Edwards and Knudsen Could Win Caps
Tuesday, 16th Oct 2018 10:43

Gwion Edwards could win his first full Wales cap this evening when Wales take on the Republic of Ireland in the UEFA Nations League in Dublin (Sky Sports Main Event/Football from 7pm), while Jonas Knudsen will be looking to add to his international appearances when Denmark face Austria in a friendly.

Edwards, who has been handed the Welsh number 17 shirt, was a late call into the squad on Friday having been on standby and appears certain to be among the subs.

The 25-year-old, who has won caps at U19 and U21 levels, has previously received one senior call back in 2014 for the Euro 2016 qualifiers against Bosnia-Herzegovina and Cyprus when a Crawley Town player but didn’t feature in either game.

Wales are currently second in their Nations League group having beaten Ireland 4-1 in Cardiff in their opening match before losing 2-0 in Denmark. The Danes and Ireland drew 0-0 in Dublin on Saturday.

Reflecting on a potential return to the Wales squad prior to the international break, Edwards said: “I was on the bench twice for the European 2016 qualifiers and I was in the provisional squad for the last two games, but when it was narrowed down I wasn’t picked.

“Hopefully, one day I will get the chance. There’s been a good atmosphere around the squad for a few years now and they’ve done well.

“Ryan Giggs has come in and he’s a big name. I would love the chance to show everyone what I can do.”

Knudsen will be hoping to win his fifth full Denmark cap when they host Austria in a friendly in Herning this evening.

The 26-year-old has been an unused sub in the Danes’ recent fixtures having started their on-penalties World Cup round-of-16 defeat to Croatia in the summer.

I can see Edwards getting a run out, but Knudsen just appears to be squad ballast to me.
