Lambert: We Targeted Wickham
Lambert: We Targeted Wickham
Tuesday, 11th Feb 2020 23:24

Blues boss Paul Lambert has revealed he made a loan approach for ex-Town striker Connor Wickham in January but with the 26-year-old Crystal Palace frontman well beyond the club financially.

Asked whether he had any regrets about not signing a striker in the January window, Lambert said: “We couldn’t get one. We tried for a lot of guys. I enquired about the lad Connor Wickham, who was here. Dear oh dear, we couldn’t get anyone in.

“The ones I did go for, to help the guys, incredible, we don’t have the money to go and do it.

“Ideally would we have got people in to help? Aye, we would have but we couldn’t get anybody in that was in our bracket.”

Quizzed further on the approach for Wickham, Lambert added: “I enquired about him, [general manager of football operations] Lee [O'Neill] spoke to the agent, but the money was… wow!

“It wasn’t just him I looked at, there were a few guys a looked at but the level was incredibly high.

“It’s not realistic, we just felt we need a little bit of help in certain areas to try and get us through it but it just never materialised.”

However, he says he is confident that the strikers he has at the club are capable of scoring the goals required to climb back up the table and be in the running come May.

“They’ve done it before, that’s why I know it’s in them," he said. "We have to take chances when we’re on top.”

Wickham eventually joined Championship Sheffield Wednesday on loan on deadline day.

We do have the money if Marcus is willing to take a punt. It was, and still is, obvious that what we need is someone with the right build to cause trouble in the opponents' penalty area at corners and with crosses. We're just not cutting it up front. OK, it might not have worked, and Marcus might have lost more money - but IMHO it was worth a try.

Always rated Connor Wickham when he was here.....Not much finesse , but made a nuisance of himself all game....bullying defenders , running down keepers etc.....How much did we sell him for..peanuts.....now we cannot afford him..........Ridiculous....COYB....ITID

Keep up the good work Chambo. Your the one who said it would be a disaster not to go up... no worries you can give It a bash again next year.

Pennblue is totally correct when he says let's not be too quick blame the manager this time around.

Too many people are far too quick to heap the majority of the blame for our current malaise on a manager who has his staffing options cut to the bone by an owner with no ambition, despite what he says on his rare forays in front of a video camera.

Sure, Evans can wax lyrical and hide behind the FFP and that same old boring story about running the club on a stable financial footing year after year after year, ad infinitum. The reality of this business is that, if you don't make a solid investment, you get nowhere for a couple of seasons before slipping into reverse gear and disappearing down the leagues. That scenario became all too apparent last season.

One of the major problems for the last several years seems to be Evans' willingness to sell our capable playing staff and our upcoming, hungry young talent for a small handful of magic beans, which he then (on the odd occasion) plants in the poisoned soil of over-the-hill journeymen and lower league no-hopers. Just look at the very capable players who've left the club for pocket money since Evans took charge and marvel at the amounts they've then been sold on for after one or two more seasons... that doesn't look or smell like good business to me. Conversely, look at what has been drafted in on a shoestring as replacements and how successful that policy has proven to be. Disastrous!

The trotting out of phrases like "stable financial footing" and "financial fair play", among others of the same ilk, is always used as a justification for not investing in talent which could get us flying up the league table. The threat of financial instability is used as a cudgel to beat down the support who are frustrated at watching the tasteless fayre being served up by the team on a weekly basis.

"Do you want this club to go out of business by spending money on players?" Obviously not! No-one who supports this club wants that!! That threat is a well used tool to quieten the unrest in the ranks at the complete dearth of desire shown by Evans. If I hear that poor excuse, that shonky snake oil salesman's technique one more time by the ownership or his cronies, I think I'll scream.

Other clubs seem to show much more determination to better their lot each transfer window by speculating funds on players who can help them push on in the league, where we languish in the knowledge that our owner would rather sell to balance his own pot. Furthermore, many of those clubs are poorer than we are. Do they operate without fear of losing their league status? Are they ALL on the brink of going out of business? How do they do it???

