Hurst: Even Evans Surprised By Extent of Summer Changes
Wednesday, 5th Sep 2018 17:11

Blues boss Paul Hurst says even owner Marcus Evans was surprised by the changes made to the squad over the summer with 12 players having come in, while Martyn Waghorn, Adam Webster and Joe Garner were among last season's regulars to depart, the likes of David McGoldrick and Luke Hyam having moved on at the end of last season.

New loanees Jordan Graham, Jon Walters and Matthew Pennington came in last week ahead of Friday’s loan deadline, while Tristan Nydam (St Johnstone), Luke Woolfenden (Swindon), Ben Morris (Forest Green) and Josh Emmanuel (Shrewsbury) moved out on loan to gain experience with Chris Smith (Aldershot), Pat Webber (Braintree) and Aaron Drinan (Sutton) all already on loan.

“We can concentrate on the squad we have going forward now until January,” Hurst told the club site.

“I can remember talking to Marcus and saying what I was hoping to do and I think he was quite shocked and was thinking, ‘that is for another time’.

“It’s about me wanting to put my stamp on things I guess and we have done more than what he first thought.

“Whenever there has been a possibility we have looked at it and it has been a busy time. Certainly outgoing, it has provided the most opportunities for players to go out on loan that I’ve been involved with and I think Marcus felt the same and we took advantage of that where we felt it was right.”

Hurst could yet make one further addition to his squad with former West Ham central defender James Collins having joined the squad for training yesterday, as TWTD revealed.

According to some reports today, another of the Welshman’s previous clubs, Aston Villa, could also show interest in the free agent.

I'm surprised at the amount of changes...some might be for the good but truly don't believe BOTH Garner and Waghorn going was a good 'change'.

Hurst just winds me up. He talks more rubbish than mick. He should keep his gob shut and come up with a plan to get us out of this mess. To-date the football is atrocious. No creativity. No idea how to defend corners or set pieces. Inexperience signed and now we are after experience. The transfer policy was an utter shambles - don't get me started on Tilt or Donacien. Strikers have no confidence. Edwards is related to Charles Charlie Charles one of the famous Charles brothers with his one favourite trick but cannot cross.

And yet, there are so many positive souls. When you cannot beat Rotherham or a very poor Norwich side you know we have problems.

PH - sort it out . Now.

I see Hyam is injured. Played 45 mins of the first game, went off injured and hasn't featured since.

My word there is some complete rubbish spouted on this forum these days and it's tedious! There was a huge call for change, it's happened in both the management and the squad. Collins would be a decent addition for the experience. It's time to get behind the team now. I'm actually enjoying the football more now and looking forward to seeing it develop as PH makes his mark. I perhaps agree that PH should have initiated his policy of change a bit more slowly and a bit less drastically. In trying to make an impression, he has tried a bit too hard too soon. But I really like the guy, and I like many aspects of his brand such as his straightforwardness regarding selection and his connection with the fans. I also think he seems to be willing to modify his approach (i.e. bring in some more experience) if things seem not to be working out as planned. Some things are right and some things may still come right. I wouldn't say Nolan is out of his depth, for example. And as for Graham, the guy hasn't played properly for ages, so let's not judge him on one appearance. Nsiala looks a good acquisition, and Edwards will be when he learns to get rid of the ball at the appropriate moment (and maybe gets more support to help him do so). I don't think we will rip up any trees this season, but the first important aim is not to get stranded at the bottom of the table. After that, I hope we can slowly begin to turn things around, and maybe have a bit more fun on the way than we had after Mick's tenure soured. Mick was also fun at the start, but in the end we had to change, so this is the New Us until further notice. Let's get behind that idea.

Will people please realise that Waghorn quote PH "didn't want to play for ITFC" unquote.
When someone doesn't fancy working for you, what's the point in them staying.
Dog: You are a bit of a nugget aren't you! May I suggest you look up the word 'patience' in OED?
Sunday was bad, but we all have to believe it will get better!

Therein61 Snowflake is a neologistic term used to characterize the young adults of the 2010s as being more prone to taking offence and less resilient than previous generations, or as being too emotionally vulnerable to cope with views that challenge their own.

Agree with sentiments of our troubles being self-inflicted:-
1. too many changes too soon - too many loan players in (Graham ?), & jury still out on majority of League 1 players (Nolan, Roberts, 2 strikers who havn't had a shot on target yet).
2. not giving the youngsters/academy a chance - nearly all sent out on loan.
3. Selling Waghorn & Garner - who scored 26 goals last season between them.
Championship Survival is already the name of the game.

Therein61 MM was only as foul mouthed as the numbskull fans who screamed obscenities
at him from the terraces then reacted when he treated them as they treated him Snowflakes.

And so far the extent of the changes haven't yielded many points. I remain unconvinced about this squad and the amount of loanees but it's still early days let's see where we are at Christmas hopefully making progress...

I am still fully behind PH as we must so encourage all to do the same. Some of the insulting remarks above about PH beggar belief, and let down the club. That said, now I've seen a full game I do have a few thoughts and observations that give me some concern for the season ahead.

Against Norwich -

- First half really poor and hapless. We looked fully Div 1, rather headless, and the players didn't look like they believed they were good enough to play at that level. Could not pass it around or keep possession or string more than 3 passes together. Terrible.

- Edwards clearly a threat, but the way he kept running with it till he lost it rather than giving it was perplexing and suggests he has plenty to learn/improve. Still, great we have someone whol will run at people and take them on!

- Worried about Roberts and Graham being good enough. But let's give them a chance.

- The 2 new strikers - I don't get it. I don't really see the threat they pose or how they will be effective at all. Lots of money spent there so a lot riding on them and how we judge PH. Thankfully we have Walters who will help a lot.

- When Norwich had their spell 2nd half they were all over us, cut through our defence with embarrassing ease, had loads of time to pick passes and get shots in. They should have done more with them and we are lucky they didn't.

It looks like it will take a while for these players to step up and believe they can play at this level, so I can see the next couple of months being tough, but urge all to keep the faith and support the team!

1RWR the Waghorn deal was all about money mate the club simply cashing in on a good deal...I would have kept him as imo it's not a great idea to sell your better players hey ho

A lot of comments re selling Waghorn, if you have a player that is unhappy you will not get the best from him. He was offered much better terms by Derby for sure & wanted to go nearer to the NE. No brainer at 6 million or whatever. One of MM's better deals but who can forget the likes of Nouble, well his performances were forgettable.
Sir Bob struggled to begin with but turned ITFC into the best team in the league & one of the best in Europe. I am an optomist & hope PH does well. Nothing could be worse than watching a MM team.

PH says " Waghorn did not want to play for Ipswich Town" is that so, methinks that him and the rest who have left did not want to play for him.
