Collins and Chalobah Doubts for West Brom Trip
Thursday, 7th Mar 2019 14:55

Town boss Paul Lambert says James Collins and Trevoh Chalobah are doubts ahead of Saturday’s game at West Brom with the injuries they suffered during the first half of last weekend’s 2-1 defeat to Reading. Better news is that Jonas Knudsen is back from his one-match ban, while Ellis Harrison is closing in on a return after his hamstring injury.

“He’s a doubt, obviously, we’ll see how he is tomorrow,” Lambert said when asked about Collins, who picked up a calf problem before being replaced five minutes before the break against the Royals.

“It’s frustrating. It’s frustrating for the lad himself. I think that’s the big thing as a footballer when you keep getting little knocks and you can’t get over them, it becomes frustrating.”

Might the ex-West Ham man also be a doubt for Tuesday’s game at Bristol City? “I don’t know, we’ll have to wait and see. We’re just monitoring him over the next few days.”

If Lambert sticks with the back three he has used in recent games then Knudsen could come straight back into the team having impressed his manager at the heart of the defence.

“He did well at it,” Lambert added. “I know there was obviously the sending off [at Wigan] but I think the times he’s been there, he’s given us a balance with his left foot. He’s back in contention, so we’ll see. We’ve got two games in a few days, so we’ll see.”

Lambert says the illness bug which has hit the squad over the last few weeks has now gone but Trevoh Chalobah remains a doubt with the thigh problem he suffered at the weekend

“Trevoh, we’ll see how he is, he got a strain last weekend and I had to take him off, so we’ll see how he feels. Whether this one is too early for him or the Bristol City game, I’ll have to look at that.”

Regarding Harrison, who has been sidelined with a hamstring injury, he said: “He’s doing OK, he feels better today so we’ll see how he is. He’s in a better place than he was a week or so ago.”

Loanee left-back Callum Elder is making progress also having been out for a number of games.

“He did it a few weeks ago, it’s kind of around his hip area,” Lambert explained. “I think it was a challenge and it just knocked him back a little bit. He’s doing OK Callum, he’s doing alright. He’s not too far away but this one’s too early.”

The Town boss says striker Will Keane is also making progress with his hamstring injury although is a few weeks away from a return yet.

“He’s doing alright, he’s doing better. The frustrating thing for us is that he’s never really done a muscle injury, this is his first one.

“I go back to it, when you bring in loans you’re bringing in players who haven’t played many games.

“I think Will played five games from August to December, that’s an incredibly low amount of games, so you always run that risk with it.

“I think he’s just frustrated because he’s never really had a muscle injury, he’s had knee injuries, but he’s never really had a muscle injury so he can’t really compare it with anything.

“But he’s doing alright, again the international break will help him recover and he can’t play against Hull City anyway, so they’re three weeks he’s going to miss, which might help us.”

The Blues boss says he may have to rotate his squad during the upcoming three games in eight days.

“I think there’s a lot of lads have played a lot of games and a lot of lads who have played fewer games, so we have to look at that and I think that’s important for the club going forward,” he said.

“Too many lads have played a helluva lot of games and one or two lads have hardly played, so it’s a balancing act. But with two games in a matter of a few days, I’ll look at that.”

Lambert says winger Gwion Edwards could be in line for a start having made an impact from the bench in the last couple of weeks.

“He’s done great, I thought he did really well last week and I thought he did really well at Wigan when he came on, so he’ll be in my thinking,” he continued. “He’s playing well, I think he’s playing well.”

Meanwhile, midfielder Tristan Nydam is also currently sidelined with a back problem having returned from his loan at St Johnstone in January.

We may as well release Collins tbh he's never going to be fit is he!
Excellent player, just set for retirement I fear .

It's obvious James Collins hasn't been fit since he's been at the club complete waste of time and money he could barely run on Saturday and got beaten several times after committing himself we need to start thinking about next season. Just like to say Mat Pennington has been an excellent player and professional and always given his best easily our player of the year wish him well in the future.

Neither player will be here next season so no great loss, play our own players

Admittedly he's not very good but who would you have in to replace Quaner, given who's injured?

Why isn't Jackson getting a look in?

He is pacey, has eye for goal & a great work rate

Personally, think he would have been excellent played alongside Keane & complement each other nicely

All loan players, and has-beens like Chambers, Skuse and Knudsen, should be sent on gardening leave with immediate effect : these 11 games should be the start of pre-season 19-20, with only players likely to be here next year involved.

Will Collins now be ripping his contract up I wonder?

Quaner is still coming up to full fitness, and since keane's injury has tried his best on his own up front I feel sorry for him he is in a no win situation!!!! at least he gives his all unlike one or two!!!!

Our u23 team is top of their league so blood a few of them. The only way they can get better is to play at a higher level. We are relegated, no question in my mind, so what's to lose. Throw them in the deep end like the club used to. Not all at once of course but lets see which ones look likely to step up. In the last few season we've seen so many promising youngsters and just not used them.

No apologies for saying this folks - if you know Football, and how it should be played - you will know that Quaner had a very good game against Reading.
Anyone who doesn't think so, I suggest learns a bit about the game.

Whatever Lambert does will be wrong with some, if he now aborts all hope and the possibility of avoiding relegation - puts all the youngsters in, as you've asked for, loses every game between now and the end of the season, the same people will be saying he was wrong for giving up too soon with several matches left.

Heads he can't win, Tails he loses - whatever he does.

We, as a Club owe it to the integrity of this Club to compete in every game, and field the strongest team available for the rest of the season - at the Managers discretion.

Plenty of time to evaluate how many of the fringe players will be up to it next season - don't bank on miracles, League 1 will be HARD, and a huge step up for some players from the Under 23's.

........ talking of releasing players now that are signed for the rest of this season, is pointless - unless by mutual consent we would have to pay them anyway, for the rest of the contract.

Collins just had to be worth a gamble - it hasn't paid dividends, but had it done so, we would all have been singing from the rooftops - with more points on the board, more than likely.

He's missed far too many games to have been of use - unfortunately.

blueboy1981 according to you I don't know anything about football so won't comment, as I think Quaner is unfit, leaden footed with a poor touch, but then as you said, what do I know!!

We need to stop signing so many injury prone players. Collins is a complete waste of time, whilst Keane has a terrible injury record.

The last 2 games Knudsen played in were a disaster, why should he get back in the team? He wants away and has for some time. Not one that should play in my opinion.

God I hope Trevoh is fit otherwise we will be treated to the ineffective premiership class no/8 which will be good night Vienna!!

Let's not forget here Collins was a major contributor in his first game in picking up 3 extremely rare points, a 1/3 of our wins this season. Trev will be a loss, like the fella and he's prepared to take the game to the opposition.
Daleyitfc- agree, maybe they should send them out at half time with some pitch forks to tend the turf!!

The must win games have now gone.
As a town fan of 55 years I believe the youth can get us promoted , but not if Lambert wants to keep proper blokes Chambers & Skuses

Algavfan: Regarding Quaner how can he or any other loanees we brought in be fit they have not played all season but at least they are giving 100% while limited by lack of fitness Keanes lack of fitness being the cause of his injury which is a shame but that is football and the biggest shame is the mess our great club is in.

Jonas is or was my favourite proper bloke. I've always thought he was the better player as well.
Yes I know, that makes the others very very poor then.
But considering he wanted out the moment the darkest lord said he wanted out, and has wanted out every day since.
He should never play for the club again.
It's certainly not our problem that know one wanted to pay a fiver for him, they would only take him if he was a freebie.