I'm afraid it doesn't really matter who sits as the manager of this club, their hands are tied when it comes to how the club operates on the pitch due to a complete lack of aspiration from the ownership

You can say what you like, however, it still remains undeniable that Evans is the be all and end all when it comes to the ruination of this once great club.

Rant over... for now.

12 months ago near to the day. We renewed the contracts of Chambo and sideways.
Why the hell was this done....the club will never move on.
To think it's the same set up next year. It's L1 at best for years to come.

One thing we should all question is our coaches, when TC was here we could turn a basic striker into something good so why are we failing to get our strikers and midfielders scoring? Lets face it some many misses and poor shots it's one of the reasons we are drawing 0-0 against teams that we should be well and truly beating. I'd go and find a good top rated coach who can turn this around instead of trying to get loans in that are over paid and don't wear the badge. Something is a miss at the club and has to be PL and the coaching staff.

Just get this fool of a so called owner out of this club. He has ruined a giant of a club putting us to shame & quite frankly enough is enough now. Why couldn't he sign Wickham? How hasn't that bloke got the money to bring in an old fan's favourite at the club!! Bloody pathetic!!

He hasn't scouted the January transfer market for players without a club either, 3 names on there which could do a job for us.

Ben Marshall a good replacement for the injured KVY.
Jordan Mutch, only a maybe but think we have more than enough midfielders.
Bradley Wright Philips, he's 34 now but surely he can offer something in this league? Not Connor Wickham material but cheaper options for mr tight arse.
Can't blame Lambert he is only fielding what he thinks is his best 11.

Two questions:
How come ITFC were surprised by the wages CW commands?
How did ITFC reach the conclusion that CW would consider dropping to League One when a host of top end Championship clubs were after him?
The as yet inadequately reported story that warrants some investigative journalism is how a club with the wealthiest owner outside of the PL & an average home attendance of approaching 20k ends up 7th in League one & financially outmuscled. It's an especially confusing situation since our net transfer outlay is non-existent & our illustrious owner apparently makes huge investments.

Too much of a risk with his injury problems surely we've learned our lesson. It's a sad state of affairs but it looks like we've budgeted to stay in this league. Ive supported this club for over 55 years and seen it get more rotten every season .I think myself lucky to have seen the good times but i wont be one of the ten thousand next season.

I watched that crap last night and the commentator stated that if we can't beat last night's Wimbledon team we may as well give up!!!! I must admit I agree with him totally. My once great club will be permanently in league 1or2 .Ive supported the town since 1961 when I was 8 and I think it's now turning a full cycle and we're going once again going to be a non-league side once again as I shuffle off this mortal coil . anyway I hope that doesn't happen and some Arab sheik comes along to buy this great club .

I do not know what Mega Bucks Palace wanted for him ?? but it might have been worth the Punt to get some Goals for us, (as our Strikers cannot hit a barn door at the moment) so just think EVANS if we stay in this League for another season the money you will lose will be far greater than Palaces Fee, also the Probable loss of season tickets holders for next season !!

Yeh and i targeted a night between the sheets with numerous fantasy figures!! for gods sake P.L you are saying whatever to cover and hide from your ridiculous team selections in the last 4 games when before we were at least pushing forwards to get a win you have turned into a fear of losing negative manager who is desperate.

Completely unrealistic target. No chance of Marcus doing these type of deals. Little chance of him doing any sort of deal unless it's cheap and short term.

Did you think to try and get Tyler Walker, 14 goals in this league this season and his loan at Lincoln ended in January ?

rnblue63 added 21:19 - Feb 12
No ambition, no goals, no results. All negative. OK so Wickham was going to be on premiership wages, but only for 18 games or so, surely Evans could push the boat out for that limited period. Its not as though we were going to sign him on a permanent long term contract.

we have the easiest run home in fixtures of any top 6 team, but can we do it ?
9pts in the next 3 games should be easy if we are half decent...

Why target Wickham when you had same chance of getting Mo Salah?
