Town Sign Dawkins on Short-Term Deal
Wednesday, 9th Jan 2019 16:23

Town have signed former Tottenham, Derby and San Jose Earthquakes attacking midfielder Simon Dawkins on a short-term deal until the end of the season with the club having an option for a further year.

Dawkins, who was 31 last month, has been training with the club for five weeks, as TWTD revealed at the end of last month, and impressed as the U23s defeated their Bristol City counterparts 4-2 on Monday, a result that keeps them on top of the Professional Development League Two South table.

“This is a massive club and I want to do everything I can to help get it back to where it should be,” he told iFollow Ipswich.

“I've enjoyed my time here so far and the lads have been brilliant. Everybody is very much together and it’s probably one of the only dressing rooms I’ve been in where that is the case.

"Everyone gets along and we definitely have the foundations to get out of this situation.

“And new additions can give a club that lift and experience that it needs. Hopefully that’s what we need to turn the good performances into results.

“This is an opportunity for me as well. I like the manager and the style of football here and I’m looking forward to it.

“I’ve had a good five weeks training and played a game for the U23s on Monday so I’m ready to go when the gaffer needs me.”

The 19-cap Jamaican international, who will wear the Town number 49 shirt, was born in Edgware and joined the Tottenham academy, going out on loan to Leyton Orient, the Earthquakes, Aston Villa — where Town boss Paul Lambert was in charge at the time — and Derby while on the books at White Hart Lane.

Dawkins failed to make the breakthrough with Spurs and was sold to Derby for £500,000 five years ago before moving on a permanent basis to San Jose in January 2016.

He was close to joining Minnesota United before leaving the States in February last year and after time on trial at League One sides Charlton and Luton in the summer he failed to land a full-time deal at either club.

Missing out on target Anthony Pilkington — the 30-year-old Cardiff winger opted instead for Wigan Athletic for family reasons — saw Lambert turn his attention to Dawkins, who will go straight into the squad for Saturday’s home clash with Rotherham.

Meanwhile, Blues centre-back Luke Woolfenden is back training with the Blues squad at Playford Road this week with manager Paul Lambert taking his first look at the 20-year-old.

Woolfenden is on loan at Swindon for the season, although the Blues are able to cut the stint short in January. However, Lambert has previously played down the likelihood of youngsters such as Woolfenden and Josh Emmanuel, who is at Shrewsbury, being in his plans for the second half of the season.

Elsewhere, ex-Blue Jay Emmanuel-Thomas has joined Thai club PTT Rayong having been released by QPR at the end of last season.

Where are the experienced players we were going to sign? Don't tell me they cost money. Would not surprise me if Evans makes a profit during this window.

Saxon blue sorry meant to mark up whilst we all know things are not good at present. The least we can do is get behind any new signings. & support Lambert for trying his best to sort out the mess he inherited. Mind you some people on this site would blame the club if it rained tomorro!

Glad to see you here. Hopefully you will be one of many who save us from relegation. Hit the ground running and good luck. If you are reading this, don't bother with those that are knocking you before you have kicked a ball in anger.

Sorry far from impressed with this 'kind' of signing! Smacks of a 'McCarthy signing' ( not blaming McCarthy) .....desperate, a 'journey man' who's failed and fallen through many levels of football! Last throw of the dice for both parties concerned!

Saxon, my point is that the records of these two players is poor. The idea that it is ok to sign people who might not be good enough because they are cheap is ridiculous and a waste of effort, we need to see signings that have the qualities to make a difference and have a history of achievement. Funnily enough im not suggesting we try for Manchester City style imports, all i ask and im sure PL is asking for is some investment in quality that might just save us. However thats just me being deluded because everyone knows the owner isnt into that philosophy. Our club has become the home for cast offs, triers and unknowns, that come cheap. That very sadly is where we are and we all know where it is taking us.

Chill out everyone.
Deep down we all know the owner/management team are planning for next year, no option other than to sign short term loans.
Let's hope the new boys at least help Ipswich make a fight of it and give us something to cheer about for the remainder of the season.
Hopefully a few goals and a few wins.

@northstand, I'm glad you've got a good idea what the owner is planning!

....... but who can we expect to get people .... ???

Why are we attractive to the players that PL would want .... ??? - simply we are NOT - whatever anyone thinks.

It has to be a 'do our best for the rest of the season' - and plan, rebuild for next season, if we don't do that the same people will be complaining that we didn't, but should have done so.
Miracles seldom happen, but that is what some are expecting still.

Anyone expecting more is having a DREAM. Accept the inevitable.

....... just a timely reminder to some:-

NO EVANS - NO CLUB .............. CURRENTLY, and possibly foreseeably. However unfortunate that may be.

A lot of positive & negative comments! For those of you who have seen him, fair play, he may not be good enough, but we can't make early judgements before he has even played! He's only been training for 5 weeks! PL knows we need all the help we can get and wouldn't be making unnecessary signings. good luck lad! Shame that ME isn't going to spend big during this transfer window! Also a shame we didn't get Pilkington, felt like he could have been dangerous.... to the opponents that Is....

Why are most writing off this transfer window already??!! There's still time to pull off a decent couple of deals. Who knows, just maybe we already have! MM had a huge talent for regenerating careers and I think PL is out of the same mould in that respect.

Woolfenden being back training at town this week, does this mean that Lambert is considering recalling him?? Or is this just a usual thing for players out on loan to come back and train at their parent club

Saxon, apologies I've down marked you. Didn't mean to do that.

I'll back Lambert all the way but does seem if Pilkington had signed Dawkins wouldn't have, He has been here 4 weeks and if he was ripping it up he could have signed and played even before the window opened as a free agent.

Lets hope he has something to prove and not just coming for a wage.

FFS , Why are we leaving it up to Paul Lambert to find players when we have so many scouts and top managers albeit unemployed on here who know better, they all know of loads of top players that can do the business for us, just a phone call away , ......I dont believe it.However ,welcome Simon, i have to confess i dont know anything about you but unlike some ,am happy to see you get a chance to prove your worth .

Clearly some secret scum fans on here. Welcome Simon. All the best. We're in a bad place at the moment, but I love my club and will welcome anyone willing to come in and try to help.

Welcome Simon, now rip it up on the pitch.
I was at the U23 game on Monday and he had a good game, as did Morris, who was even more impressive while chipping in with two goals. McKendry for me, was the stand out performer, really tenacious in midfield.

Hope we get a few more in quick. Can't seem to see many leaving yet. We have too many that can't do it match days. Sod the apparent good atmosphere in squad when performances have been so poo
