Norwood: Wrestling Night a Big Win
Friday, 20th Sep 2019 14:13

James Norwood hailed his wrestling debut “a massive win” having raised plenty of money for Cancer Research.

Norwood was a guest enforcer at Norwood Mania, a charity event staged in Harwich on Wednesday night.

“It was brilliant, it was a really good event, it raised what's believed to have been a four-figure sum for Cancer Research,” Norwood said. “For me it was a massive win. It was a successful night.”

He says he’d be up for doing it again but not for a while: “Absolutely, yes, come the end of the season, all being well, promotion.”

Reflecting further he added: “I’d love to get back in the ring but I don’t think I’ll do it until I retire.”

He says his involvement on Wednesday was reduced due to the groin injury he suffered at Stadium MK on Tuesday.

“I spoke to the guy [running the wrestling event] and told him I was injured so it just got changed so I just got in the ring and did one throw,” he explained.

“For me it was OK, it was for charity so I felt like I needed to do something. It changed from a full event to just one throw.

“There was more planned, but being a charity event people wanted to see a bit of wrestling and I was happy to oblige, but with the injury I just said, ‘Listen, I can’t do anything, I’ll just do a throw and count someone out’.”

He says none of the Town squad made the trip to North Essex to catch him grappling - “No, it’s not their sort of thing” - but plenty of supporters were present.

“There were quite a lot of fans,” he said. “Hopefully there’s a little bit of a crossover between the wrestling fans and the Ipswich fans.

“It seems like the Ipswich fans really enjoyed it, they were given some memorabilia and things like that and couple of the wrestling fans might turn up and come and watch Ipswich. Hopefully there’s a decent crossover and we’ve made some new fans and so have they.”

The wrestling night came about as a result of his themed goal celebration GIFs. Asked if he’s got any more lined up, he was remaining tight-lipped: “I might have one. I don’t know. You’ll find out, it's close to me heart.”
