see where we are. PH will then have a better idea of where we need to strengthen. We do have some kind of backline cover in a crisis: Spence as centre back; Knudsen as centre with Kenlock in as left back; Donacien as centre, with Spence as right back; maybe Edun left back, etc. Let's wait and see how we get on. Maybe we'll get Tilt on the cheap too.
