Dozzell and Downes Win Caps as England U20s Thrash Portugal
Thursday, 14th Nov 2019 17:19

Andre Dozzell and Flynn Downes both started as England’s U20s thrashed Portugal 4-0 away in the U20 Elite League this afternoon.

Stoke’s Tyrese Campbell scored twice and Manchester City’s Ian Carlo Poveda made it 3-0 at half-time before Arsenal’s Emile Smith-Rowe completed the scoring in the second half.

Downes, 20, was winning his fifth U20s cap, while Dozzell, also 20, who was subbed in the 65th minute, was picking up his eighth.

The U20s are in action again on Tuesday when they face Iceland's U21s at Wycombe Wanderers’ Adams Park.

Dozzell must be one of the few players to play better for his country than his club!!

Well done to both lads. Great for both individuals and the Club. Will certainly be a tragedy if we allow Andre's undoubted abilities to somehow wither on the vine. Am sure PL and the coaching team will strive to play him in a position that best suits him, and delivers max impact for the team.

Sometimes I wonder if Dozzell would benefit from a loan out to somewhere in Germany or Holland. I don't think we can see the best of him in the hurly burly of League one or Championship. His passing every now and then is out of this world but it doesn't suit this level.

Don't think their quite in the great player category yet. As for Dozzell playing better for his country than his club i wouldn't know ive never seen him play for England i think he was subbed today anyway. A couple of good passes in a game just isn't good enough must do a lot more to get a regular game at first team level.

Linkboy. You miss the point.
There both great players for there age group.
As you have to be to get in any England squad, let alone start in an 11.

The FA and the England coaching system see both Dozzell and Downes as in the top 25 in there age group in the whole country. Unlike Linkboy, who hasn't seen Dozzel play in a 3 lions shirt.
You cant really compare such talent to a midfielder at Fleetwood or Southend....or in fact any in L1.
